Ronald Reagan Interview on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson - 03/13/1975 - Part 02 Part 01 - • Ronald Reagan Intervie... #johnnycarson #thetonightshow #ronaldreagan
Seriously, what the hell happened to TV talkshows? We went from two adults having an intelligent conversation in front of a live audience to.... Kimmel, Colbert and Fallon. This society has devolved
Carson was the perfect politician... He wanted to end the show with everybody happy... And being from the Midwest,,, didn't want to irritate anyone: good Christian attitude.
He was an ACTOR. and not a great one. But a perfect puppet for politics. He worked with the American Manufacturer's Association while hosting a game show after his acting career tanked. They then groomed him to become governor of California, and later, they groomed him to run for President of the USA. While expertly speaking whatever they wrote for him, everything he says during this interview matches the same stuff the AMA created during the 50's
@@jjmanic8783 Grow up, he had to work with a Democrat congress where Democrats held both houses until 1996. You really better educate yourself; you are a fool.
Conservatism has destroyed our middle class (although as California's governor, he was actually pretty liberal). And Reagan was suffering from dementia probably around 1984. BUT - it's pretty clear in this vid why he was so popular as a politician. At this point in 1975, Reagan had been public speaking for almost 40 years. He was smooth, glib, and good looking. No wonder Obama admired him and quoted him - game recognizes game, as they say.
Incredible. Johnny's great quality completely lost on today's hosts he actually lets them talk and answer questions. People conducted themselves with respect and intelligence. What happened?
@@neofusionstylx The big difference between Reagan's time and Trump,s time isn't between Reagan and Trump but, the media had more adults than children. Johnny Carson any day rather than Jim Acosta, Don Lemmon, Rachel Maddow and their ilk.
@@oad51 I don't seem to recall any of this when Obama or Bush was president. We desperately need an adult in the room, not a crybaby president who lies . Mexico is not paying for that wall. Coronavirus did not magically disappear. Russian meddling in our elections was not a hoax.
In what way was the Reagan administration not an economic and foreign relations disaster? Everything he says fittingly comes from a golden age Hollywood movie version of reality.
Well said, they both were gentlemen. It's hard to find people like that in 2023. Society is in moral decay. Now you see the sobs, low IQ morally defective lowlife's roaming our society. God bless 🙏
It's so good to be able to see Ronald Reagan . So many things he says are exactly the problems Donald Trump has addressed in his 1st term as our President. R R's calm demeanor is much like Vice President Mike Pence. Real facts are the truth. Democrats now think Americans are so caught up in their stupidity
MaryJeanne Chessrown I have respect for you all Mary Jeanne. Genuinely and honestly. I love the older generations and love to hear your perspectives. God bless you - Joe (37 yo)
@Rocky racoon Tadd the sad part is since everybody is dropping ages I'm 68 and I remember stopping watching television in the 60s by accident and then when I did start watching it again or seeing it again I realized it was 100% mind control brainwashing subliminal suggesting same with Hollywood. Fortunately is someone else has mentioned they are destroying themselves exposing themselves and imploding I have a feeling there's a plan somewhere in the heavens
@@orionsghost9511 Saw your response from awhile back and was curious....why this comment? It seemed Reagan may not have specifically been what you were mentioning, but voting, or better yet the system of voting or perhaps our system of government. Or?
How much I miss both of these men! Ronald Reagan was one of our best presidents. Can you imagine a presidential candidate taking all of these questions today, and answering directly and intelligently?
To think that it's 33 years since that Regan was the president, but no one has taken and notice. And the deficit has gone up 57 fold to $32 trillion. I live in Sydney/Aust and last Wednesday I delivered a talk on the demise of the US and referenced Regan in it.
