Wonderful painting of Lady Agnew- an excellent job. What I have observed from this study is that there is multiple layers . For example on the light side you added it’s reds on cheek area and on second layer yellow hue. Interesting and I learned from this. Thank you for this . 😊

An admirable copy of Sargent's Lady Agnew, although I've always felt that the brushwork of the patterning of fashions, dresses, ornamentation and background in general was so integral to his painting and for me some of the most pleasing aspects of his work.

I doubt that. Probably a liquin or any other alkyd type resin. Don’t paint over established layers with mineral spirits. You’ll destroy the delicate paint film.

I think you got a good likeness of the printed source. This doesn’t show how Sargent had to translate nature’s range of light/shadow into the materials that he used -pigments range of values/colors on canvas. This exercise is good for training the artists eyes for shapes, colors, and values within a limited range. But please put the disclaimer for students not to expect to match nature’s range when they actually attempt a portrait from life. You must learn to translate and subordinate nature’s range… and that is what Sargent was a master of doing!

I like what you say about shapes but I don't think a pencil and eraser are the correct tools to demonstrate the idea. Newsprint and soft vine charcoal is a better way to learn about shapes.

Why copy it at all? Do your own. Even if it were possible to paint like Sargent, achieving this would only make you his minor. Most artists give up copying as early as they can so they can begin to paint like themselves, which is the only skill worth the trouble it takes to get. Sargent is long dead. Let him be.
