A TRADITONAL GERMAN CHRISTMAS: DECORATIONS & SWEETS YOU NEED// Hello everyone, We're slowly getting into the festive mood so Joerg and I thought we would share some new additions that we got for our traditional German Christmas 2021 here in the UK. I just returned from Germany and brought home some lovely baubles and decoration from beautiful brands in the Ore Mountains that have a huge tradition when it comes to German Christmas decor. We share what makes Christmas special for us, what we think belongs to a traditional German Christmas and what sweets you need in your house. Hope you like the video.xx
ADDITION: Lauscha is actually in Thuringia whereas the Ore Mountains are in the region of Saxony Germany. We had a hard time with the camera set-up for this video and were so happy that we managed to film this episode in the end. Both Joerg and I were quite exhausted and unfortunately made this mistake.

Tradition for me is hanging all my grandparents' Christmas stuff on the Christmas tree. Like you, I like a traditional tree and the Christmas balls I have are very old, but I wouldn't trade them for anything. They bring back so many nice memories. The figurines for the nativity scene belong to my mom. I occasionally buy old Christmas balls that I find at flea markets or drift stores.

I have many ornaments and figurines that were my parents or that my parents gave me. They will always have a special place on our tree or placed around our home at Christmas. I cherish them. We have many beautiful German ornaments as our daughter worked in Germany for a couple years.

50 years ago my husband and I were too poor to afford expensive ornaments for the tree, so we bought wooden ones and painted them ourselves. They are on our tree every year. We still love them and so do the grandkids.

What gorgeous ornaments. We always have a multi colored tree, lights and ornaments. When our boys were young, we had two trees, a real one that we cut down, for our dinning room and an artificial one for our living room. For our real one, we would make our ornaments, colored paper chains, and home made cookies to hang on the tree. Most years, we had as is called here a Charlie Brown tree. Not a perfectly shaped tree and with holes within the branches. It would get decorated and it was beautiful to us.

Thank you! There is nothing more magical or whimsical than a traditional German Christmas! We celebrate Yule on the Winter Solstice. In addition to handmade blown glass and wooden ornaments, our house (inside and out) is decorated with natural cedar bough greenery, wreaths, pine cones and acorns, mistletoe, holly and ivy. On the actual Solstice, we have no sources of artificial light, only candles, and real wood fires. Everything is handmade, and hand-decorated, including the food, sweets, and gifts. Each year, one special ornament is added to the tree. I still have several magnificent decorations from my childhood Christmas' in Germany.

Yes, my family here in Germany (Lower Saxony) decorates with lots of wooden art from the Erzgebirge: Pyramids, Schibbögen/candle archs in nearly every window, nutcrackers, smokers, miners and angels and the musical box which plays silent night. And of course we have a self-bound Advent wreath with four bee wax candles. A huge (villeroy&boch :-)) christmas plate has a place in the living room with Lebkuchen, Dominosteinen, Spekulatius, mazipan and lots of christmas cookies in many shapes baked and decorated by the children. The christmas tree we fell in the forrest and it gets red or white glasballs from Lauscha, straw stars and some Erzgebirge miniature hangers, but isn't too colorful. Outside the house we have the big Herrnhuter star. Now I am in a christmas mood. Thanks for your wonderful videos!

There are a lot of the German Christmas goodies that I have been introduced to and are hard to stop eating! One of the things I remember as a child was my grandmother’s Christmas tree that had Bubble Lights. For those who haven’t seen these ,they resemble a string of glass candles with a coloured liquid that bubbles when the bulb warms the liquid up. They are still available today and gives the tree a retro look Take care and happy tree decorating 🇨🇦 ❤️

We had a pyramid when I was a kid, it was mesmerizing. There's a huge garden center near where I grew up, I told my brother I wanted to go next time I'm visiting, they have trees decorated with ornaments from around the world, I'm hoping I can find some nice ones like yours, as well as hoping Aldi having some of those treats =^)

