It's actually a realistic thing that's happening today on purpose. Anti-Tank and AGM missiles are capable of tracking targets that are low and slow enough for them to effectively track. The use of these weapons actually dates back to the cold war so it is perfectly on theme with them being used like this. The limitations are going to be how well this behavior is simulated and programmed into the game. If modeled accurately for this behavior then it will be semi-reliable as any target that is moving too fast for accurate tracking will avoid getting locked/tracked. I think you could use AGMs on A-10s as well since they aren't the fastest aircraft either. So anything slow and hot enough for the tracker to maintain picture on is fair game.
Counting that Su-25T's successfuly shot down training targets by using Skval TV (that uses similar locking technique as TV maverick seeker heads) and Vikhr laser guided missile. It is totally possible, but it is more of emergency thing if we are talking about real life, not the game.
Are the Viggen mavs IR or TV? Either way it seems plausible that they could track a hind. I 've never done that but I have used the MACLOS missiles of the Viggen to kill bombers and choppers. I got it bound to a duel shock controller analogue stick ... You just gotta put it in LUFT mode. Pretty fun to use and the payload is huge. Immune to counter measures.
You should try changing the brightness and contrast of the tv screen. It can be done with the two buttons on the left rear side of your cockpit . Helps tremendously in spotting targets.
I mean IRL an F-15 killed a chopper with a laser guided bomb. I can't see a reason that the Mav's seeker shouldn't be able to "see" a helicopter. I think the issue is that helicopters could maneuver in ways that the Mav isn't designed for. But if they fly straight and level why not. Also keep in mind that some of these things haven't been done largely because the opportunity hasn't presented itself. The Gamey issue I see is that the RB-75 is completely broken. It's by far the most effective maverick in game because it doesn't see any terrain objects at all. So it's extremely easy to lock up targets like Hinds in situations that would be impossible for even other jets in DCS. This bug alone completely ruined the Viggen for me. So yes its a completely gamey trick because the seeker didn't lock onto a telephone pole in the background because it can only see the Hind. But as for the seeker seeing the Hind why wouldn't it be able to?
ah I am not familiar with him really so that is good to hear. I did some youtube searching but did not see any other videos on this so maybe my youtube recommended list didn't surface it up
As far as whether it's possible, it can be done in daylight hours by all versions of the AGM-65, but you'd need later models of the Maverick like the D and onwards at night. Reason being the Mavericks are TV-Contrast seekers which see in black and white and are looking for a differential contrast in their image against a background, though you were on the right track with heat. It's just that the IR aspect applies to versions equipped with a thermal imaging mode. So, theoretically, yes, it is 100% possible to do this IRL
I've been using mavericks against hinds in the A-10, since the sidewinders almost always lose track. It's kind of funny how effective they are. It doesnt usually kill the heli, but it cripples it, and they have to land or rtb
@@skslchd7664 I suppose some kind of damage "bug". No idea how the warheads are coded but if they're made to have low splash and "penetrate armor" (just an example) and the helis have no armor value, they just get hit with splash damage. It's probably a workaround to make the Maverick powerful against the targets it is meant to hit, but also not create an instant death bubble on the ground that just kills everything. Don't know if this "bug" has been fixed, but I've created missions on the editor where I have to drop Mk 20 Rockeyes on parked aircraft in an enemy base. Well, I dropped two and lo and behold, I get no BDA notification. I do another pass to drop two more, and I damage just _one_ aircraft. In real life 4 Rockeyes would have shredded the aircraft and set them on fire. I tried it multiple times and the only explanation I could come up with is aircraft being "transparent" to some types of damage.
I mean IRL they prob would lose lock after they either flare because of the lack of dynamic range and the image would completely wash out and also the fast changing background would probably make it lose track too.
The behaviour seems realistic to me, the mav can get false locks on trees, hot building surfaces etc IRL sometimes, so it would be more than capable of locking an tracking a helicopter, iirc I believe I read about pilots in desert storm doing just that at some point (although I don't think they actually killed any airborne targets with mavericks)
I wish a grid square could be given when ground targets get hit. It would give a way to hunt helos without a human gci. It also seems realistic that ground targets under fire would give there position to CAP flights for assistance. Idk how feasible this is coding wise though. It's just a thought and I love the server.
Ehhh with the amount of viggens I've killed with Shturm or 30mm I don't have anything against this tactic and that could also be considered gamey and unrealistic, most of those Hind players in your vid are flying too high anyway. Teach them the proper lesson.
