This video celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Boeing 747, queen of the sky!
Watch the rare 747 roll out and first flight footage from 50 years ago. I pay tribute to my favorite airplane with selected footage over many 747 flights throughout the years.
From the rare cockpit takeoff and landing footage on the 747 classic to the modern luxury 747-8 interior and everything in between, this video is a must for every 747 and any aviation fans!
Note: 747 historical footage are used under the approval by Boeing.
-------
The Boeing 747 was ubiquitous as the world’s “Jumbo jet” with a powerful quad-jet engine and a 150% greater passenger and cargo capacity than its predecessor, the Boeing 707.
The aeroplane had its first commercial flight in 1970, taking off from Dulles international airport after a special ceremony to christen the plane involving First Lady Pat Nixon, with the airline Pan American World Airways and held the record for maximum passenger capacity for an astonishing 37 years. The aeroplane has been regularly used by the prestigious likes of British Airways, Lufthansa, Korean Air and Atlas air.
The distinctive shape of the upper deck made the aeroplane versatile, with this feature permitting an exclusive first class lounge, as seen in this video, whilst also facilitating the forward thinking commercial ideas of Boeing, who actually saw the aeroplane’s long term use being in cargo carrying - the rounded shape allowed the plane to be easily converted to a cargo carrier by removing seats and installing a front cargo door.
The Boeing 747 surpassed all expectations - its production figures were not expected to exit the hundreds but by 1993, production of the aeroplane had surpassed 1000 units as the predicted dominance of supersonic aeroplanes failed to materialise.
The Boeing 747 has enjoyed one of the longest runs of service of any model of aeroplane and select aeroplanes are still in use today, including the Boeing 747-200 and Boeing 747-400.
A number of these wonderful aeroplanes have found homes in museums all over the world upon their retirement, for future generations to admire and appreciate the genesis of the marvel that is the Boeing 747 jumbo jet.

The Classic Pan Am, the airline that started it all. I never got to fly on Pan Am or be on a classic layout but I did get to step aboard 747-200 converted to cargo just after it retired. Seeing that fully analog cockpit was a true joy I won’t soon forget.

Eh she can do cargo service when Joe Sutter the father of the 747 built the plane it was supposed to be a freighter but her size might as well make her an excellent passenger plane so even if the jumbos are phasing out of airline services they still thrive in the cargo freighter sector

Amazing the 747 lives on 50 years later and even survived the A380 onslaught from Europe, just barely but it survives as a freighter. The 747 and I are the same age, I hope she lives longer than me. My first 747 flight was in Branniff's Fat Albert on a ferry flight from Carswell AFB to DFW in 1979.

I loved the Singapore airlines crew members statement, “ it’s the aircraft that made us love airplanes”. Emotional especially for those of us in the industry. A 41 year veteran and still working. Perhaps my favorite memory is working as a pan am flight attendant circa 1979 and my first landing at Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong . The landing was spectacular , and amazing the giant queen maneuvered beautifully every time. Seeing the formidable blue tulip United Airlines 747 was the pinnacle for me. Stunning and knowing my company had 747 s throughout its history , apart from the -300 every variant . And how classy United was throughout the year long festivities and unbelievable respect united gave to our queen. At every hub, there are wall cards with literally thousands and thousands of signatures and notes of love, where fellow employees made special trip to the hubs , just to say goodbye . It’s overwhelming the joy and pride our queen has brought us in my pan am, United 41 year career. She’s has been the foundation and no other aircraft has brought us to our knees as our rightful queen has. With many emotions and tears we say goodbye with much respect and gratitude, as captain said , “hail to the queen”. P.s. the first 747 -400 at the museum is northwest orient airlines not delta. Delta received the aircraft in their merger. Should be noted northwest was a powerhouse in Asia with the 747 s and had all variants as well.

How have you managed to latch your identity to an aircraft manufacturer?
@wizardmix
@wizardmix 5 лет назад
I think the A380 is a very impressive aircraft. I’ve only flown on one twice and it’s so large that one forgets they are on an aircraft at all. That said, much like the DC-10s and L-1011s, the A380 just burns too much fuel. There is one reason and one reason alone why the 747 has been manufactured for 50 years and the A380 will not make it to 20: Freight. The possibility for nose door makes all the difference. Airbus hedged all their bets on the passenger hub and spoke system where airlines needed the A380 to be nearly completely full of pax to maintain profitability. Back in the 60’s, Boeing thought that the future was supersonic travel and they’d better design an aircraft that had the potential to efficiently carry cargo as well. The 777 replaced international routes that were being handled by 747s and the 787 now almost exclusively handles all the super-long range flights requiring less passengers with maximum fuel efficiency.

