A viewer requested some info on putting C series over top of fully cured H series. We didn't have an answer for him, so John set up a quick experiment. Pics are at the end, including a couple of bonus pics of a separate project.

This answered a question I had. Since I wanted to coat a set of calipers most of the C series reds can hold up to the heat, so was going to use an H series with a C series bronze over top.

Note on H series on top of H series: you will NOT have adhesion issues in general, and if you need to repeat it, just rough up the existing H series surface with medium sand paper and then spray over and bake. There aren't any issues

Yeah, H series will stick to itself, I don't know why people or NIC says otherwise. If you sand it super smooth to a glass mirror finish and try to put H series on top then you may have issues. That's the only case I can think of.

I know this is an older video but I’m really interested in seeing how it would hold up to heat like if it was on a header or exhaust seeing how the H is under the C on the substrate.
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote Год назад
It would fail. The H is the series actually on the metal, and H tops out at around 500 degrees.

I know you aren’t a C series expert from the comments below, but do you know the re-coat time of c series if I wanted multiple coats? I’m think the 45 minutes as the spec sheet says tack free in 45-60 minutes. Also I saw your comment below on cerakote c series durability vs H and elite. I’ve been using it on golf club shafts and putter heads. Do you think I would have better scratch resistance with H or Elite vs C series? If so why even sell the C series? Thanks!!!
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 6 месяцев назад
As long as it's tack free, you are good to go. I'd start checking an edge at about 45 minutes. Once it's tack free, you want to get the next color on within 30 minutes or so. There's a trade-off. H and Elite are more durable, but aren't that great at UV (some colors suck). C is great at UV, but the durability isn't as good. C is really good for heat resistance, which is what they market it for.

Quick question for you: I have a bottle of C series for a shotgun barrel and action because the length will not fit in the oven I use. What are your thoughts on stenciling off the guys initials on the action and spraying the FDE C series over the stencil to leave the black initials visible? Would this be a significant hit in the durability and end up chipping where the stencil was?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 6 лет назад
I'm in unknown territory there, but I'd say you'd be ok. The problem with C series is the durability. I'd recommend clear coat over it.

I may have missed it in the comments but I was wondering about recoating with C after it's been fully cured and a couple weeks of use. To see where more coats were needed and touch those areas up. Also, the baked hardness of initial application H series combined with more colors for top coat C series. What prep for exterior surfaces only?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 4 года назад
Cerakote doesn't like to stick to hard (fully cured) Cerakote. We honestly don't have a lot of experience with C series because there's not really anything that comes in we need it for. We either use H series or Elite on everything. Prep for C series is the same. Degrease, gasout, sandblast.

Any chance youd be willing to fold a crease into a corner and then fold it back straight? Id imagine one if not both substrates would fail, just curious which is stronger? Everyone that i know thats used the air dry, has loved it. Thanks for the video!

I just did. No change. I personally don't like the C series from an abrasion resistance standpoint, but if you need high heat, it's the only real option.

Not saying that they are intentionally misleading people, but I've found some instances where they put out info that isn't exactly accutate. With the C over H, I personally wouldn't do it on a project, but it did work as far as adhesion at a basic level. I'd still be concerned with the feel of it.

I've had good results doing this but after h series is fully cured you still need to do a light etch before top coating with c series
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 2 года назад
I've seen other people doing an etch, but I'd personally be leery of doing that because I'd be worried about compromising the mil thickness of the coating. We've been doing it without an etch for years without any issues (C series clear).

Do you always cover fully cured H-series with MC/156, 157? Can you tack out H-series and spray MC 156 and cure with the normal oven cure process of H-series?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 4 года назад
It depends on the customer. I have MC157 on all of my personal guns. No. You should never bake a C series product. In my experience, it becomes brittle if it cures too fast. Fully cure the base coat, spray on the air cure clear, ignore it for a week, assemble.

FYI: Spoke to NIC, you can flash cure H series over Elite series for camo patterns. Elite must be flash cured too, not fully cured! Elite is more durable but the 18:1 required paint/hardner ratio leaves a satin finish where H series at 20:1 or 21:1 leaves a nice flat finish.

The elite series is very flat even at 18:1, and cerakote in general is very flat even with 12:1 hardener on H series. This is of course, subjective but compared to most spray paints, cerakote does tend to run on the flat side
