Brando's acting is still great here 70 years later. You'd have thought it'd be a bit dated by now but honestly brilliant even now.

It's very interesting because nowadays Brando's methods are the standard and Leigh and Hunter would be considered "over-the-top".
@angienoexiste
@angienoexiste 9 месяцев назад
overall yes, but for this specific play Leigh´s is perfect. Blanche wouldn´t fit with the method acting, she´s a character that´s ment to be over the top, theatrical, somebody who takes a lot of space with her personality. And she´s ment to contrast with Stanley, who was portrayed perfectly by Brando as well with the grunts and mumbling. Hunter´s acting doesn´t come off as over the top for me, she´s not as exagerated as Brando but for Stella it works.

@@angienoexiste Vivien Leigh was always stagy in her films including as 'Scarlett O'Hara' in _Gone with the Wind._ Her passion was the theater, and it showed. She only made 5 films between _Wind_ (1939) and _Streetcar_ (1951) and only 3 more afterward in the span of 14 years. But her stage credits in New York and London were plentiful.

The last time I saw this movie was like 9th grade when they made us watch it for some reason, I was immediately struck by brando because he seemed like a modern actor transplanted into the early 50’s. Now after watching this scene I’m wondering if James Gandolfini was inspired by this performance when he played tony soprano

@TylerD288
@TylerD288 Месяц назад
Belts are superior.
@martinmills135
@martinmills135 16 дней назад
Belts aren't necessarily better. If you'd ever worn braces (suspenders), you'd understand how comfortable they are-they're much less restrictive. One reason why men don't wear them much nowadays, I think, is because they're traditionally considered underwear and aren't meant to be visible. This can make even your nice t-shirts look like underwear too. Using the restroom is laborious if you're wearing a pullover, waistcoat (vest), or jacket over them.
