Thought it was super interesting that Earn starts off the show trying to peddle something at the airport, only to be rudely turned down constantly, and then at the end of season 2 when confronted with somebody else in that same exact position he rudely turns them down.
I find it weird that you talk about surrealism and realism without mentioning The Woods or Teddy Perkins, I think they're the best examples of the mixture of those styles.
*I had straight nightmares after that episode where Darius was trying to buy the piano from the Micheal Jackson looking dude. And that flashback episode where his classmate committed suicide was deep af* *Edit: I just found out that Donald Glover played the Michael Jackson looking dude and although it makes sense now, MY MIND IS STILL BLOWN*
'Teddy Perkins' was definitely the best episode of the 2nd season; very scary. 'Barber Shop' made me go insane and 'Helen' was very weird. Those are top-notch back to back episodes. Love the variation!
Underrated? It's won a whole mess of awards, one of the highest rated shows on Rotten Tomato and Metacritic I believe and has been best rated show on FX for two years. Alot of people watching it too. It's a great series and popularly recognized, far from underrated lol
k1dkur0 I think he means underviewed. I dunno bowt across the pond but in the UK it barely registers in public interest. I work in a film store (yeah people watch online now whatever) and had my first customer everask about it yesterday.
Day Man Okay that makes sense then. In the US it's been pretty huge, but I can understand it being niche in the UK. I feel like people in the UK would love it given its kind of humor
It’s finally glad to relate to people that love this show in the comments. I try to get my friends to watch it but they keep pushing it off. This show has so many freaking layers it makes rewatching episodes a pleasure. I don’t know about you guys, but I feel as if the characters are so cleaned out and real that they kind of become your friends and you stick with them through all of their flaws and just want to see them succeed. It’s not the only show that does but IMO I think it’s the best.
I definitely agree you feel close to them and also compare them to yourself and people you know. That’s why Earn was so frustrating to watch. It felt like I was watching myself or my friend continuously fuck things up. I love this show.
I grew up in a super racist household. I saw this from a young age and have done my best to avoid the same behavior. That being said, black movies/music/topics have always made me a little uncomfortable. I've always avoided black culture, while still believing that everyone should be treated equally. I had to MAKE myself watch Atlanta and I'm SOOOO happy I did. Such an awesome show with incredibly smart things to say while still being hilarious. But perhaps the more important thing is, it exposed me to a culture that has always made me feel a little uncomfortable and helped me see it in a new light.
Do you mind suggesting some? I'd love to experience more. While I may feel uncomfortable with it, nobody ever grew into a better person by being closed off to new experiences and staying in their comfort bubble.
*Your honestly is appreciated. I hope that you continue to keep an open mind and comfortably broaden your horizons. We all have more in common than we realize*
Daniel Campbell the problem is that black people identify mlre with their black skin than with being american. White people in America identify themselves as americans first and at whites later on (don't think it's that important for them anyways - except in your case maybe). Black people should stop seperating themselves and start seeing themselves as equals as most people do anyways. Start listening to people like Kanye and Candace Owens and break your DemocRATS induced conditioning to have a voter-base. And stop leaving your babymamas - single mother households (which most black people tend to grlw up in) are also a major reason you as a people fail, because it needs both parents to create a great upbringing.
BAN was my favorite!!! The commercial breaks too. Okay, when I get home I'm binging the show again. I love it! 💘 It's also one of the most rewatchable shows, peeling back the layers and noticing the details once missed.
The most surreal thing about this video is that it talks about a music video that's an advertisement for an artificial chocolate drink, talks about Marxism and Capitalism, and ends on an advertisement. Woah man.
Alex Debstepper there's a difference between an advert that hides it's true form and an advert attached to the end of a piece of work in order to keep the lights on.
Day Man Ok, I get the difference, but still surreal to make a point about society. And in this case, there is a parallel to 'needing to advertise to keep ya music career afloat' and 'needing to advertise to keep ya RU-vid thingy afloat'. It's a sad reflection of society. Pretty surrealist if you think about it. Quite pitiful also.
The correlation between surrealism and marxism seems absurd to me. The way he motivates the critique of society as marxism is purely shallow. The show critiques more than society, it is a critique of representation based on its peculiar structure of the plot.
@@robdewberry2587 I know it’s 3 years later lol Franklin is played by Damson Idris. He’s in Donald Glovers new mini series Swarm if you haven’t seen it yet. Just in case you were still wondering😊
I literally had a guy break up with me because I said I said I would eat a dog if I were starving on a desert island and he said he would never kill a dog under any circumstances.
I would probably just eat dog right now for the hell of it. Wouldn't ever want to harm a dog or contribute to harming dogs in the future, though. Fuck it, meat is meat is meat.
There's a decent channel that has been breaking down Atlanta Season 2, at least. I don't think they have the team or $$$ that Wisecrack has, but its still pretty good.
The episode when it was a talk show with Paper Boi and the transgender activist that has the new segments and commercials is the greatest/funniest episode of tv I’ve seen
Thank you for giving Atlanta the deep dive it was due. It's layers of meaning and fisticuffs of feels needed to be explored, and you guys continue to prove that you are the ones for the job. This episode made me full on fan girl like Knives at a Sex Ba Bomb concert.
