Next to Death of a Salesman, this is one of the most profound screenplays of the 20th century. I'm right there with her.

I may be missing the point here, and I know the main tragedy is that she's going to an asylum for little or no reason other than a nervous breakdown, but I sometimes think that the doctor was nicer to her than every other character in the play/movie. I'm just hoping that's how they'll treat her in the asylum, with gentleness and politeness.

Blance was already emotionally unstable, but her brother in law raped her and catapulted her breakdown.

I know that, I was sort of thinking about what Homer Simpsons said about the play in "A streetcar Named Marge". I know it's a really trivial source, but I've always like how he got that Blanch just really needed somebody to be nice to her and to treat her with respect - as she's already emotionally unstable that proves the point even more. I just meant that the doctor was actually respectful to her and I liked it.

+agenttheater5 No, I don't think you've missed the point at all. I think it's far sadder that the only person who's ever showed her genuine, unconditional kindness was a stranger--the doctor of an asylum nonetheless.

Six years late, but I feel compelled to respond. I absolutely agree (with this and your Simpsons comment, haha). Given what poor Blanche has been through, I always hoped that the doctor was sincerely kind and not simply acting that way in order to get Blanche to go without a struggle. Mental institutions in those days weren’t great, to say the least. But there actually were a small number that treated patients well, even if the right meds and therapy weren’t yet available. Considering how bleak this play is, I like to think that Blanche finally caught a break and was taken to one of those rare, decent institutions.

What a line! The movie always seemed a bit too melodramatic and the acting over the top but this moment breaks my heart. My father used to repeat this line all the time. I think we all depend on the kindness of strangers. And when that fails we sponge off relatives.