@@scottstevens2752the law and order president? Yeah most corrupt administration, budget deficits and debt ridden, Government is the problem? Stealing from the poor to cut taxes for the rich? Tell me more of why he helped America? Reagan wanted to poison the air and water in America. He must’ve rally loved Americans…
Ronald could talk and answer all of the questions and speak without a teleprompter, he used index cards to ensure he covered what he wanted to, can’t imagine Obama or Biden doing that and Hillary Clinton had a copy of the debate questions and topics provided to her by Donna Brazile.
@Red Balloon Conan is the best American TV show and Sona) adorable girl he has been to my country too, so a big + Falon is a moron, Jimmy is not funny he he he - too political on the off time Cordon is okay, Oliver is meh
@@wiredwebmaster True, but regardless of Politics if you can't be a decent human being to hell with you and that's the problem with Trump. Reagan would have hated The Donald's constant always about him whining, Jan.6th and and coddling of Putin.
@@wiredwebmaster *BIDINFLATION* IS REALLY REAL & SUCKY TOO ! 🇨🇳BuyDumb🇨🇳 has been a corrupt bad actor for his entire rotten political life...HUNTER CALLS JOE THE *BIG-GUY* ,But the honest discernable truth about him tells the tale of his true name...And that name is; 🇨🇳TRAITOR JOE🇨🇳
The good old days when talk shows meant something. Look at this.. A long, respectful conversation about serious topics, without too much interruption and bullshit.
@Benni B You are absolutely correct and it's even worse. In double blind tests, some who watch too much internet and social media evidenced lower cognitive performance than those who limited internet and social media. Unfortunately, when a percentage of the high internet/social media group agreed to limit use, six months later their performance had not recovered. And at one year, the same thing.
@@bloodygano7313 - that sounds like a claim that it would be good to get a second opinion about. Maybe from someone who has a different political stance than you, to try to remove the influence of bias.
Holo, you're grieving the loss of common decency while shooting off the divisiveness that killed it. Johnny was a liberal. If we could all flush the contentious tribalism we'd get back some of that common decency. ...I'm not holding my breath.
This is the man who made me realize I'd been wrong my whole life. I voted against him twice. And am so glad I was outvoted. Sure he made some mistakes, every president does... but he did far more good than anyone since, and most of those who came before. I'm proud to admit I was wrong. I learned.
“It’s far easier to fool people than to convince them they’ve been fooled.” Mark Twain’ 1906 I’ll add; and extremely admirable when a man has the humility to do so! Thank you for being that rare individual. God bless you!
I miss the maturity. Popular media interviews with politicians now sound closer to teenagers than adults. It's a shame. Are there no regular adults in media anymore?
Watching politicians in 2020 is like watching proponents of one ingrained, mindless, high school football rivalry versus another. Politicans, and people, can't even rationally discuss ANY political point without juvenile name-calling.

Apart from being a gentleman and a good actor, R.R must have been one of the most brilliant presidents USA has ever had. And with a sense of humor too.
And as a consequence he was roundly laughed at by liberal politicians as being an airhead bereft of intellect and inherently evil because he was conservative. Pat Brown was a good example. He was essentially Hilary Clinton during his 3rd campaign for Governor, making fun of Reagan and not taking him seriously because after all, no one was going to elect a B-actor with no political experience. Brown was so smug and cynical toward Reagan's candidacy that he took a scene from one of Reagan's movies and exploited it to tell a 9-year-old kid that Reagan shot Abraham Lincoln. Can't make this up. I'm old enough to remember this. Reagan simply went about his business despite all the personal attacks, maintained his good humor and saved his criticisms of the opposition for when it would land solidly. He was not only smart and politically savvy, his lifelong experience as a Democrat before switching parties a few years before his run for Governor gained a lot of support from Democrat voters in California, and it resulted in a landslide victory in a state in which Democrats outnumberd Republicans 3-2. He was a man of substance and impeccable character, and a man who welcomed being underestimated by his detractors. They did so at their peril, and that's ultimately why Reagan never lost an election.
@@briane173 when he abolished the fairness act, he lost a lot of trust. When he sold arms to the middle east and threw others under the bus for it, he lost respect from more.