Being of French Canadian heritage, one big tradition is Tourtierre (traditional pork/beef pie) for Christmas breakfast. I've been vegetarian for quite some time so it'll be made with Impossible burger here at my place. I also love bubble lights. We had a small tabletop tree with bubble lights when I was a child and I loved it. Now, I have a few bubble light nightlights that I plug into the kitchen outlets at Christmas. Your decorations are so beautiful. I have a small pyramid, bought it years and years ago.

love this! growing up, a lot of our christmas traditions were influenced by the german and norwegian ancestry on my mom’s side. due to covid, last year was the first one i wasn’t with my family for the holidays. so i made my own sauerbraten and lefse (norwegian flatbread). the decorations you showed look so similar to the ones i inherited from my grandparents. there’s a scandinavian version of the pyramid you showed, but it’s made from metal and makes a tinkling sound as it rotates! love how much different cultures share traditions. thank you for the lovely video! 💕

You’ve got me excited now for Christmas! I usually wait until after Thanksgiving since I’m American but I may not be able to. I still have my smoker from the early 80’s in Germany! Sadly our pyramid didn’t make it after a few years as the replacement candles were too tall and the paddles caught fire! I always say I’ll order another one and always forget. I love that you don’t do theme trees! We just have a huge collection of lifetime memories. My kids school crafted ornaments over the years, family heirlooms, and ornaments from most every place I’ve ever visited. I love it. As for holiday sweets and treats…Don’t even get me started! Lol! My husband and I lived in very rural country for 30 years. We bought 35 acres, all wooded, except for an area we cleared for our homesite. Every year, beginning in Fall, we would go out daily, hiking and exploring, just to be enjoying the beauty of seasons. We collected hickory nuts, walnuts, pinecones, and dried thistles, seedpods, and thin, curly twig branches. We put the nuts in wooden bowls, with nutcrackers nearby. I would use paint spray to turn thistles gold or silver, the pinecones snowy white, the seed pods left their softly faded, natural colors. The curly twigs were sprayed with a light dusting of glittery soft white, as if ice was on it. We waited until Dec. 1st, to cut or find windblown evergreen branches laying in the snow. I brought them inside to be made into swags and wreaths, adding pinecones, seed pods and a big plaid bow. We had planted holly bushes around our home, so I did vases and swags of evergreen and holly, also tucking in the golden thistle and the curly frosted twigs. The live wreaths hung inside and outside our front door. Swags of holly and evergreen that I wired on a rope, draped all along our farmhouse front porch. Small vertical swags hung down inside, within each window,, while a cranberry red wax (battery) slender pillar candle in a tall wooden holder sat on upper windowsill. I used "snow spray" to frost the window at edges. It was so cozy and welcoming. I am a widow now, and moved into a town neighborhood. But I have holly bushes and two evergreen trees ...around my home. I still decorate in this old fashion way....

My childhood Christmas was different from my adulthood. Counting me there were nine children. We may not had a lot but we knew we were loved! As an adult, I collect nutcracker dolls. I do not do the Christmas tree. I instead decorate with nutcracker dolls and religious figurines. I live in Arizona, USA and our weather is warm throughout the year. I grew up in a snowbelt and do not miss the snow. 😊

On my goodness your beautiful ornaments are just enchanting! I have been collecting old glass ornaments for many years and probably have some of the Krebs ornaments. If you are familiar with the Christopher Radio brand he purchased many of the old glass molds and recreated the old glass traditional ornaments. I have many many of those as well as the old Shiny Brite ones. A tree full of all the sparkling glass is just .......heavenly. I'm so happy there are people out there that still treasure the old traditional says of decorating for Christmas. Such beautiful memories. Thank you both for always sharing with us. You are a treasure!

Three of my four grandparents immigrated from Germany to America. One tradition they all had was the placement of a 'green pickle' ornament in the tree. The first kid to find it got a special treat (like some ribbon Christmas candy or a packet of all-sorts licorice.
