Sol : is pretty chill, puts minimum effort into everything he does, does not give a fuck Ragna : is an aggressive straight man who follows common sense, tries to not give a fuck but the world doesn't let him do that
Honestly the sadder bit is when you compare their enemies: Ragna had to deal with the incredibly manipulative and ever-conniving soul of a god who literally refused to die unless everything else died before it. And Sol had to deal with his bro from a time before committing war crimes so the world didn't end. Like, even if Sol didn't quite understand it, Asuka did always have his back in his own tricky little ways. Meanwhile Terumi used Ragna at every single step in the story so that he would be theoretically invincible. And as an player of both games, I wouldn't compare even their playstyles. That said....the fact that I do play Ky and Jin must mean something.
You know, I think it's pretty funny that Ragna's whole story is that you should learn to know people on a deeper level and not let first impressions scare you away from connecting with them, and then people proceed to use their first impression. Not bashing on those people by the way, just noticing the irony in that.
Sol and Ragna really are two different characters with different messages behind them. In the end, one is always compared to the other because of the similarity of Design and why Blazblue was practically Arcsystem's answer to losing the copyright to Guilty Gear for a period... even its creators are different: Mori has a perspective totally different from Daisuke's. Both Guilty Gear and Blazblue are different stories with their own peculiarities, despite having a similarity or another.
Sol's story is about pursuing and striving towards your happiness in spite of everything Ragna's story is about learning to do good things and trying to make the world a better place even if you've never thanked for your efforts, even if the world labels you as a villain Sol strived towards happiness Ragna strived towards truth
Ragna from Calamity Trigger and Dante from DMC 3 have pretty similar personality too, Dante justs tries to masks it while Ragna doesn't. You watch the wacky pizza man interact with his brother where the mask drops a bit, and it's really not too far off. Then there is the extremely powerful otherwordly being meddling with their and make it Hell for their own benefit; There Both of them tend to get shunned because of the demonic part or try to keeping everyone at arms lenght as a defense mechanism; And i could name a few other similarities get deeper in them, but i recon the point has gotten across.
I think the "ragna is just sol" argument is gameplay related. Obviously, there are differences, but they play very similar. Story wise, they are mostly different.

I'm pretty sure people are usually comparing them in terms of gameplay, not story. Ragna is pretty overtly and unapologetically BlazBlues version of Sol in terms of his playstyle. They're both rushdown heavy shoto varients with the core gameplan of using strong mid and close range pokes to convert into close ranged pressure, where they make up for a mediocre mix game with strong pressure and amazing conversions. They both have a unique close ranged projectile built for pressure rather than zoning. They both have amazing DPs with similar animations and follow ups. Hells Fang and Gauntlet Hades are clear plays on the XX versions of Fafnir and Bandit Revolver/Bringer. They both have an install (for those not familiar with the older entries, Ragna had an install BEFORE overdrive was introduced as a mechanic). They even both got a divekick in later entries. To be clear this is not a bad thing, if anything I wish there were more characters that played like this, they're both really cool and surprisingly unique takes on the shoto archetype. I kind of wish we could get more of this brand of "rushdown shoto." But Ragnas *gameplay* is DEFINITELY inspired by Sol, and he's all the better for that.
Ragna is acually way more relatable. Unlike sol he's not incredibly overpowered and doesn't win every single battle he has to face, quite the opposite really, but he always ends up pulling through no matter what bullshit life throws at him.
At most, they reference each other in design and idea, but even then. Their body types and visual characteristics are different. Sol’s colours feel more dark, especially in his hair and skin tones, his body is more broad and overall he gives a very rough and bulky feel, especially in his sword. While ragna’s colours are more vibrant, with his white hair and brighter skin tone, his body is also very linear, skinnier for lack of a better word. Giving a very slim and sharp appearance, again reflected in his weapon. Yeah they both may be derived from the same character idea, they are both a fighting game MC that wears red and has a big sword, but they are unique and individual interpretations of that trope that fit the vibe of their respective games in a unique and interesting way. This was just an excuse to gush about the intricate design portions of each character and what makes them interesting design foils for each other
Both of these characters are very much different with how there stories play out and the philosophies of those stories but I will admit that I do like these two characters for similar reasons. I am a sucker of the brash character that seems like an asshole in a glance but are pretty chill dudes once you get to know them more.
Compared to sol, ragna was a tragic enough character that just hearing rebellion 1 makes me really emotional when thats probably not the intent of the song.
I mean, Sol, at least got a happy ending. Ragna didn't even get a single rest and keep getting screwed over and over but still unable got a happy ending he deserve.
I do love seeing comparisons of these characters, because let's face it, they're basically the two titans of Arcsys fighting games and you summed up their similarities and differences perfectly, I thought this was just gonna be a comparision of their movesets over the years since they both developed in a similar way, but an in-depth lore analysis of both of them was a pleasant surprise to me honestly, so kudos to you my dude, also Ragna isn't really erased, he kinda just fucked off from the blazblue world and wiped everyone's memories of them, but you are right how he basically wiped himself and memories of him from existence to protect everyone he cares about (save maybe Rachel, who was having some vague recollections of him when she saw his sword, but not enough to fully remember him sadly) but rn he's just chilling in the boundary, which I can see some potential of Ragna getting dragged into Guilty Gear as a DLC character since there's some vague implications that the backyard and boundary are one and the same, but I'm probably mainly just thinking that as an excuse to see my boy in a 3D fighting game. also, Sol's Dragon Install forms did look more like dragons originally (for examples, the silouettes that are over Sol when he uses it in the early games, Order Sol's Dragon Install Silouette and the Overture design of Dragon Install Sol) but since Vastedge they kinda got less draconic over time when they started making the Dragon Install an actual transformation so that's why he's got the whole ghostly shadow demon look now (which is probably both a reference to the dragon install activation animations in the early games and also how Gears used to be called "demons" in development of the first game, so yeah, there's a fun couple of facts for you all!)
I've never heard a better description in differentiating between the two than "Tragedy vs Comedy" I've always seen the Blazblue universe as the DC Comics to Guilty Gears Marvel Comics
I do like how blazblue lets you really fell the suffering and pain of a character. Guilty gear is nice cause you can laugh along with it, but there is something nice about watching ragna grow warmer to friends and family only to be forced to give it away

