Some people disagreed with me in my last video in which I mentioned that Santorini could possibly be Atlantis. So I figured I'd address that a little more here, since I mentioned it again in this video. First, I don't have an opinion on the issue either way. There's a lot of debate about where Atlantis might have been located and whether or not it even existed. Most mainstream experts on ancient history think it was just a story Plato was telling to make a point. The book is really interesting though because the author doesn't have a bias and isn't trying to prove a theory one way or another. He's just traveling around the Mediterranean talking to archaeologists and other experts on the subject, trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. He travels to Santorini and talks with some locals, some of whom are experts in Greek history and archaeology and disagree that Santorini could have been Atlantis. But the author also looks at the similarities between the volcanic eruption that occurred on Santorini, the civilization that existed here at the time and the story by Plato about the lost civilization of Atlantis. So if you're looking for something to read then I recommend grabbing a copy of the book "Meet Me in Atlantis" by Mark Adams, because it's a good travel book and you also learn a lot about the history of the entire Mediterranean region. Speaking of reading, did you know I have a travel blog? I haven't been writing on it a lot in the past five years or so since I started making videos, but I've written a few posts on there recently, including just yesterday about an interesting day of exploring on Santorini. That will be my next video. If you want to check out my blog with a few insights into the traveling experience beyond the videos then here it is: gabejedmo.blogspot.com/

Mario Michaelides, yes I went to Rhodes in 2009, didn't really care for it. I don't usually like the larger islands with big towns that feel like the mainland. And I wasn't impressed by the beaches I went to. I only saw part of it, maybe there are nicer parts of the island. Craig, I think that's an interesting idea and who knows maybe there could be something to it. A perfect civilization that was destroyed because they fell from grace essentially.

yes !! before I came here I just finished making a video about atlantis as Santorini, it was proposed to be so in the past but new research seems to confirm the possibility the one main clue of plato's that doesn't add up is its location beyond the pillars of Hercules aka strait of Gibraltar….orichalcum ingots found near Sicily seem to indicate that this was the Atlantean trade route/ empire for more check out my channel thanks ,,...the richat is an after thought proposed by respectable yet speculative researchers....

frescoes depicting a fleet of ships, potsherds, plant materials...living quarters...the stones of color mentioned by plato...only thing that doesn't add up is the the archaeologist in question doesn't address the issue of the location in relation to the pillars of Hercules ,,...but transcribing can get messed up after hundreds of years...

I remember when I first visited Santorini back in summer 1990. I was 32 then. I met a company there and we had a perfect holiday. In the night I used to go to a bar in Fira, drink a cocktail and listen to Kitaro's ambient music in the dark, looking at the black caldera lighted only by the moonlight. Gorgeous then but now it's overrun by tourism.
@tyxeri48
@tyxeri48 6 лет назад
It was overrun by tourists back then also. In 1984 when I went for the first time and I was 22 it was also overrun by tourists. I remember the tavernas with the rude owners and the lanes packed with people. But we were young and we had the hell of a time...

Yes there were also many tourists back then but there weren't so many cruise ships visiting the island. Now, the cruise ships alone debark thousands of people almost every day!

The girl you seeing attempting to play an accordion at 13:12 is most likely not a Greek, but a Romani (gypsy). This is a type of child trafficking to make money on begging. The Greek authorities should be taking action, but clearly they don't. Adults begging is one thing, but children begging is a very serious social issue.

Hi Gabriel, It is definitely your picture post card type of place very romantic as well as touristy. The Greek food is very under rated and feta cheese has a bit funky smell like many cheeses but it taste very good. The Islands are very inviting and relaxing making it a very attractive traveling destination.

Visited Santorini as a stepping stone to Anafi, Milos and Kimolos. I couldn't believe the amount of development that has taken place in the last two years. The vast number of tourists in early May wasn't what we expected. Hated it. Anafi and Kimolos were so quiet and peaceful.

Expensive, crowded, and touristy, but I understand why: the views are magnificent. I much preferred the vibe of Anafi, though. There were just WAY too many folks around on Santorini in the main areas of town. Still, the history is interesting re: the eruption. I haven’t visited your blog in ages! Good to know you’re still writing there. I’ll have to check it out again later! Peace! ✌🏼👍🏼

I've heard the Santorini Atlantis theory but the most compelling one I've found is that it's the Richat structure in the West African Sahara whose concentric circles match and measure up to Plato's descriptions. Keep in mind destruction happened 11k years ago, and that sand from that region was from ocean bottom after flood catastrophe, I find that location idea vs Cuba, Portugal or Santorini to name a few.
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 6 лет назад
Yes he discusses that location in the book as well. He visits many different places that are considered potential sites of Atlantis including Spain, Malta and others.

