A Tour of a FREE Craigslist Piano!

This piano is not exactly your typical "free craigslist piano". Although far from perfect, it was once a high quality piano, and has the potential to become a great instrument once again. For a piano with original strings, hammers, and action, it plays remarkably well, and its tone seems to be reasonably good! For anyone wanting an interesting restoration project, this might be a neat one!
The current owner of this instrument for 30 years is willing to give the instrument away for free, along with roughly 70 piano rolls and a case for them, but only to someone passionate about music who will give this instrument a good home. You can see the listing and contact the owner here: tricities.craigslist.org/atq/...

I troll the "free" section on Craigslist regularly. I have seen boats, as well as pristine grand pianos. Some people can't afford to move them and a loved one may have passed. They don't have use for it anymore and are extremely generous. I've seen baby grands and many organs as well. Pump reed organs that are both in disrepair and working. Antiques that are very fine indeed. Thanks for bringing this information in this video to the piano loving masses.

Oh boy, it’s really a long time ago that you reviewed a upright and now this one. Nice! A beauty. And with a bunch of rolls. I can absolutely understand that you didn’t want to tune all of them. Surely not this oldie. And you never know if one string breaks. Ouch. But regardless of that thank you for playing this beautiful instrument. Imagine someone is given this away. Must be to a piano lover. Anyway. Hope you can do this more often. Thank you for sharing and playing!

Actually, player pianos, like many mechanical musical instruments, do not work on pressure, but on vacuum. In fact, the pedals are mechanically connected to bellows, and the proper term for those bellows is 'exhausters.' Some mechanical musical instruments, like the band organs associated with carousels have a vacuum system for controlling the instrument and a pressure system to activate the organ pipes.

Hi, James! Have you tested Brazilian pianos? Essenfelder and Fritz Dobbert are the main manufacturers. Unfortunately Essenfelder manufactured the pianos in southern Brazil, but closed around the 1960s', and the new Essenfelder that reactivated production some five years ago now manufactures in China ... :( Fritz Dobbert is Brazilian and manufactures in São Paulo, Brazil.

Enjoyed the Go Pro "time lapse". It was fun. Nice case on that piano. WOW! That's really out of tune! I can imagine though that the tone would be very nice once properly tuned. The action is probably in need of TLC and the hammers as well. That piano would be a greet project for a restorer to take on. The cabinet looks very good. I do hope that it finds a good home and will receive the TLC that it is deserving of. It would be a shame for this instrument to be lost.

I love your channel, especially this episode!!!! I just wish I had time to watch every episode. I would also love to see more videos on home organs. I've picked up classical organ in the last year and want one to practice at home not just at church (a really nice Rodgers 535 ) but I cant afford much. I've found some free ones but I realize I have to find or inherit the right one,. I'm just clueless about organ companies. Allen sounds like the best. I tried out a free "Conn" vacuum tube kind but it literally died on me while I was looking at it. Plus it didn't have a full 32 note pedal board. I'm looking for organs that fit American Guild of Organists standards. Also there is a really nice YT series put out by AGO for pianists transitioning to organ. It's about 30 lessons, enough to get started. I love piano but I LOVE organ!

Hi James. Another great video! Not wishing to come across as a "know-all", for your future reference, "hydraulic" refers to fluid systems. "Pneumatic" refers to compressed air systems. 😁
@lunstee
@lunstee 2 года назад
While the piano does operate on air, it’s not compressed: it’s actually vacuum driven. Compressed air would always be pushing the paper away from the tracker bar (the bar that reads the holes in the piano roll) which would require tension on the paper. The tracker bar is self sealing under vacuum keeping things simpler. Since reading is done with a vacuum, everything else is too to avoid needing separate vacuum and pressure bellows.

Love that case, sort of an economy art nouveau look with those curved panels. I wonder, if one of the influences behind ragtime was a way of compensating for poorly tuned pianos in saloons and juke joints? Thanks for showing us what was in the cabinet. It matched so well I was wondering what it was. Too bad you couldn't have played "Elmer's Tune" I always think of it as a Glenn Millar song, and wonder if it is the same?

This video was so worth it just to hear that piece played so out of tune! Fricken hilarious. Typically when I hear a piano that is out of tune, I can't even tell, because it's uniformly out of tune and the notes still sound in tune with each other. But this! This was just crazy to hear.

hydraulic: Of, involving, moved by, or operated by a fluid, especially water under pressure. pneumatic: Run by or using compressed air. So, I suspect the player piano you reviewed is not hydraulic. :-) Thanks, as always, for an interesting review! *Question:* How long do you think a piano like that would stay in tune after every string has been twice tuned?

Great video as always! Also really enjoyed your roland fp30x video. I think ill choose the yamaha p125. How do you think these 2 compare? And a different question: do you think its necessary to be able to read sheets or can you get as good in playing by just using your ears and feelings? Lets make clear that i had no problem learning guitar by ear, was really fun! Just hate sheets
@ThePianoforever
@ThePianoforever 3 года назад
Funny you should ask that - I'm editing a video about those two (plus the ES110) right now! Coming soon... :) In regards to sheet music: although it's good to be able to read sheet music, many famous studio musicians and artists spent their entire career not knowing how to read a score - Glen Campbell, for one. If you gain very strong aural skills and extremely good perfect or relative pitch, you can learn nearly anything.

Ooh I loved the countryside! Quick question - is the action of acoustic pianos generally much more heavy than digital? I have a Yamaha digital that feels quite light and similar to a keyboard really, which is good for me because I have arthritis. The out of tune piano sounded so strange!!😀
@ThePianoforever
@ThePianoforever 3 года назад
Depends on the digital piano, and the acoustic piano, but as a whole, yes. Acoustic pianos are generally heavier, yet often more responsive, than digital piano actions. Very few digital piano actions are as heavy as an acoustic piano's action.

Interesting on two particular counts. My first ever piano bought second hand in 1946 was an Allison and Allison. Hearing you say this brought back the name even though I had forgotten it. It was not fantastic but did the job basically for quite a few years. Also I noted some years ago that if you want a well-made instrument a player piano seems to need a higher standard of construction because of the mechanical stress on it. Nowadays I just have digital pianos (with much improved action on those days) at home, primarily liking my Kawai ES110 for its realistic action and lightness to transport, but am fortunate to occasionally be booked for good installed grand pianos.

I probably should know this... but what is the difference between a square and an upright piano? And that is absolutely amazing. The minute you said player piano... I knew it was going to be good. Last one of those I played on, unfortunately I was never able to determine anything about it; I was frankly too young to care anything about the history of the instruments I played then. Was only in elementary school.
@ThePianoforever
@ThePianoforever 3 года назад
A square piano was a design made on the mid 1800's prior to the upright design. It was rectangular in design, with a similar shape to a clavichord, and was popular at the time because it took up less space than a traditional grand piano.
@Conn653
@Conn653 3 года назад
James----A couple of points for your education. A player piano does not operate with 'hydraulics' or 'air pressure'. The mechanism is operated using Vacuum. The bellows do not have 'cloth' but leather, same as a pipe organ regulator. This comes to you from a 70 year old piano/theater pipe organ player and tuner.

Air = pneumatic, oil = hydraulic. Not electronic = mechanical(acoustic.) End of Engineering lesson. That one really takes the prize for the most atrociously out of tune piano I've heard. Out here on the great plains, there's always about a half dozen free or under $100 uprights that people are trying to get rid of. Most are not players. Too bad I have no place to put one.
