The classic 1939 Korda Victory rubber-powered free-flight model is the star of this film, brought to you by the building & flying skills of Peter Kaiteris, who has built three Victorys from 2016 thru 2022, while losing the first two via out of sight flights...OOS. His third Victory continues to soar in 2024. Filmed by Tom Hallman & Pater Kaiteris using an iPhone 11 & 14 Pro, a Nikon D3400 70-300mm, and a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS. Music via the talented musicians at artist.io, who breathe life into my films.

Beautiful flights...a sight to behold....thank you for sharing.

Some models just fly incredibly well and watching those Korda Victorys I'd class that design as being brilliant.

I was always read that they flew great. I gotta get one of those kits and build it. Nice!

I have a Korda Victory that I built about 6 years ago. In spite of going to the dark side and flying electric RC, I still get it out from time to time because it is a stunningly good flier. It never fails to impress.

I built a few rubber models in northern CA while growing up in the 60's and 70's, and 'borrowed' my dad's carved props for some of them. I love watching rubber/ff models because it takes me back to the times of having to use that delicate technique to build them and cover them with tissue. Also the flying part and the reward of trimming one of them for a good flight. My Dad loved the Korda Wakefield models. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Tom! Peter sure has those Victorys figured out! One of the things that is so great about F/F rubber, is that there are SO MANY really good flying designs out there! You can literally spend a lifetime trying to build and fly all of them! Thanks again for sharing these GREAT videos!

I agree...so many models. After 30 years of scale rubber, I've only recently taken the deep dive into old-time rubber...and I'm having a blast. They fly so well, with not nearly the same amount of building time invested. It's a good place for newbies to start too, so I hope they're keying in to my message. Thx again for the kind words.

There's a special poignancy of contradicting feeling about F/F rubber power OOS happenings.. Like its "oh no, I built & flew the thing well enough to lose it in a thermal".. Full marks to Mr Korda. I see that Victory #3 has a DT on board.. These Victories are similar to a Kiel Kraft model, if memory serves it was 'Ajax' by name. Mine flew into a tree on Beverley Westwood and by the time we got it down it'd turned into confetti. Thanks Tom and Peter! Brilliant stuff. 🌟👍

Marvellous. I think I still have the plan somewhere of the original version with twin motors. Losing a model OOS is a strange feeling, both proud and sad. Luckily, the one time it happened to me I had a phone call next day from a friendly farmer several miles away - as I had my name and phone number on the model. Happy, happy days. Noel

U were lucky, Noel! Most OOS ships end up in the trees...or at least that's what I imagine.

RC rudder only DT makes sense to me. I will build one of these this year.

Parting is such sweet sorrow. You can’t beat having a dt system preferably rdt, together with a tracker, preferably gps. BMK do both. 😀

No. 1, left turn. No. 2 and 3, right turn. Plastic props instead of original balsa, extra weight allows more motor for balance, could use longer motor. Tradeoff between more energy and higher sinking speed, hard to tell which is better. Used a peg instead of hook. Victory and Wakefield are not the same. Wakefield kits do not represent the historic winning plane. At the contest, it was discovered that the plane did not fit the rules, he had to add a strip of wood across the bottom of the fuselage to meet the cross section rule and trim the trailing edges of the wing and stab. See Korda biography at AMA.

The good news is that the plane flew great. The bad news is it flew so well it disappeared. Have you ever had a model fly OOS, and then have someone call you and tell you that they found it so that you could go and pick it up?

Yes! Back in '94 at the Nats in Geneseo, NY, I had a 22" MiG-3 go high into the blue/gray haze, toward the college which is about 3/4 mile away, up a slope. Could never find it. Three days later, a real estate agent called and asked if I had lost a white model with red stars on it? I freaked. Apparently it landed in the middle of the small town, in a parking lot, under her car against the curb. She saw it when she backed out. A friend flew me back there in his small Cessna, and I picked it up a few days later. No damage to the model. Two months later, it flew away in North Carolina, in another boomer. I built another, this time with a DT. I still have that model...but it never flew as well as the first.

Yes, PK has DTs on all three. The first ran into a boomer from the get go...even started to fall back down, but then the Thermal Gods decided on having an even closer look, and pulled her up into a speck...DT deployed...didn't matter. #2 had a DT popped down field into a massively thick and densely large crop, never to be found. #3...we'll see what happens in '24. :-)

@@maxfliart Hinze's Law; my airplane will always seek out and land in the top of the tallest tree in the park. At first I thought I was being sarcastic, but on reflection, I saw that it was really happening, more often than might be expected. And for a good reason; as it circles down, the first thing it encounters is the tallest tree.

Surprised you guys don't have some sort of dethermal ability to these wonderful models, then again however I do understand why you might not have something like that in them... "Glad to have known they flew so great, really sad to see they flew up an up an up an off and away because they flew so well!"... 😔

The steep mushing descent is distinctive of DT. She came down like a Storch.

can you explain the rationale for the use of polyhedral. ever. because, its use results in a bit more lift being lost and a bit more drag being made.