@@briane173He actually lost the 'Republican' nomination in both [68] and [76] although he is one of only✌🏼 Presidents that have EVER won 49 states. - Reagan won a landslide re-election victory, carrying 525 electoral votes, 49 states, and 58.8 percent of the popular vote. 💪🏼🇺🇲
I'm not sure who started the trend to politics and not comedy, but I sure long for the old days. I remember over the years Johnny's original show was two hours, the an hour and a half and finally one hour. I thought the show would suffer but never did. I miss him and Ronald Reagan.
I met him when I was just a little kid in San Diego. kids know the feeling when around a nice “big person”. He was the best and kindest nicest guy ever.
Because Republicans don't support abortion, arent anti guns, don't want insane taxes on the rich, and don't support $15 minimum wage that would cause economic collapse
Ronald Reagan was the first President I voted for. He was like my late Daddy…backed up his words with action. I remember Reagan handling the air traffic controllers and his bombing Libya. He is greatly missed.
I recall listening to President Reagan on TV discussing the Wall in Russia. I recall him addressing the nation and hearing his solitude, his authority, and his compassion for people all over the world. If there ever was a modern day Father of Our Country, it was Ronald Reagan.
A perfect example of why Johnny Carson's program was so popular, and why such a huge audience stayed up late to watch it. Thoughtful, incisive, insightful interviews interlaced with warmth and gentle, non-confrontational humor were, and still are, extremely popular. Hardly any of today's programming comes even close to matching it, which is why their ratings are so low by comparison.
I remember seeing Letterman interview George W. Bush during the 2000 election campaign and Letterman's distaste for Bush was really obvious, particularly in his body language. I can't even imagine any of the current crop of late show hosts giving a respectful interview to any Republican that was even remotely conservative in outlook: I'm sure they'd be full of snark and bile.
I would listen to Reagan on my drives to college in 1975 on the car radio. I think he was the California Governor at the time. He was concise, sharp, and told the truth. He was the first President I voted for at age 21.
@@9and7 Someones a baby because they dont think his deeds matched his rhetoric? How does that work? You call names at people when you dont agree? That says alot about ya.
Fallon will do whatever his corporate masters tell him to. He has no power at NBC and not enough fans to want him to stay as Tonight Show host if the network dumped him. He's a corporate tool and a fame slave.
@@blazerocker1734 It's just a talent you're born with. Carson was a rare breed!! Eg, he could take a joke that went real bad and turn it around and make people fall on the floor laughing! That's a talent Fallon don't have. He has some good guest's on the show (which i don't watch just hear on rare occasions so n so was on Fallon) but the guy isn't 50% of a Johnny Carson! Leno was about a 40% of Carson. I think Conan is about a 50% he should of been offered the job. Kimmel is ok too. Johnny was the king of Monologue and i don't think there's a person alive as good as him or ever will be.
It’s BS. Reagan was taking an extreme example and making folly of it. Now you have the republicans giving tax cuts to the already wealthy and corporations and the corporate executives are hauling it out the door in a wheelbarrow all the while they throw scraps at the middle class and poor. You sad folks have been sold a line of crap. But you’re not even going to realize it even when it’s rubbed on your nose.
I can' think of another time that Johnny had such an extended political conversation. Yet, at the time, there was no better person to have that conversation with. Regardless of his policies, I can't remember a politician other than Reagan that truly spoke to the hearts of the American people like him. He had a warmth, and a way of communicating where it didn't feel like you were spoken down to. While I might not of agreed with all of his policies, you never felt worse for having heard Reagan speak about the America he loved so deeply. I truly miss that.
You want to know what i really miss about him the most? His wit. He was really a funny guy and he could make both sides laugh. The debate with Walter Mondale is a classic.
@@jstravelers4094 I watch many news channels and at least Fox has some hilarious commentary with Gutfeld. CNN has sticks up their @$$es, that's all that can be said. I enjoyed Alan Colmes radio show and only Fox made that possible. And John Batchelor's show was very inspiring.
