Great stories Sir, thank you so much for sharing them with us. Loved the part when you were crawling around opening boxes, and boxes of great drums. Awesome back drop with all the classic kits sitting behind you. Especially the Orange Sparkle Ludwig drums. What sizes are with the kit??

thanks for those memories. Your stories about Charlie's relationship with Joe Morello was beautiful. I had the honour to study with Joe for 7 months in 1980 when I was over from Australia and he was a fantastically generous and gifted teacher. For Charlie to help him the way he did without hesitation speaks volumes for his respect for the musical lineage that Joe was part of.

Ginger was great. Also very jazz influenced from way back. His drumming on Do What You like by Blind Faith is very ‘Take Five’ ish (Joe Morello ) but Ginger was a right c. And very bitter and even beat the shit outa Jack Bruce on stage apparently. Clapton couldn’t stand his abusive anger. Nope he was good but he wasn’t half the human being our Charlie was. Thanks Mr Watts.

I very briefly met Charlie in Mole Jazz a record shop in Kings Cross London. Just a random meeting, whilst searching through the racks of LPs and there was Charlie doing the same. We spoke briefly and pleasantly for a minute and just carried on browsing. He was friendly and just like any dude you might meet in a record shop.

I certainly a much bigger fan of Rush than I am of the Stones but there are some early clips of Geddy sounding pretty arrogant. I do agree Neil seemed to always be a complete gentlemen and in fact Charlie was a big Neil fan.
@the6ig6adwolf
@the6ig6adwolf 2 года назад
@@binkwood it seems to me that Geddy's perceived arrogance from the earlier years came from him simply being tired during interviews which would obviously come from playing 300+ shows a year.

Over the years I have heard hundreds of musicians if not thousands who said when they saw the Beatles that change their life especially the drummers seeing Ringo and that propelled them and some of them famous drummers to a life of drumming Well as a kid when I saw the Beatles and the Stones I had already been drumming for several years in Drum Corps so it was pretty high-level rudimental snare and I remember sitting at a friends place - my closest friend also a drummer - we were huge Stone's fans and I was sitting by his bed with my 3S tapping away to a tune and my friend said "What the hell are you doing?" in my then sheltered all-rudiments-all-the-time modality I said "Well drumming?" My buddy said "idiot listen just listen" and I did and now having retired from almost 50 years of professional playing I always looked to that moment hearing Charlie ... truly hearing him when I was on stage "Am I serving the music?" and tried all my career to do just that and if I was ... I thank Charlie for that inspiration. Missed.

Really enjoyed hearing you reminisce, sir. Thank you. I've been celebrating Charlie's life through listening to a lot of Stones recordings, both live and in the studio. Such an amazing body of work. And he was such a good sport with the Stones, falling in line with all their trappings and foibles, personnel changes. Never forgetting what he was there to do. I will miss him. No offense, but it's is truly amazing (ironic?) that Keith outlived him!

Keith - of all people - appreciated the integrity Charlie provided; the opposite of his entropy. It's the two of them together that made the chug of the mighty engine of the Rolling Stones. Thanks for sharing this.

@@DavidSmith-ss1cg agree with you, but I consider Keith a person with a lot of integrity and consistency but different style than Charlie. Charlie was a gentleman while Richards is a bohemian. However, it does not matter at all, their friendship was charming.

Thanks, Steve. Charlie Watts was an interesting human and musician. I only witnessed the Stones play live once. it was an amazing experience. As a drummer, I watched Charlie's unusual technique and appreciated its sonic results. Unconventional technique yielded epic results...I still can't explain it. Perhaps that is why I am a conventional drummer and Charlie was not.

A heartening tribute, Steve! You know, drummers really are a world-wide family! As a teenager in Britain in the 1960s I hero worshipped Joe Morello. (Met him 3 times.) I had no idea he was financially in need. So the news that Charlie was such a help to Joe & Jean was great news. God bless all 3 of 'em!! They ALL brought such joy. (At a clinic Joe introduced Jean as "the best thing that's ever happened to me"!) As it says in the Good Book: "And there were giants in the land in those days." So true.
