I just finished watching some of your videos including the on e on your green house. Honestly I found them very useful. I went into snail business about April last year with a green measuring 50ft x 100ft. We grew a very dense vegetation and stocked with 3000 AM. Few months after, wind blew off the roof and the net was torn all over. Then caterpillars came and invaded the vegetation and within 2 weeks we lost the vegetation. I have replaced the net, removed all the invested vegetation and fumigated the farm. So I had the same experience you had with caterpillars but I need to learn more from you about the biological rather than the chemical approach you adopted in dealing with your own case. Where I really need your assistance are: 1. The Net : With the nets they used ( 1st was 60% and 2nd was 80%) green house was very hot, infact hotter than the outside. They also tore or degraded easily. 2. Feed formula 3. Management of hatchlings to reduce mortality

I always recommend 50% UV shade net because it strikes a balance between whats good for the plants and the snails. If you have a dwarf fence greenhouse, there should be sufficient ventilation/air flow. If you have a full fence greenhouse, ventilation will be restricted and you have to find other ways to improve air flow. With a full fence greenhouse, the last thing you need is a high concentration shade net I already have a video on snail feed preparation and formula With regards to incubation of snail eggs, the crucial factor is maintaining optimal humidity and using the right kind of soil..sandy laom. The soil shouldn't be too compact or loose and you need to mulch the place so moisture is retained

Bro, i greet you and congratulations for a job well done. Keep it up. I kindly have 3 questions: In which state is your farm located? What's the profit margin for a farm of that capacity? Can you say you feel comfortable conducting a rigorous 2 weeks training someone?
@zenaksnailfarm
@zenaksnailfarm Год назад
Thanks bro. My farm is located in Enugu state. I can't report on the profit margin yet because I completed construction last year october and stocked it a month later ie November...what i have currently is mostly point of lay parent stock so I'm not yet in a position to sell Once I make a sale and I can speak about the margin from personal experience I'll definitely make a video about it. All I can say now is that cost of feeding isn't much, cost of water is zero cuz of my harvested rain water and cost of electricity is zero because I have solar. So my expense is very low which will help in producing a large profit margin..the other variable im not yet sure of is cost of fuel to deliver stuff to customers On site training is something I'll get into in the future but I don't have the logistics for it presently because its just me for now handling everything in the farm...Once I have workers and some free time ill branch out to that

Thank you for this super informative video! Its not just a snail greenhouse..its a garden as well. Do you get insect pests that can come from underground like ants? and how do you control them? When I start mine, I think they could be the main problem.
@zenaksnailfarm
@zenaksnailfarm Год назад
Thanks John Given the way the snail greenhouse is designed its near impossible to prevents ants from gaining access. Prior to stocking you can treat the soil to kill as many pests as possible but after stocking the use of chemicals is not encouraged. That being said, the majority of ants don't pose a problem for snails...only perhaps the solder ants which I've seldom seen in my greenhouse. As long as you do weekly clean up to remove rotten food or dead snails etc..anything with foul odour that can attract these ants, you should be fine.

Please why is your hollow blocks facing the footpath instead of facing the vegetation where the snails live.? Will the snails have to crawl over the blocks every day to side and crawl back at night ?
@zenaksnailfarm
@zenaksnailfarm Год назад
The reason I placed the blocks horizontal on the ground is to maximize shading (limit direct exposure to sunlight), limit exposure to dry harmattan wind and increase stocking density. The bulk of the snails live in the area with vegetation and hide under the mulch/leaves/cover crops etc. However, some of them like to come down from time to time to hide in the shade blocks. They know their way around and with their keen sense of smell they can easily locate the vegetation (if that's what they feel like eating). I also keep some snail feeders on the walkway to supplement their diet

