One of the most powerful moments in not only Sabaton history but music history was live at Woodstock 2012 in Poland when Sabaton sang the song 40:1 which is about the battle of Wizna in which about 900 Polish troops for 3 days held off more than 40,000 Germans. The Polish knew they were going to lose but they also knew they were not going to go out without a fight. In three days of fighting they were wiped out with reports stating that only 70 men survived to become POWs. At the end of this song the crowd starts singing the Polish National Anthem it is a wonderful thing to watch.

This song really is one of their best, and anyone that says they (Sabaton) glorify war should listen to this once more. And the swedish original text is sooo much better than the english encapsulated lyrics. Example: Translation: " .... die for you homeland... " In swedish we have at least three levels of the word "homeland". Hemland which is equivalent to homeland, Fädernesland = Land of our fathers, Fosterland = land outof whose womb we come... They chose to use the last, which is of course not coincidence. There is also the translation made by Sabaton into an english version. Which is good but does not reach the same level. But I love your reaction. Thank you!

I should note that the English translations are from a different perspective. The Swedish versions are told from the pov of a Swedish soldier, while the English ones are told from the outside looking in.

If sabaton asks the crowd, no matter where in the world, if they want the english or swedish version of this song, it is ALWAYS the swedish one, and most of the crowd sings along in swedish! :D I have been to their own festival, sabaton open air 5 times, seen people from all over the world sing along this song in swedish, everyone can feel patriotic to their own country from this song, it is just absolutely amazing! Metal festivals and community are just the best! \m/

This is from the album Carolus Rex, a double album with songs in Swedish and English. All songs but two are translated verbatim from Swedish to English. The two songs that have a different lyric in English is this one and the song 1648. The Swedish version you're listening to is the view of a Swedish soldier in the war, the English version is more an outsiders view of the whole war. The song 1648 is about the Swedish siege of Prague at the end of the war. The Swedish version is, once again, from a Swedish point of view, while the English version is from the point of View of the people of Prague. The war had come full circle by then. It started in Prague 1618, and ended in Prague 1648.

Fun Fact: The swedish version you already know is about a young man, drafted to serve (and propably die) in the 30 years war for Sweden. The english version has a totally different text and message. Its more against every war ever fought

This song is about the Thirty Years' War that dominated central Europe in the 17th century (1618-1648). To this day it is one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, with the death toll falling between 4 million and 8 million. Many of the fatalities were not even from active warfare, but famine and disease also plagued the area, upping the casualties that much more. Casualties reached such a high number that many Swedish men were forced to fight when they had barely reached manhood, and sometimes even before then. Which really makes the title of the song ("A Lifetime of War" in English) hit a little harder. Men basically spent their entire lives at war, no chance for a peaceful life. The was about the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and at some point during the war almost every major player/Country in Europe was a part of it. This Swedish version of the song tells the story from a Swedish soldier's point of view. You should also check out the English version; it is not a direct translation from the Swedish, but it rather tells the story of the war from the perspective of the outside people, those not involved directly in the war but were affected by it. The lyrics hits hard, but it also shows that even when times change, new technology comes, one thing remains constant and that is the horrors of the war, both those who fall in it and those who survive and have to live with nightmare every day (ptsd).

A little information about Sabaton and the song En Livstid i Krig. Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band from Falun, which was formed in 1999. The band's songs are inspired by various historical wars. Even the band name is military inspired, as Sabaton is also the name of the part of the armor that covers the foot. The song En livstid i Kirig in this case is about the 30-year war that Sweden was involved in and at that time ruled over all of Europe and part of the Middle East. But the song still fits today, partly for everyone who participates in Kiriget in Ukraine, those who were in Dessert Storm and then those who were in Afghanistan.

I agree , it is good. BUT poetic nuances are lost. And that happens when you translate poetry. The abovementioned Fosterland vs Hemland is an example. Another: "Kriget, det kan förgöra en man" translated as "The war, it can destroy a man". Destroy is Swedish is "förstöra", but Sabaton uses "förgöra" which more has the meaning of "un-make" clearly harder than förstöra anyway. There are many examples like this. Small things but they DO make up the poetry.

Sweden has had universal conscription (w/.an exception of 2010-2017, iirc). Regardless of their individual experience while a conscript, it does give the population there some level of visibility of the plight of the soldier. In concert, Sabaton taps into that, big time. In the US, these songs get frequently get misinterpreted as something to tie an ideology to, or to wave a flag about. I'm not sure that's what Joakim, Tommy, Hanz and the others are all about when they begin to write. Anyway, this song is beautiful.

I really really love the way you approach reaction. Honestly interesting in what the artists have to say and feeling the music. So intense. Please do more. And one little suggestion on the side: if you like to here one of the most talented hard working musicians I know, please check out Tommy Johansson. Ok, you already found this gem (in so many ways), May I suggest some more songs? Do you remember the 50s Western Movie Star Audie Murphy? Check out the original video of "To Hell and back" This is his story before he became a Movie Star. Another one? "82nd all the way" is the story of a man, in some ways very similar to Audie´s, but a generation before in WWI. And a last one, that is so way out of what we would expect, i really recommend to read something about it or watch Sabatons History Chanel, because it sounds like a cheap 70s B-Movie..."The last battle" Oh i forgot "Soldier of heaven", a nice 80s vibe Song, it needs some research as well ;) 👍 i like your channel, you got a new subscriber

During the period of the 30 years war when Sweden were at war with several of their neighbours the King needed men badly. The King ordered ”a tenth” meaning a tenth of the population of every village were forced to go to war. All male from 13-50 could be picked for such duty. This is what this song is telling you about.

Sabaton recorded this in Swedish and English, but the lyrics are different. The English version is a more generic look at the Thirty Years War, while the Swedish version is a highly personal look at the life of one soldier, from his enlistment at a young age until his death in battle. Anyone not moved by these lyrics is dead inside. This is why I love Sabaton, they bring to life the true stories of heroism, sacrifice, honor, and humanity shown in the absolute devastation of war. Great reaction, subbed for the journey, keep rocking metal.

But please, for everything holy and unholy and everything in between, turn off the the automute function on your microphone, it destroys the song when it mutes like that even when you just hum. As you have it it's worse than if you pause all the time, it's even worse than if you just has the song at a constant volume and your microphone on a higher volume speaking over the song. Please?
