Student parents are a demographic that is not often discussed in higher education and continue to face barriers while completing school. The research provides data on what student parents face, how they can overcome those barriers, and ideas for further research.

Yes, Teina! Doing this research is so much more personal since you and I know exactly what barriers we face while obtaining a higher education. You brought up a great point that many don't think about! Just because a parent is taking classes remotely, that parent still needs help with their younger children so they can focus on their studies. Well done!

Teina - I think your personal experience with this issue provided a much deeper understanding of the reason change is needed. You did an excellent job of highlighting the unique challenges and barriers student parents face and provided valuable insights on how to support them better. Your research is vital for creating a more inclusive educational environment. Well done!

It's difficult to be a college student in itself but to add being a parent as well is even more difficult. Thanks for bringing awareness about this topic. College's support is the key for parents students to succeed in their goals.

Hi Teina, I like that you picked a research project you yourself could relate to. I think often times parents feel as if they cannot further their education, but if they got the support they need through the practices you mentioned I’m sure they would be far more likely to.

Teina, thank you for sharing this information. I’m happy to know that there is now a much needed focus on student parents and the need for childcare, among other things, that will assist parenting students in their educational journey.

Teina, I love how personally inspired your study is. From your identity as a student parent to working to support student parents, I understand the drive to investigate this issue. I am also a student parent, and I have to work full time to help support my family which definitely creates barriers for me as a graduate student.

Being a student is tough on its own, you throw in being a parent and that brings forth a lot of additional challenges. There are jobs that offer daycare services or partnerships with reduced-fee childcare opportunities. It would be great if that were an option at Universities in the states. It would certainly encourage people to come back to school that otherwise wouldn't be able to attend due to childcare concerns. Awesome study!

Yeah, I noticed working at a community college that they offered more resources for student parents than universities. I'm not sure if it's a funding issue, but it would be nice to see that across the board, especially since childcare is so expensive.

Teina, This topic I'm pretty sure is personal to many of us in this class. Many of us, like myself being a single mom, trying to balance everything like my personal life, my kids life, and my school work, its a lot to handle. This was a great topic to discuss, and the feedback you received from your participants helped proved that student parents need that extra help in order to get an education as well. Yes, we had children young, but that should not stop us from getting a degree.

You are right, I can relate so much to your comment and I only have one child. I don't know how others can juggle multiple children while working full time, going to school, and everything else.

I found it interesting to see the process of how you collected data and the themes found between the students. It definitely puts perspective on how important it is to have all the support you can get in such a hard time of your life.

I agree that higher education does not consider student parents who are already going through a hard time as parents and are now parents in college, and how much harder that can be but with the right resources, it can ease the hardship. Thank you!

What other barriers are student parents facing? And what are other resources available to them besides childcare? Possibly mental health resources?
@teinagamez6886
@teinagamez6886 Месяц назад
As rent in our area is so expensive, student parents are experiencing housing insecurity, and we offer emergency funding or utility assistance, as well as LYft codes and textbook funding and other resources. We realize community colleges have more resources than universities, and mental health is a crucial issue today, so we offer mental health counseling on campus.
