Swallow-tailed Kite are unmistakable with their deeply forked tail and bold black-and-white plumage. Birds fly with barely a wingbeat and maneuver with twists of their incredible tail, as they chase dragonflies or plucks frogs, lizards, snakes, and nestling birds from tree branches in the summer skies above swamps of the Southeast.

Don't see them here that often, but I just had a flock over my house. Noticed when I heard calls that I didn't recognize. Too far up for pictures, but that tail is unmistakable. Stunning. What a treat❤

If I was any other animal on the planet, could trade places with any one of them, it would be a swallowtail kite. This bird is so majestic, so alive, Stoically animated, so anatomically perfectly designed. What a life it would be soaring and living as a dominant bird species. You can have your Hawks, Condors, Falcons, and Eagles..... give me the Swallow-tailed “ man about town “ Kite. Seriously.

I live in Huffman Texas close to Lake Houston. A couple of days ago there were probably fifty soaring overhead. We stopped and took Photo's! They are so elegant and graceful.

honestly, one of if not the coolest looking birds on the planet. I'm so happy to have a few living in my area, seeing them fly is always so majestic.

I was outside just two days ago doing a little rain gutter maintenance and happened to see a soaring bird out of the corner of my eye. Turned to look, expecting it to be a vulture, but was pleasantly surprised to see one of these sleek little birds soaring on the winds. It's not super rare exactly for me to see them, but it's rare enough that I always consider it to be a treat. Gotta get serious one day and bust out the wildlife lens on those mo fos.

It looks like a real flapping bird than the kite and the head moves to, so it is just a real bird in video

What’s the advantage of having a swallow tail?
@aprilhowellyoung3557

Such a good question I just had to look it up, as my favorite birds have swallow tails...Why do some birds have forked tails? In short, forked tails are all about reducing aerodynamic cost (in terms of drag-to-lift ratio) when you start increasing your tail length, but there's a lot more to it than that - in any case, the mechanistic engineering-ey explanation aside, as /u/Matty1977 pointed out, they ultimately help with aerial agility.

April Howell Young Speedy flying, too, I guess. Fastest fish species have forked tails too. Amazing nature design!