Had my hands on thousands of 747 prats and worked with some great co workers that has recently lead to a wonderful retirement. So yes, I'm bias of the 747. When I was a little boy, living in Rosewell NM, Boeing brought a ton of the 747’s to train new flight crews how to operate the brand new 747. In those years, there were few suitable runways for training. Roswell had recently been a B-52 base and it had good weather and the base infrastructure suitable. I remember watching 747’s doing touch n goes like Cessna 172’s. It was incredibly exciting as a 4-5 year old. I’ve loved aviation ever since end flew as an aircrew until 2008 when I became ill due to spinal cord injuries. I’ve trained just over 200 pilots from private through ATP. These men and women are pilots all over the world. Many operating 747’s for Cargo companies. The one common sentence heard out of every person I know who has flown the 747 days it’s far easier to fly than any other airliner they have operated. It simply has so much power combined with incredibly intuitive control. One of my students is with Cathay Pacific. He flew their 747-400F and 800F. He said it is far more pleasant to operate than the CRJ-40-50-70-90 that he flew prior to Cathay. I flew a 747-200 sim at Flight Safety in Louisville years ago. Truthfully even the sim was just easy to fly. I’d say the next closest aircraft I constantly hear pilots (friends of mine) have truly enjoyed flying are: L-1011 727 737 A-320 767/757 Newer airliners are all very similar. I have a friend flying the A-350 but prior to that he flew the 777 and 767. He says their all about the same except newer is always adds another level of automation. If God said: I’ll give you another go at life.... when would you like to be born in the past? I’d choose 1930. I’d like to fly DC-6, Super Connie, 707, DC-10’s 747-200-747-400’s. My best friends dad did just that. While he was in the Air Force he flew the Connie AWACS in Nam. I find almost every new Boeing and Airbus boring in comparison to the world I operated in. When I was hired in 1988, my company operated MD-80/90’s, 727-200’s, 737-200/300, 767-200/300, 757-200, DC-8, L-1011, MD-88/90, ..... was a lot of fun flying out of Chicago, Atlanta, Orlando etc and just seeing the incredible array of aircraft from so many eras.

For a little kid like me in the 90s, flying on a 747 was a unique experience. It was so large it almost seemed endless inside. This plane was awe inspiring and still is. I've traveled continents on the graceful 747.

I worked at Boeing for 20 years. I built parts for all models and I was involved with the start of the 777 and 787 models, making parts for the prototypes and then production models. I made hundreds of 747 landing gear doors and 777 nacelle panels.

Lots of great memories on BA 747... 43yrs ago, as a young girl. I and my family flew BA 747 from Seoul, S Korea to America. My first air travel and 1st of many air travels. It was with Korean Air and Pan Am, first stopped at Honolulu, then a layover at LAX, Panama, Brazil. Then back to US 1 yr later. Also, 26 yrs ago briefly as a flight attendant for Northwest airlines, I few on BA 747 many times for those transpacific and transcontinental flights. Pan Am and Northwest do not exist anymore... Powerful but smooth flights... Fun times. Thanks for the video, Sam!

The A380 is an amazing, lavish, beautiful, state of the art plane, with it's showers, and private areas, but the original monster airplane, the B747, in all her beauty, will continue on. When the A380 goes away, as far as being discontinued, i am sure Qantas, Emirates, Thai, British Airways, Qatar, and other carriers that feature the massive aircraft will continue putting him, the king of the skies, in their service.

When I was a child I wasn´t really interested in planes. But that changed when I saw for my first time a 747 landing from outside. I was 12 years old and I was going to Narita, the train goes into tunnel just before the head of the main runway there and in that moment a 747 was landing. It was absolutely stunning.

The first time I flew in 1985 was in a 747 Manila to Narita, then to San Francisco. 4 years ago I flew Korean air Manila to Incheon and they had replaced the usual 777 with a 747. From Incheon they used the usual 777 to DFW, I preferred the 747. I know it's an older platform, inefficient, aging but it was noticeably quieter, bigger and a lot more comfortable considering all I fly is economy.

The only two times I was on a plane were on a 747-400. It was a Saudia modified version in which the top was all economy, I was lucky enough to be seated in the same seat you mentioned to have extra leg room behind the exit door. I remember walking to the lavatory behind the cockpit and a pilot comes out of it telling me it was "crew only" 😅 The return flight, I wasn't as fortunate and was seated in the middle row down below, and I slept throughout the six hour flight back home. That was roughly 6 years ago, and I still remember it vividly, such a majestic aircraft.

Hi Sam, As always great video. I flew the United 747SP from Hong Kong to Singapore couldn't remember when. Then, We took the 747 from Qantas with its Original Australian livery, very colourful and certainly beautiful. My greatest memory and possibly fell in love with the 747 was, when my aunt flew to Hong Kong in 1970s, 8 (or four?) tyres out of a total of 16 were blown. It landed safely in Tokyo. We waited in Hong Kong, I was so excited that I thought the replacement 707 was the real thing. I visited the HARS in Wollonggong to visit a recently (2016?) retired Qantas 747-400 which hold a record of flying the longest distance from Australia to UK. Unfortunately, Qantas was doing something with some of its engine, so I couldn't get into the aircaft and visit its facilities. The second favourite 747 is the Cathay Pacific with its green and BOAC look alike livery. Thank you

if you only need it to be idle the cost will be supctential lower. you could just buy up a fully out serviced 747. the biggest cost will be to have space for it and they means to get it there. the plain it self with out working engines wouldn't be much more pricey than to build a full house.