This is a timely commentary Betty. It is interesting to note that President Reagan simply sat in a chair, legs crossed, calm, and kept his voice in a similar calming tone. Unfortunately politicians today are hyper focused, donor sensitive, micro managed, and obsessed with their self-image. They rarely allow for lengthy ad hoc discussion, which is sometimes the most interesting, and sadly wouldn't know that such an opportunity exists. I say all of this equally surprised at your own calming image which I say respectfully is beautiful and comforting in its own way.
I miss Reagan, too. I also miss the men and women, like my Grandparents, who predominately appreciated the class, tact, and language skills of men like Reagan and Carson. Sadly, class, tact, and language skills fell out of favor, for the most part, 30 years ago, give or take.
As a Democrat I have a lot of respect for Ronald Reagan. He was a decent, smart and dignified politician. This is a quality that has been lost in today’s political environment.
IF strong men will NOT MAKE A STAND, and stand UP for Biblical Values, then the result will be moral decay, decadence, and ultimate failure of ANY SOCIETY.......look at history, ancient Rome became a brothel, and a drunkard, and went down. same as the rich nations, of today, some to a greater extent than others, but, still going down; empires/ and kingdoms, come and go, absorbed by others,...on and on....
Wow! Every thing he said is as relevant now as it was then. We were blessed beyond measure with his leadership. If only we could see the likes of a mind like that in our Government today.
I wish I lived through the Reagan Presidency. I've done a lot of studying on presidents and as a conservative myself I believe he was the best orator, had the best policies, and was genuinely a truly loving and caring human being. Ronnie for life
Reagan increased military spending to defeat Soviet Russia. It forced Gorbachev to negotiate with Reagan for peace & in 1990 caused the fall of Communist Europe. They became Democratic republics & joined NATO (enemies became allies). We have Reagan to thank for that. Study your history, or you’ll continue to look uneducated .
Have you actually heard brutal honesty before? Call up your mother or father and ask her what she thinks about a life choice youve made that you know she probably likes or dislikes strongly. Thats brutal honesty. Politicians, comedians, tv actors of all stripes, literally live off of and are hired to fulfil a role which does not involve being genuine. Both reagan and carson are acting here, now the characters they play are genuine because a true actor becomes the character. Like when Frodo throws the ring into mount doom, its not a lying Elijah Wood it really is Frodo. But is it deserving of the claim of brutal honesty? Not too sure. Theres definitely an agenda. This is both a political and money making enterprise, tv that is.

I think mr Reagan was a good soul we loved him as Calif governor and later on president plus he was a darn good actor on the tv show Death Valley Days too
In 1984, I was a member of my high marching band and we won the National Championship that year, so we were invited to play for him at his second term inaugural in January of 1985. One of my proudest moments. What a great President!

Yes he looks and sounds noble but he was the upside down thing of that in real live. You have all no idea what this people was and had done to the Amerikan peaople and the rest of the world. He was an evil in person. Read and watch about MK Ultra Monarch and you will slowly understand that there is nothing like it looks like.
Reagan has accurately summed up the basis of our nation's problems in the first two minutes of this "chat." He speaks the truth more clearly and with greater honesty than any politician alive today. I miss the glory days of the Reagan era.
I was 10 when Reagan was elected in 1980. Before then, the country seemed hopeless and weak. The news counted the days of the Americans held hostage in Iran. Long lines to get gas. The country changed immediately after Reagan was sworn in. It was noticeable even as a kid.
It's shocking to me that California turned so far to the left. A friend of mine calls it Commifornia. It was si Republican. Why did it turn to the left?
I am from England and l would just like to say there will never be another president like Ronald Reagan his witt intelligence, and diplomacy were second to none he was indeed a great man
He is so well-spoken, articulate, and free of filler words, such as "umm, like, ya know, know what I mean?" It's very refreshing to listen to someone speak English so eloquently and properly. 👍☺️