Gamey. No counterplay if used correctly, there were some viggens going really fast and throwing these out at more than 10km( outside OL merge ehich most helos use).. so you're transiting to the front and just die with no warning. One of the many straws that broke the back of heli gameplay in the time of blue stacks and GCI helo hunting abuse.
I seem to remember the Viggen using Mavs against bigger aircraft was supposedly a legit Swedish tactic, the Mavs replacing the Rb-05 in every role (I'm guessing the improved hit chances of the mavs made up for their lack of proximity fuzing compared to the 05s).
As to whether they perform realistically against helicopters, I don't know. I assume they can maneuver well enough if launched at a good range and angle, and maybe countermeasures should be more effective against them
in the gulf war, a F15E killed a hind with a LBG. Helos are not a so easy targets for AA misiles, but they are slow enough for ground ammo. In ukraine hinds and Ka52 have been downed using antitank misilles, so, it look like a very valid, and feasible strategy in real life.
The RB-75 used in by the Viggen aren't IR-based, they are TV guided. Contrast is basically can you see a black thing on the camera? If so, it can lock on it. Can it keep it? Depends on the background and situation. So I'm very positive this would be possible IRL. The issue is that any kind of point track in DCS is wayyyy too perfect, and this should be an issue IRL whereas it is not that much in DCS. Another issue which I think got fixed is that the Viggen RB-75 used to have no seeker limit (both in position and speed), meaning it was VERY good at high off-boresight tracking. I think this is fixed though.
Have been doing this for a whie XD, interestingly the RB75 can lock and track fixed wings, managed to lock su25 and mig21 but they never guide properly after launch, even at close range and no defensive maneuvers
@@jycannel4626 there is. Its just hidden you wont see it on F10. Its there above king hussein and Aleppo. And there are also search radar accros the map hidden from F10 map
Cut your A/B and start flaring, while pulling "harder" on the stick Otherwise youll never be able to defend a Fox2 😅 The A/B cut is very powerful EDIT: Thats how I do it in the Viggen and it has proven itself very effective against virtually every missile in the CW era
Honestly I find the rb05 more effective... you can instantly visually find a target get it in the pipper and fire... no need to lock with the seeker. When you fire the rb05 using the pipper it helps alot I've only ever killed helis this way if they are really low though
The TV guided munitions in DCS don't have any programming to loose lock. I would say it is realistic if the Hind were flying over a barren area, or hovering. But this is the problem with all of the TV guided systems in these games. We can't simulate an actual contrast lock without a significant amount of processing power, so systems like the Mavs and the Shkval are simplified. Realistically, a contrast lock on a moving helicopter should be solid if the helicopter is over sand or water, since the background is consistent. But flying over a forest, town, streets, or anything else that complicates the detected "border" around the helicopter would absolutely cause issues for a contrast lock. Flares should also work extremely well, since the target itself would appear to widen and morph. Camouflage should also work against a TV seeker sometimes, but not an IR Mav of course. There are different types of contrast lock as well. If I remember correctly, some Maverick variants used the shadow underneath a vehicle to lock on, so that camouflage wouldn't be as effective against them. This would of course mean that a flying target can't be locked. I would consider this type of weapon use extremely gamey and unrealistic but perfectly acceptable in the context of DCS engagements, since Ka-50s and Su-25Ts have been doing it for a long time.
The Maveric(s) on the Viggen are TV (optically) guided and not IR. So I would not expect chaff or flare to impact them. Smoke however would. Interesting tactic though.
did this on a multiplayer server recently, albeit a black shark, i think. still, should work... works on the same principle as ground targets, smart id say.
What settings do people use on this server? I have high specs and 32gb of ram but get like 5-10 fps whenever i play on this server with the lowest possible settings. My ram is always at 100% too, which i dont know why thats the case.
You can kill other helis too... With the A10 also... Tried it already, sometimes I do lock something and just shoot and only when I get the confirmation I see it was actually an heli
Ive been doing and seen plenty of other people kill fighters with Mavericks and Vikhrs in the A10, Viggen and Su25 for the last 15 years. No its not new lol.
I just deleted them thanks for mentioning that. They always post every time I post a video. It is perplexing to me that RU-vid sometimes false blocks genuine posts and then misses these obvious spam posts.
I know! Talk about kickin a man while he’s down. First Petro shits the bed so the Hind is at 50% effectiveness, now we’re going to have swarms of Viggens slinging mav’s all over the server!
