Went to Juneau in summer of 2015 and it was pretty dead in the evenings too. One explanation are the giant cruise ships that dock in Juneau and allow passengers to shop/eat/drink during daytime but the ship leaves in the early evening with its thousands of passengers. Of course, that’s all pre-COVID and many cruise ships to Alaska may not be operating.
You walked past my great grandparents , my grandparents and my mothers home. As well as many friends houses. Havent lived in Juneau for 40 yrs. Great nostalgia. Thanks
You really are the master of picking the right soundtrack, whatever the situation or environment, I just find it so spot on and evocative, every single time, it really adds something to your videos ... perhaps your decent taste in music helps. If you give this up you should definitely curate documentary & movie scores 👍🏾
Had to laugh at the animal tracks comment. That was a dog, not a bear. Bears are all asleep in February in Juneau. But it's fun seeing other people's excitement when they walk around my neighborhood.
I live in the Oregon forest in Oregon off the coast it’s beautiful but this is breathtaking! I heard Alaska was so amazing I’ve been to Juneau but it’s been a really long time I want to come back to Alaska probably three or four trips I think because there’s so much to say thank you for this great walking tour it was amazing!
Juneau looks like a pretty chill place. Hopefully you had a chance to meet more 'talkative' locals on camera, lol. Also, the Aleut internment during WWII was something new to me. Pretty tragic.
That is true. Many people on their mid late 40s don’t even have much hair on their heads. Fortunately for me and Gabriel, we have lucky genes that allows us to have hair past 40
I was always wondering how old you were, and it took a chance encounter with a Juneau local to get a gauge on your age. Damn. I thought you were significantly younger.
Trying to figure out where else I can go, problem is there are interstate travel restrictions. Most of the smaller communities require quarantine even if you're coming from somewhere else in Alaska.
I lived in Inuvik for two winters, the ravens are so big. Worked out on the Beaufort Sea. Today in Alberta it is -39 and was the temp always in Inuvik!
Well I am sure I am not the only person to say it but here it goes any way! Alaska looks WAAAY different from the stereotypes I have seen of it in Movies and shows on TV! I thought it was rustic cabins and basic ugly trailers and wood shed type structures like in Antarctica! Just basic.. You know, to protect against the 24/7 winters that never end? Like in 30 days of night horror movies lol! I am WOWed! This place has architecture like in MAINE! So pretty and a mix of modern and old and some basic rustic. What a total surprise! If it wasnt for the pandemic I would visit Alaska now that I know it is not just sparse military type/worker camp type basic trailer communities, and rustic cabins in the woods(I love those though btw lol). It looks like Maine! I do not think I could swim the clear streams and lakes and rivers like I have dreamed though.. seems it is cold year round right? I am from Puerto Rico where the sun is most of the time out and the waters are warm(beaches), and crisp cool(streams and rivers) and the air is a cool breeze mixed with heat.. Total opposite of Alaska lol! I had an ex-girlfriend/hook up that moved from FLA USA to ALASKA and I always pictured here living up there in a rustic cabin with no water or electric and just her dogs and herself and lots of snow and woods.. Not me.. To visit and then come back to the warm and sun, ok.. But this here town?! This is like what Brunswick Maine looks like! Nice!! Yeah.. I am a military brat, so that is how I know Maine, being from Puerto Rico.. Alaska.. I need to see more Alaska, this is not the arctic wasteland/Pretty woods with rustic life I was expecting!!
Maaan, so snowy and amazingly beautiful! I am going to Ukraine next and I really really hope I will see the same amount of snow there. Would make the videos even nicer. Cheers, mate, enjoy your time there!
Yeah I totally missed it while talking to the camera, noticed it while editing of course. Not that anyone would have minded with the house already obliterated.
Hi Gabriel, Alaska one of the last land frontiers on earth. The book that was written by Jack London Call of the Wild describes the harsh environment that is Alaska beautiful and majestic, wild and untamed in these modern times Alaska is known for another gold rush in the form of oil.
A blessed good sir Gabe Wowwww what a nice.beautoful Cold place of juneu alaska my dream travel destination thank u sir Gabe for your nice excellent walk around tour keep safe Godbless from the philippines 🇵🇭 sir Vhin 🙏🙂
Exactly what I was looking for! I had been to Juneau in the summertime and wondered how it fared in the winter compared to the more northern Alaskan cities.
That's interesting. In highschool I read a very good classic book about a recruited young female teacher in Fairbanks around the 1900's. She had a very good description of the remote life back then. Wish I could remember the name of it. Maybe you heard of it?
The Driftwood. I couldn’t remember the name of the place I stayed at until seeing your video. Convenient because of the shuttle and I stayed there when changing Ferrys to the MV Kennicott to Whittier.
