Oh to be young again...the joy of being on the water at Higgins Lake, with Ernie, Paul, and the Tigers on the radio. Some of my best memories as a teenager, and beyond!

I have lived my entire life in Windsor, Ontario right across the border from Detroit. And it was a privilege to grow up here and listen to Mr. Harwell call Tiger's games. I studied journalism in college and had dreamed of being a sports broadcaster, loving both hockey and baseball and it was Ernie Harwell who was my idol for the game of baseball. He was a good man, a great announcer, a man of faith and a great American. What more could anyone ask of him? In my view, the USA needs more examples like Ernie Harwell!

I’m from Cleveland and used to listen to Tiger games just because of Ernie. He was simply the best at calling a game. Loved him.

Met Ernie at Comerica in the early in the season. He was calling after the 8th inning on in those times. Park was sparsely populated and I saw Ernie leaning on a rail in the concourse. I approached him and he was welcoming so I leaned on the rail with him and watched an inning together. He was polite and talked some baseball with me but we mostly just watched. Just two fans of baseball enjoying a beautiful day at the ballpark.

Out here in Dodgerland where Vin Scully is king, we say farewell for now and Godspeed to our old friend, wonderful man, and legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell. Thanks for everything Ernie. We'll never see a grand act like you again.

Grew up with Ernie Harwell calling the Tigers games in the 60's. Never willingly missed his broadcasts except for when I was actually at the game. Probably the most recognizable voice in Detroit for 40 years. Made the game live. RIP.

That voice, man. I can see my Dad in that garage Saturday afternoons working on our station wagon, changing a part or something with a cigarette at the side of his mouth and one eye closed for the smoke. And Harwell was on the am/fm transistor radio. Fresh air, birds, Mom making dinner. Sweet memories. That's what Saturdays in Detroit used to be. Thanks.

I went to Comerica park on Ernie Harwell day when he was still alive. We got free Ernie Harwell bobbleheads while walking in. We also bought Ernies book "My 60 Years In Baseball" and waited in line so he could autograph it.

Many times, at night, living in Virginia and NE North Carolina near the ocean and beaches, could pick up Tiger games from WJR Detroit in the 60's thru the 80's and so remember Ernie Harwell broadcasting games and a fan of Al Kaline

Tigers fan from age 5 , at the age of 11 a new voice of the Tigers came to the radio, Ernie Harwell , and when my transistor radio late at night in my bed would turn on to the tigers game and Ernie I watched the game , smell the popcorn, tasted the hotdogs and imagined the taste of Strohs Beer. We miss you Ernie and to this day 70 years later I still am a Tigers Fan.

Glad this popped up on my youtube. There was no announcer I would rather hear from a baseball game than Ernie. Really upsets me hearing one of the California baseball announcers on-air these days stealing Ernie's "like a house beside the road" signature call of a strike-out. Wish the MLB offices would tell that guy to come up with his own call. That one belonged to Ernie, and should only be used in reference to Ernie.

I heard him as a little leaguer. Later I got shot up in Vietnam and heard him in my hospital bed as I recovered. He is one of the little pleasures I had in those rough days. Thanks Ernie. See you around the universe.

I met Ernie at a spring training game in the early 1990s. He was just as nice as everyone says. Maybe nicer, if that’s possible. Kaline was correct. Ernie was as close to a “perfect person” as you’re going to get. He simply exuded love.

It's good to know that even though Ernie Harwell is not among us here on earth, he's still announcing baseball games in Heaven between the Heavenly Angel's and the Jesus Saint's. And now sharing the announcers booth is Ernie's number 1 Angel and Saint - his beloved ❤️ Lulu. I can hear another wonderful saying by Ernie as he broadcasts the baseball games ⚾️ in Heaven. "He hit that ball past him so fast. It was like he was just standing at the Pearly Gates looking for Saint Peter." Rest in Heavenly Peace, Ernie, give your wings a break. Jesus really needed you up there with him forever. You're in the best baseball stadium in the universe. And what a crowd 👏

My parents are baseball nuts and it's all about the Tigers and Ernie Harwell! Now in their 80's, my parents still watch every single game that is aired. I was born in the 60's, and grew up listening to Ernie. Usually on the radio. His golden tone, never at a loss for words and keeping the game exciting. I can still hear him in my head. My favorite catchphrase is, " ....and its....loooong goooone!". You may have been born in Georgia, but you're Detroits favorite son to millions of fans! We miss you!

