Whoever threatened workers if they wanted to leave should be thrown in prison. Also, that tornado seriously looked like an EF5 to me.

I'm glad you returned, Ken. We all need to understand how a devastating tornado can have such a long-term affect on a community. Mayfield Strong.

A very moving video, Ken. Thanks for producing and sharing it with us. My heart goes out to those in Mayfield KY, and the surrounding communities, for the determination and tenacity to rebuild their communities. It was a terrible tornado. Your video serves as a place marker in history for the area.

My heart goes out for those people, I remember when this happened. Thanks for following up this tragic event with such a moving video documenting the damage Mayfield sustained, but also how the people stayed the course and have started rebuilding their town. Great drone footage, excellent narration and good edit. Thanks for sharing Ken.

Thanks Ken, stayed there one week prior to the tornado. Our gracious hosts on the outskirts were some of the fortunate.

That order not to leave, while it killed 8 people, is probably the decision which saved many lives. If these people did go home, they most definitely would not have been alive.
@roybell15

You are absolutely correct while some of them did live very very close to the factory a good number of the workers or from the surrounding counties that were hired in through out of town, temp agencies and these people I will say a good 60% had at least a 30 minute drive to the residence if they would have left on that last break between tornado warnings, they most definitely would have been on the road in the middle of the dark and if you are not from this area, close your eyes and pictured driving through the woods on a skinny back road, and then running into a monster EFI tornado with nowhere to take shelter, but the woodsis not your town. You cannot just get out and run to someone’s house to take cover. There are areas where there are several miles and miles and with nowhere to take shelter. Now had the candle factory let all of their employees go at Freehill. They would still be on the hook for the people that were killed so either way the candle factory was going to have to take the wrap.

I went from Henderson the day after to see and document it with my camera. I was forever changed by what I saw. It is one thing to watch the programs and see the videos of damage left behind but to walk through and see and smell and experience it is another. As soon as I found a place to park and started walking through the town I was overcome and just started weeping for these people. I will never forget that day. I saw people joining together and helping each other. God Bless each and everyone of all that were affected by those storms.

Great update. Thanks for sharing, Ken. A local church here in Michigan partnered with Help Build Hope Missions and built 57 walls for a 4 bdrm home to be assembled onsite in Kentucky by Habitat for Humanity. Just some of the volunteer work that's being done to help the tornado victims.

It really hurts to see this because I have so many fond memories in my childhood inside the town of Mayfield and all the fun I had with friends and family that are no longer on this earth with us. Some of the things that were destroyed in that tornado are places I would go to be with the people I can no longer physically be with, and then places are gone too

as you know i reported on this tragic event a couple of times and researching those reports was a truly humbling experience not just the stories of those that lived the experience but also the accounts of the first responders and the many many people that went out of their way to chip in when all must have seemed lost. More so it was the stories of what happened next that really provided a spiritual uplift the stories of all the help, support and guidance that Kentucky demonstrated as it came together to help the affected. its fantastic to see that only one year on the strides to rebuild not only the physical structures torn apart that day but also the community that had its heart literally blown away rebuild, restock, and renew

What a beautiful tribute to the battle they have had to face over this last year rebuilding and the progress they are making. There was a tornado in Plainfield Illinois in 1990, I was 8 years old and went to help clean up, I still to this day remember the devistation that caused and how hard it was on the community. Mayfield you are in our thoughts !!!!

That's nasty. In Australia we get cyclones , remembering 1974 when 3 hit Brisbane city Queensland all at once. There were gum trees torn apart into confetti whilst others flew past down the road. Torrential rain and floods. One thing still amazes me though , why do we continue to build the same old structures with the same inherent flaws ? Stupid as it sounds a dome will hold an air pocket in flood and both wind and water will flow around them. Good story Ken , hope those folks are getting back on their feet.

As both a weather and roller coaster enthusiast, first time I went to Indiana Beach I made sure to check out the memorial for the tornado in downtown - the tornado art piece where its sucking up the clock, with the time stuck at the time it hit the town. I'm surprised someone actually mentioned Monticello in here!

Great video Ken! It's really kind of sad the rebuild efforts have been drastically hampered by city government and zoning situations. We all knew the DG would be one of the first things rebuilt. I was actually surprised it took as long as it did. It's really kind of sad how the government agencies and politicians swoop in quickly with promises but drag their feet to make anything happen. The only reason things are anywhere close normal at the airport is because of people associated with the airport stepping up to make repairs on their own.

Maybe if the people of Kentucky and the conservative right-wing government of Kentucky use some of the buildback better funds which were passed and are available for so many other states and communities they could build back much faster. But Kentucky and its people and its government are based upon stupid ignorant poor white trash conservatism
