I wasn't sure about the pronunciation of "Tonton Macoute" so I watched an interview with Duvalier himself and he pronounced it like "muck-owe't" so I did too. Most people say "mack-oot", however.

Haiti was the first country to recognise Greece as a sovereign country back in 15 january of 1822. Jan paul boitier (i am not so sure of his name) sent 100 tons of coffee to our country to be sold and the money to be given to our government. Every greek knows this and it is written in our history books. Also greece was one of the first countries to send humanitarian help to the island after the earthquake. Doctors, engineers, medication. We stand for Haiti!

No one has recognized Greece as a sovereign country despite it ruling the known world for 600 years, being the global language for 1000 years, and fathering Western culture, and governance. And still, no one said the Greeks were sovereign, that's the real achievement.

No one exploited them for centuries and the US got involved largely due to Haiti's leaders being shot, killing themselves, fleeing the country, poisoned, or in J. Vilbrun Guillaume Sam's case, dismembered.

At a painful moment, reflecting on Haiti's deadly earthquake 11 years ago today, I decided to search the history of Haiti on youtube. I admire your ability to squeeze in so much in so little time. And thank you for doing so without the harsh judgment most people have when recounting the experiences of the Haitian people.

As a fellow haitian who was celebrating my 1st birthday of my life and when the earthquake happened. Our family called us and my grandma passed out on the couch when we saw the news. That day was a living nightmare and most of our family were in Haiti during it. Haiti has a interesting history

@@jeritheweirdchild I’m so sorry. The earthquake was terrible. My mom had been visiting Haiti a little bit before it happened and ended her trip early and came back to the US 2 days before it happened. If she had stayed 2 extra days she probably would’ve died. Haiti is pretty underrated though, hardly anyone pays attention to it anymore.

Sadly a couple family members died in the earthquake, as well as the house that had all our history in it. It fell on my uncle and thank God he survived and was able to get out. It was a really bad time in life (What an unlucky brithday celebration for me ;_;)

Haiti should be the richest country in the Caribbean and most powerful but because the leaders of Haiti have like zero ties to the country as they are Arab French and Jewish people that live there and mulattos. These leaders are vile and America supports them

What? Acting like Spanish Haiti was forced to join Haiti when it was though negotiations with Boyer and your Elites. La Trinitaria or your political elites wanted to join Haiti instead of Gran Colombia my boy. Now, during the poor economic situation with Boyer in 1842 both sides wanted to get rid of him. With an added step you guys left since as Juan Pablo foreseen what's to come. I also understand Dominicans frustration with Haitians due to Faustin Soulouque raids. But that was him and not all of Haiti. He should've done the proper way through negotiations as Boyer did.

It is such a shame because we have so many fond memories of Haiti but what is going on in Haiti now is nauseous. However, not everyone thinks Haiti is Hell and that sentiment would not just be limited to Graham Greene were he alive. Of course, Graham was one of the great writers of the 20th Century. One other ex-spook used to love Haiti until the TonTon Macoute hunted him down like a wild animal. If you relish and yearn for Haitian spy thrillers as curiously and bizarrely compelling as Graham Greene’s Comedians, yearn for the cruel stability of the Duvaliers and have frequented Hôtel Oloffson you're never going to put down Bill Fairclough's fact based spy thriller Beyond Enkription in The Burlington Files series. It's a raw noir thriller but it is so real you may have nightmares of being back in Port au Prince anguishing over being a spy on the run. The trouble is, if you were a spook being chased by the TonTon Macoute in the seventies you were usually cornered and ... well best leave it to your imagination or simply read Beyond Enkription. It’s considered compulsory reading for espionage aficionados. See theburlingtonfiles.org and if you have any questions remember the best quote from The Burlington Files to date is "Don't ask me, I'm British" but do read The Comedians first if you have not done so recently.