There will never be another Ernie Harwell. Men like him come along once in a lifetime. And we are lucky that we had him here in Detroit and he wasn't somewhere else. As a kid I used to listen to the games while I was in bed with my little radio by my pillow hearing Ernie call the game with Paul Carey. Running around in the backyard on a summer day with the game on the radio. In the car going wherever with Ernie Harwell on the call. It's a shame about the damn fools who fired him in 91 who had no sense of tiger tradition or sense at all. Bo Schembechler had no business in baseball. Thank God for Mike Ilitch who brought Ernie back immediately after such fan outrage. I was disgusted when that happened to Ernie. Then they bring on these two new guys in the booth that didn't go over well. And they try to make up for it by letting Ernie back to call only two innings every game. There was tension between Ernie and the two idiots they had in the booth at the time. And Ernie being the gentleman that he is bowed out gracefully. Again thank God for Mike Ilitch who brought Ernie back. A true legend in Detroit sports. R i p Ernie

The tears were flowing thru this video. Ernie was part of my childhood, my teens and adult life. I remember listening to him broadcast Tiger games on my small transistor radio underneath my pillow when I was a kid. "Stood there like a house beside the road" was one of my favorite sayings of his.

THE BEST TIGER, EVER !

I randomly caught him on the radio in Atlanta Georgia late one night doing a Tigers game back around 2000. I immediately knew I was listening to someone special. He had a great voice for night games

Ernie was a truly a legendary broadcaster and, especially, person...I grew up with Ernie, his voice so perfectly painting a picture of the game far better than any HD TV broadcast can ever hope to capture.... the calming sense and melodic reassurance created a game that, whether win or lose, you realized you had just spent 3 hours with a person that you cherished .... there will never be anybody like Ernie - god bless you and thank you for the memories that will last a lifetime

There are certain things I was blessed experiencing in my lifetime, The Beatles, Al Kaline, and Ernie Harwell. All of them as close to perfection as you will ever find. To this day, I don't know how Ernie knew where that young man who caught the fall tip was from, but we all believed anyway. I'm not sure who thought it was a good idea to get rid of Ernie but that kind of silliness should disqualify you from ever holding a job doing anything ever. Credit Mr. I for bringing him back. RIP Ernie. Tiger fans the world around love and miss you.

I finally made it to Ernie Harwell Field today! That is what the Navin Field Grounds Crew has renamed the field of Old Tiger Stadium. The spirit of Ernie is still alive there! Great video, and so appropriate that it ends with another fine Detroit Tiger gentleman, good old number 6, Al Kaline. Both he and Ernie were great at their respective jobs, but they are even greater human beings.

I did our high school games on the radio and you bet I used all of Earnies lines why not he was the best . We had a few things in common we both are veterans we have the same birthday January 25 he married LuLu I married Luann . RIP to a great man I miss you as all of the Tiger's fans .

Simply irreplaceable.

I stopped by to see and hear Ernie once again. Most of my life was spent near Akron, listening and following the Indians through the likes of Herb Score, Jimmy Dudley, Bob Neal, Harry Jones, Joe Tait. But I must say that the occasional honor of tuning-in to WJR in Detroit and listening to Ernie Harwell was a special time, whenever I was lucky enough to pick-up the station in Akron.

Thank you so much for this. As far as I'm concerned, the voice of baseball died yesterday. I'll miss him though I never met him personally, I spent many a lazy summer afternoon with him. God Bless you Earnie, see you soon my friend.

My most vivid memory of Ernie was when somebody his a foul ball into the stands and he would say "That one caught by a man from Northville" or Adrian, or Imlay City, or Ann Arbor or any of a hundred small towns in SE Michigan. And I would think "How does he know where some random guy in the stands was from?".

I remember hearing people from foreign countries say that they learned English from listening to Ernie Ernie Harwell.

10 years he's been gone and I still miss him. I was fortunate enough to intern for the Tigers in 1999 after growing up listening to EVERY game I could from age 6 (1984) on into college. It was amazing to see how this man treated others. He made you feel like you were the important one. My job after the final out on Sept. 27, 1999 was to get Ernie down from his catbird seat behind the plate to the field for the ceremony. He didn't have a formal role as players came in one by one from centerfield returning to wherever they played. I turned and said to him these are the guys you taught me about growing up. The Bird, Al Kaline, Jim Bunning, Gates Brown, Willie Horton, etc. He then proceeded to tell stories -- only I could hear about the next 3-4 guys as they came in. As long as I live I will never forget this moment.

One of the best ever....no matter who you root for!
