In this video I make a study of Titian's Portrait of Ranuccio Farnese from the National Gallery of Art U.S.A. using an indirect painting method. The painting took about two weeks to complete including the underpainting. Reproductions I referenced are from Peter Humfrey's book 'Titian' and the NGA website. Material used: Oil colors(lead white, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, burnt umber, ultramarine blue, ivory black), nylon and bristle brushes, dammar glazing medium, Belgian linen, transfer paper.

Outstanding. I'm so grateful to see this from start to finish. I've heard the process explained before, but never saw it step by step like this.

To me, the main thing this type of video demonstrates is how great the Masters were, in that no one even begins to approach the beauty and complexities of the originals.

Wow. Just... wow! I’ve always wondered how old masters made those stunningly realistic artworks and you made me realize that it required a lot patience and hardwork... Thanks!

Magistrale leçon de peinture ! Bravo !

According to Tome Keating (the forger), Titian did around 30 passes of glazing and achieved the midtones by scumbling the surface of the painting with white and then taking it off with a sponge. However, I believe that your grisaille work is FANTASTIC, definitely much cleaner and the end result is perfect!!! Thank you for sharing!!!!!!!

@@martmarriner6793 Its not the first time that I've heard that Titian used a high number of glazes to build up his colours. I'll leave it to you to work out how many you have on your arse.

Your videos really motivate and support me to have energy, to overcome something that seems to take too much effort and also worthy of gifted geniuses. You do it and it even seems easy. By watching your work, I learn the technique so that later I can reproduce it. It also allows me to meditate, admire the old masters and you too with your mastery. Muchas gracias!

Titian would have done multiple unifying glazing layers (transparent cold over warm), and then scumble (warm opaque). Always remembering the fat over lean rule to minimize cracking over time.

Quick question, you started glazing with yellow ochre which is not a transparent color. Why didn’t you use a transparent yellow? Is it because can thin it out so much with your medium or because it’s closer to a color used by Titian?
@olddirtymasters
@olddirtymasters 3 месяца назад
I probably was just trying to keep things simple by using fewer colors honestly. Didn’t occur to me to use another yellow. Would be fun to try a historical palette one day.Thanks for your comments:)

You forgot the underpainting that goes on over the deadlayer , and then the glazes go on top of that. Also if you glaze the background it's better to start with lighter color because you can always darken slightly with the next glazes over them , but if you go dark with a glaze especially with that fast drying med you're using , you will lose the effect of transparency. That said, your drafting skills are good.

Which is the most difficult part in grisaille?
@olddirtymasters
@olddirtymasters 4 года назад
In theory I think the grisaille should be lighter in value than I made it here. Getting the likeness is also always difficult for me. Thanks!
