Recently I tried an external display for my iPad with a single USB-C/HDMI cable. Seems promising, but it was painful as there was no charging, WIFI only, and volume control didn't work (should do it on the display). The docking station/unit is the way to go, but when I invest I'll go for 10G ethernet, mainly because I want to use RDP to VMs on Proxmox and latency matters at high resolution.

I enjoy experimenting and figured this was Thunderbolt so I may as well try it. I want to try just the HDMI port to see if it works that way. 10g Ethernet sounds intriguing and totally understand your point on latency.