I don't know what's funnier, people comparing Sol and Ragna at surface level, or Jin and Ky for both being Goody Two Shoes swordsman with cross motifs. Like it takes three seconds to see the differences.
Sol and Ragna are both hot err i mean good characters with interesting plots but i prefer ragna tbh, i find his story more interesting and i find funny how the edgy protagonist is probably one of the mos sanest characters in the game because even after all that shit he goes through he's still a good guy, just tired of the life he has
If we really wanted to stretch the theory, both Sol and Ragna can be compared to Vash (from Trigun). Red-coded hero in a post-apocalyptic (and slightly wild west) world, massive bounty on their head, person of mass destruction... and a "brother" antagonist. But all 3 are products of their time and evolved with it. Sol is definitely more of an old-school anime protagonist, a little bit OP in the story, if you think about it, the plot of GG begins and end with him, you can follow his story, and you have (most) of the time-line. Ragna is definitely 2000-anime in it's "edgy" bits, but very much of the light-novel of his time. More of a "part and product of his world", than it's protag. The BB story has begun without him, he lived or suffered through its events alongside others; and (while real life caused the franchise to end at the same time as his last adventure,) there were possibilities to keep that world running and tell more stories, (I'll forever be mad that Nu-13 wearing Ragna's coat and sword will be stuck to the gacha game limbo, that design was amazing). Tldr: I like both, but Ragna kinda left a bigger impression on me.

Man they did Ragna dirty, his entire life was fucked up, pretty much 80% of the cast just shits on him aside from Jubei and Celica, and even then the only respite he got is by deleting himself from existence. Most of the time he's a pretty chill guy as how he got along with Taokaka but.

The first ever battle i've played in BlazBlue was in Calamity Trigger while testing out the game. Took one at Ragna, one look at Jin, got into the match, special intro cutscene, "Yup. This boy is Dante" and could never look at him or Jin any other way since then.(Hakumen is the one that fits Vergil's vibe the most though) It may be stupid on any level that isn't superficial, but i can't help it.
Sol is just stubborness dialed up to 100. Even when I-No lures him into a trap where he kills his past self; He refuses to disappear and just doesn't. I also like how he plays around the trope about housing a greater power that might go out of control; But Sol is a scientist, he simply just invents something to keep that in check. He simply uses the Flame of Corruption just as another tool. I mean the dude made a God Killing weapon as part of his hobby. It bleeds into his fighting style which basically is just attack with wild abandon; In fact Sol is suppose to be a pretty shitty fighter, and mostly wins by upping his firepower.

What you mean by that, Ragna made good friends by the end of Chronophantasm. Hes relation ship with noel and jin was healed by cf and celica was always there for him. Ragan built bonds that were real

I dont know much about blazblue (and I dont think I'll vibe as much with it as guilty gear), but the different takes between the two franchises are fascinating to me. I can't wait for the eventual gg x blazblue crossover game since sol's story has been finished, and I'm curious as to what's in store for blazblue next.
Sol is Mainly More Experience Type of character Rather than Ragna. also Sol Gives me the Old Badass Type Man of Character while Ragna he just gives the type of Edgy Lord Character but gets likable as the story Progress.
4:09 ngl i'll disagree that chipp's story isnt fleshed out bc he had an entire novel to himself (lightning the argent) and his character arc is seeking revenge for the death of his master -> abandoning his revenge -> becoming president to improve other people's lives through the games zappa was a joke character for the games he was playable in, but his offscreen development made him a more fleshed out character in xrd i'll give you giovanna however, she has the least amount of lines in strive
"Fireball". DP. Pretty basic gameplay to get you used to the game. They're Shotos. A different breed of Shoto than Jin and Ky, who are far more traditional Shotos, but they're Shotos nonetheless.
Sol is Terry Bogard with a sword, so yeah, he is kind of a shoto. Although I don't think "shoto" is a very useful descriptor when they don't seem to be close to either Ken or Ryu or Akuma.
I mean.....sort of. Bandit revolver and gauntlet hades serve very different purposes. A lot of their moves serve pretty different uses, but if you boil thrm down, yes, they are both well-rounded rushdown shotos
