After visiting Kensington Market and the adjacent Chinatown, I waited only minutes for a streetcar. Ohhh, how I love Toronto's streetcars. Just don't call me "Blanche."

Captivating footage of a captivating night. Street cars and street lights, a beautiful combo 😊❤️

Ooohhh, I couldn't agree more.🌃 I resisted pairing these scenes with music to preserve the atmospherics. Topmost in my mind was for the ambience of the streetcar network -- with its cobwebby catenary wires -- and of nighttime in The Six, to be palpable. Your comment proves that I made a prudent decision. Thank you.😊 So mesmerized was I by the fast trams and flashing lights that I hopped aboard the wrong streetcar. A kind gentleman alerted the driver that I needed to exit at the next stop and take a different streetcar to the subway station at Dundas Street. It was pitch black outside, just past the Distillery district. Gothic. The congenial stranger not only waited with me (for more than 20 minutes) for the correct streetcar, but also went completely out of his way to ride with me to Dundas *and* saw to it that I exited the subway car at the accurate station in the Village. Some women poo-poo gallantry; I don't. That night, the helpful stranger was my knight. Of all the characters in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire to be associated with that frightful night, it had to be Blanche DuBois -- but for a virtuous reason. Remember when Blanche delivers her final line of the film: "I've always depended on the kindness of strangers"? Vivien Leigh portrayed that role down to its tragic essence. I applaud playwright Williams and director Elia Kazan for creating compassion in viewers for Blanche in the brutal scene depicting her brother-in-law trapping her with intent to inflict further emotional harm and to violate her while his wife is in labor at the hospital; and during the very awkward domestic scenes that follow, especially after Stella and baby are brought home. After all, Williams' play debuted in the late 1940s; Kazan's film adaptation, 1951. That was a conservative era in America. I've viewed and wept during the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire enough times over the years to appreciate that Leigh nailed her performance as a faded Southern belle with a penchant for dimmed lighting and paper lanterns -- all the while feeling haunted by the pariah label back in her town, where the denizens can't forgive her for cuckolding her late husband. Blanche ends up crumbling on the inside like her and sister Stella's family mansion in Mississippi -- Belle Rêve (but pronounced "reave" like "grieve") -- has deteriorated from its exterior on down to its bill of sale. By the way, as much as I adore Marlon Brando the actor, I loathe him as the brute, Stanley Kowalski. The cruel fact that he rapes Blanche and has her committed at story's end is doubly tragic. On a lighter note, which Toronto streetcar did I desire? The "505."🚊 Merci beaucoup.😊❤️

@@gabrielapaulinho1luv That's really nice that a kind-hearted stranger went out of his way to help you like that. Selfless individuals like that are a dying breed in these mostly self centered times thanks to social media and other influences making the new generation believe that oneself is more important than anyone else, including family. I'll never understand why gallantry is frowned upon. I wish someone would have been kind enough to have helped me out back in 2019 when I was ganged up on by two muggers in the park in broad daylight. People could see I was in trouble, one passer-by even looked at me right in the eyes but just walked on their way, leaving me to get assaulted. I managed to get away in the end, with a concussion that lasted over a week. Considering knife crimes are a big problem in the UK, I should be thankful that I only sustained two punches to the head and stomach by the two thugs. I've yet to see A Streetcar Named Desire but I have seen clips and it looks like a compelling work. I definitely want to see it one of the days 😊

@@P.Brocklehurst First, I am disheartened that you were assaulted in that park. I am aware of the huge problem of stabbings in the UK. I am relieved that you escaped with your life but how awful that you were seriously injured -- my God, horrible punches and a concussion that lasted more than a week. Two muggers -- they were punks and criminals. You have my empathy. Second, yeah, gallantry is a virtue, and selfishness and egocentrism are sins that should cause their perpetrators to be banished to a punishing galaxy. 😊❤

@@gabrielapaulinho1luvYou're very kind 😊 and yeah, people like them. The muggers and the pedestrians who did nothing to help, I can't help wondering how they sleep at night. And so true, people need to be united, not divided. Love, not hate, is the answer ❤️