Didn't know Juneau was 2nd biggest city by land. I had heard Jacksonville, FL was the biggest, but looked it up on wikipedia and it's actually Sitka, AK, Juneau 2nd, and actually Alaska has the top 4 sized cities in the country.
Great video as always. Lived there for years. Rained 30 days in a row one fall! And prices are “slightly” higher in the summer. Other than driving rain and high cost of living great place for boating and fishing-)
Gabe! love your videos, I have been watching your stuff since internet. Its amazing to see the world through your eyes, You don't BS, no yummy face, its real and sincere. Thank you! and hopefully your channel will get more well deserved attention. Thumbs up to you and hope to see you keep'on traveling. I am stuck in the cold, so videos of you in the tropics really helped my psyche.
Juneau is definitely worth a visit and if you are not planning on returning to Alaska, combining Juneau with Anchorage, Denali and Seward could be a good use of your time. ... Cordova is closer to Anchorage than Juneau, but definitely "off the beaten path" since you must fly or take the ferry there.
YUP! We love Gabriel Traveler's private & simply travel videos without too much commercial. I used it on My Virtual Program, I worked with Differing Disability Adults. They Love it!! Peace from Upper Marlboro, MD
Hey, I’m from Willits, going to community college in Ukiah, and am considering those two colleges! Kinda cool to hear you had that experience some time back. Love the videos :)
I was a lost and hopeless kid from a family with no money at all. I had to get out of where I was from or I would have died. I found UAS, I was a student there from 2005-2006. I haven't been back since and I may never return but that year changed everything. This video brought tears to my eyes from all the memories. Is Deharts still there?
Wait - so the capital of the biggest state is only 1/3 of the population of my little hometown, yet the 2nd largest in the USA by area?! I'll be danged!
Starting to wonder if we may have crossed paths before in Alaska. Hitch hiked the Alcan- Highway first time at age seventeen in 1974 from Seattle to northern Alaska.
I guess it's possible. I hitchhiked from Haines to interior Alaska twice, in 1992 and 1995. Lived in Fairbanks 1990-91, Juneau 1991-92, worked in Denali summers of 91, 92, 95, 2017.
I was living in Juneau in the spring-summer of 1983, then again from 1989-1993, working near your college at the Auk Bay Lab. Me and my wife lived downtown. Its fun to see all our old streets. That road he sent you on, is colloquially known as "Gold Creek." I used to go up there for cross-country skiing, until I was told it was an extreme avalanche danger. Its surprising how little has changed there.
Realized that while editing. Sometimes you miss things while talking to a camera. I thought the stairs were another public access staircase, since you couldn't see a house.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos O-K I understand. But sometimes it could be for your safety or private prop. I have a couple on my property is the reason I responded. I do enjoy you work dude. Travel on.
Rules and laws are optional in Juneau. We operate by the "common sense" principle, meaning, "Eh, if you're not hurting anyone, no one's going to say anything."
I love Juneau. Put my car on the ferry in Haines Ak and went to Juneau 8 years ago in the winter. Had a blast. Hope you get a chance to show the glacier.
Beautiful day there. Never been to Juneau, but Anchorage twice, many yrs ago. Stay safe and watch for that slippery ice. You fall so fast, impossible to catch yourself. 🏥🏥
More videos!!!!!! More stories!!!!!!! Keep making videos and talking about stories you've lived!!! Please speak about your time spent in Europe!! Love you GABRIEL been watching you for way over a year!!
Beautiful place backed by a beautiful video - maybe it's because I grew up in a place without it but I can't get enough of seeing (and being in) places where it snows, I love it. Thanks for opening my eyes to Aleutians too, never heard of them before.
Heyyy I’m from Juneau it’s crazy this popped up you should go to ice caves this is the only time of year you can go in them or eagle creast lots of cool stuff you can do their
I’m only a year or two younger than you. I graduated high school in 1991. I’m from Hawaii, but I lived in Anchorage in 1982, then Fairbanks in 1983, 84, 85. We moved back to Hawaii in 1986. I graduated high school in 1991 and ended up in Colorado for college. My sister and brother lived in Juneau almost all their lives. I hope to move back to Alaska someday.
Used to live in Juneau for 21 years don't miss the snow and usely clear like that your going to get the Taku winds blowing down town and basin road. The old driftwood lodge I see they must have closed the store in the small building across the parking lot from the driftwood. Juneau Douglas high class 85
Hello I’m a local from juneau, could you shout us out in your next vlog? I don’t have as many subs as you but this summer me and my group of friends are gonna start blogging again, check out our video.
Hearing you say Chris' name sent shivers down my spine, then I teared up. I would have never guessed that there would any kind of connection like that between you two, even though you do actually remind me of him in some ways and maybe that's why I enjoy your content so much. Wow. Absolutely cannot wait to hear your story. Also, thank you for showing me recent footage of Alaska and Juneau especially. It's one of those places I haven't been able to visit, but it's been calling my name for years. Thank you once again.