Is there a reason why you used shower heads instead of sprinkler heads for the irrigation? Your farms looks very well built but man, that's a lot of space you've given up. Were you able to determine the source of the caterpillar? Wish you success on your venture
@zenaksnailfarm
@zenaksnailfarm Год назад
Thanks Khabib With regards to the sprinklers - I just didn't like them. Felt ill be wasting a lot of water with the sprinklers jetting them all over the place..I wanted something a bit more targeted.. something that'll water just the area the plants are in..not the walkways. Initially I wanted to limit the size of the walkway to about 2ft (the size of my pen house walkway), but I realised I will need my wheelbarrow for the occasional maintenance (planting, applying manue, prunning etc..anything that'll require me to carry stuff around..would be easier to carry those things around in my wheelbarrow)...this made me expand it to about 4ft I have no idea how the caterpillar got in but i noticed they loved laying eggs under the cocoyam leaves. The eggs will then hatch and start feeding on the vegetation..they caused absolute havoc just as dry season was about to start. Getting a rooster helped keep them in check All in all, I just wanted a high quality greenhouse so I built it myself
@khabib4929
@khabib4929 Год назад
@@zenaksnailfarm Sorry for the caterpillar invasion, Im glad you're able to get it resolved. Rooster idea is very smart, quickest and sure way of dealing with these smaller pests. If you want something done and done well its better to do it yourself especially if you're handy. I built my greenhouse myself as well. Drop your email I will send you photos later. Also there are sprinkler heads that are target specific, look into that plus the misting heads I suggested on your other vid. It took me almost a year researching best materials prior to my construction

What is a rough estimate for doing about 1 acre of land from your experience Sir?
@zenaksnailfarm
@zenaksnailfarm Год назад
My entire farm is about an acre...but I built just one greenhouse which sits on a plot of land (100ft x 50ft). The way I built my greenhouse is a bit of an exception from the industry norm (I wanted to do it myself to be sure of the quality and also to make accurate adjustments given the kind of land I have) so its quite on the expensive side...it cost me about N3.7m to build the greenhouse alone. Now building a greenhouse on an acre of land (6 plots) might cost in the region of N6m to N12m depending on the quality of materials used, ur ability to negotiate your workers pay, the season you build it (GI rods, sprinklers shade net, cost of labour, cement etc building materials tend to be cheaper during rainy season). This is if you want to build yourself If you want to outsource it...just make sure you can supervise things to ensure quality isn't compromised

Are you yet to introduce your snails?? How many snails can your greenhouse house?? When you were hit but the pests were they any casualties?? And what chemicals were being used to control the pest?
@zenaksnailfarm
@zenaksnailfarm Год назад
Yes. I started with 1000 snails. My greenhouse can comfortably house about 30,000 snails. I did not use any chemical to address the situation as it could have adverse effect on the snails. Instead, I went for a biological approach by purchasing a rooster..it fed on the cutworms and helped keep it under control. The cutworms didn't affect the snails directly. They only affected them indirectly by eating a lot of the vegetation.
@margaretbrown2650
@margaretbrown2650 Год назад
Did the rooster not damage any snail eggs in the greenhouse?
@zenaksnailfarm
@zenaksnailfarm Год назад
@@margaretbrown2650 none that I noticed. But, its to be expected that there would be some kind of collateral damage to the eggs...its just better than using chemicals to get rid of the cutworms. This would be a lot worse
@johnablorh2186
@johnablorh2186 Год назад
Can you tell me how many snails you have approx in your greenhouse?
@zenaksnailfarm
@zenaksnailfarm Год назад
I started with 1000...a few hundred eggs have been laid so far and a good number of them hatched to baby snails so I can't say exactly how many is in there at the moment but it should be less than 2000 considering I stocked not too long ago in Nov 2022. Mind you this is AM and they dont lay as many eggs as AA or AF...the average in my farm is about 6 eggs per clutch (based on the ones I've seen e.g laid on the soil surface, inside the shade blocks or walkway). The once the snails managed to lay under the soil are unknown to me
@johnablorh2186
@johnablorh2186 Год назад
And how many do you harvest on a monthly basis?
@zenaksnailfarm
@zenaksnailfarm Год назад
My farm hasn't gotten to the stage of harvesting. I'll need to run this current cycle for atleast 18 months before I can start harvesting to sell. What I have now are point of lay breeders that are currently laying eggs and kids hatching. The kids will need to mature fully and begin to lay their own eggs..provide POL replacement for the next cycle b4 I can consider selling to clients