To reduce it as such is... not enough. It's a smart commentary on being black but from respect to Atlanta. The Boondocks do it.. well, from the boondocks of suburbia.
I can see why you both disagree, but if you evaluate both shows regardless of their plot & storyline.. They both share comedic/satire elements & are similar in a lot of ways. No, they are not the same show.. but are closely related.
Atlanta is a show about the environment of local people in Atlanta; they just happen to be black (because that's who lives in those neighbourhoods of Atlanta). It's not a commentary on Blackness or elements of the African American culture--just a few that are relevant to the lifestyles of people from this region in this time period; they could do the same show in Seattle and it would have white people and probably make fun of hipsters and liberal-arts majors... Shows like Boondocks and Dear White People are specific satirical looks at black culture from the perspective of movements, subcultures, and stereotypes within the African American experience in the US. Atlanta is a show about a few people from an area of Atlanta and there's some race stuff 'cause, you know, that's what we deal with...
@@pulkmees Agreed. I'd say it was a straight forward look at how really messed up life can be and how surreal the results of abuse can make someone. But it was uncomfortable how easy to read that episode was.
Brilliant show. The surrealism, realism and the comedy are all rolling 20's. So thankful that a show like this exists. End of the episode "Value" was the hardest I've laughed in years. Thanks D.G. and Crew!
"Atlanta uses surrealism, to bring us back to reality" - You 100% nailed it with this, I've been trying to figure out what makes this show so perfect and by often focusing on how real it is, but this sums it up. The video was great and very well put together, ashamed to say I'm only just subscribing.
Damn I missed childish gaminos "Awaken, My Love!" album right on the wall when hes talking to the racist white dude. Thats meta AF. Donald playing a dude while his album as another dude appears on his own show playing that dude
As always love WIsecrack videos and I can't wait to see the direction for the future. I would love to see a Philosophy of Alejandro Jodorowsky, Frank Herbert, and Neil Gaiman.
this is why i absolutely love this show it perfectly portrays the absurdities of real life to the point where it actually trips me out because its so Outlandish it shouldn't be a thing but it Really is and people except its as the Norm.
i've seen a lot of tv shows in my life and i gotta say, atlanta might be the best one ever when it's finished. even if season 3 is half as good as 1 &2 it's still gonna be way better than any other comedy or half hour show ever. there's just so much to go back to in every episode, it's pretty remarkable that something this unique exists today with all of the formulaic shows that exist
Channel Criswell, Super Eyepatch Wolf, and Glass Reflections offer quality videos exploring deeper ideas in Cowboy Bebop. Not to say that because those channels made videos about Cowboy Bebop no other channel should, but if WiseCrack never gives their perspective on CB, there are good channels that have offered theirs. I mean if WC did a CB video, I'd be one of the first there.
I'm about to finally watch this show. I can't imagine a more convincing tribute. Folks toss the word 'genius' - and 'surreal' for that matter - and you know the meaning of both. Don't know if I'll be back, but will always be grateful.
David Lewis that would be done season by season if not on a per episodes bassis at times. Literally that's a channel on it's own. That series is so much to unpack. I find new things every time I think about it.
Just started watching Atlanta It took a minute for me to get into it but it’s really cool, you never know what vibe an episode is gonna take. Some have you laughing so hard you cry, and some make you straight up cry
Ha, somehow it doesn't surprise me at all that Lakeith Stanfield is a Wisecrack fan. Atlanta is one of my favorite shows on television right now. I tell friends that I can't say whether they'll like it or not, but it's totally worth seeing. It's life (if life was hitting the good stuff).
"Kevin James could be married to three different beautiful women?" Two of the women are the same person, and in the second instance they were co-workers, not married. Weird detail to get so wrong with all the available, equally valid, other examples.
I'm an Atlanta enthusiast to say the least and you guys killed it! I love how you are open to all sorts of stories! Hopefully we will see Insecure and Marco Polo soon!
will never listen to Shake that Laffy Taffy the same way again also how have I not heard of this show before now? it is practically tailor made for me going to definitely check this out
I seriously love you guys... I could never explain the reason why I loved "Atlanta" and now I see why...seriously keep it up and make an anime podcast too!!
Dammit guys! I love your show but wasnt expecting to be spoiled about I, Daniel Blake, shit. That was a movie I was waiting to watch for a couple years now... dammn...
They came to my home town to film for the German Town episode (Helen, GA), and I missed them. It's so nice to know that they will go to even the smallest of places for the right shot and don't resort to sets all the time.
I would be very interested to see an additional commentary about how they further use the surreal as critique within the new movie "Sorry to bother you". Has a great and unique take on several topics brought up about society and human worth.
My fav. Will always be the entire thing with the invisible car. From conversation inside the club to paper boi getting hit with the invisible car. Huge fan of all things Lynch, Twin Peaks etc. so no wonder I loved it. But I think that whole thing with the second coming of Psycho Michael Jackson and the rainbow key piano is a close second 🤣
I lived in the A from age 3 to 18 and came back after a 10 year leave. I saw it grow from a small city to the congested, multicultural beast it is today. Trust me, this show ain't as surreal as you think.