Hi Gabriel, thank you for all these great videos. I discovered your channel this summer and now I'm addicted to it. However, there is something I find slightly annoying : on some videos (like this one) you are using a cam with a fish eye lens (it must be a go pro or something) and I really can't get used to it. There must be other people who feel the same... so would you please consider filming your new videos with a normal lens ? Thank you
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 6 лет назад
Hi there, glad you're enjoying the videos. I'm filming all my videos with the GoPro Hero 6, which has different angles you can choose. Normally I use the "linear" mode which doesn't have the fish eye effect. However for certain situations I switch to the wide angle because it captures more of what's going on around you. So for this video I decided to film in wide angle because that view of the crater has so much to see. And also in the wide angle mode you can capture things and people without having to point the camera directly at them, because it gets more of what's going on at the edge of the camera. So for some filming situations I'll switch over to the wide angle so that it gets more of what's going on around you. What don't you like about it, does the image get distorted?
@brunodelovegny
@brunodelovegny 6 лет назад
Stuff like buildings, train stations, churches, trees, etc... tend to look bended which is a bit weird for me, maybe because I'm not a fish ;) . Anyway, it's only a minor problem, this is a wonderful channel and after reading your fast and very well argumented reply, I'm convinced you probably make the best filming decisions !

@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 6 лет назад
The GoPro doesn't have an input for an external mic. Apparently there might be some way to do it still, but I'm not sure how. And I want to keep it simple and not have extra wires and mics to deal with. I like being able to just stuff the camera in my pocket and then grab it when I want to start filming. I use the "wind only" setting which does a pretty good job of filtering out the wind noise. Usually it's only an issue when the wind is pretty intense, like it was in this video.

Yeah mostly tourists, from all over the world. You hear all kinds of different languages and accents. Lots of Americans, British, Europeans but also you see people who look to be from other parts of the world. Santorini is one of the most visited islands of Greece and especially attracts people coming to Greece for the first time who probably haven't heard about many of the other islands, but have seen the pictures of Santorini.

Lots of tourists but for a place like that more tourists means more excitement and fun and energy. It would be boring as shit if it was a ghost town. As you travel alone it at least gives lone travelers the opportunity to meet and hook up with others. Are a lot of these people day trippers from a cruise ship or are they staying overnight.?
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 6 лет назад
I'm sure some are from cruise ships but I don't think a majority of them. Fira is the central town of Santorini and so wherever you go on the island you end up having to go through there. It's the capital and main town so has the best services, and also of course has epic views. And there are a lot of guest houses and hotels there so a lot of people stay there. Other towns around Santorini are less crowded. Except Ia, which is even more crowded, you'll see it in the next video.

@@Pan472 There is no reasons why he would lie. Anyway, maybe I.m blind but I can,t see why people can have any interest into going to Greece outside millionaires with private boats. Can't even see a single tree to hang myself because I would be so bored. A place as boring would be Peru coast line in off season.

@@konstance7087 There are such views and sunsets all around the Aegean. I'm Greek and I can tell. The only unique thing in Santorini is the volcano (not even that! There's Nisyros too...)

There are much better islands in Greece to go. They abuse the donkeys there, what a shame. If people stop going they would learn their lesson.

The Romans wrote history and the Greeks wrote fables. Then just as now, the Romans are far superior lol.

So, why did the Romans copy a lot from the Greeks? The Eastern Roman empire also spoke Greek.
@Pan472
@Pan472 6 лет назад
Imperatore7777 You do know that Greek civilization preceded Roman civilisation? Or you're here just to troll? Romans were influenced heavily by Greeks, especially in vocabulary, alphabet, philosophy and architecture. Romans did many things on their own and made Roman civilisation, one of the two great civilisations (the other one being Greece) that made Western Civilisation. But that does not mean you have to take all the credit! Greeks contributed a lot, and influenced Romans and the rest of Europeans a lot also. The Romans also influenced Europe. Both of us influenced the world.
