Sig Sauer discontinued the Sig P239 in 2018 with no formal announcement or prior notice. That's pretty normal in this industry, but we thought the P239 was worthy of a better sendoff than that, so here's our tribute to Sig's biggest little gun.

The P239 is the last true Sig before they went slapping BS labels and gaudy finishes for the masses. It’s a man’s pistol that is durable, reliable and accurate and flies out of a holster with ease. It’s a Porsche in a parking lot of WRX’s.

I know several women who loved it as well since the smaller grip meant it fit their hand better and they had a much easier time controlling it.

Insanely tight groups and a highly intuitive DA trigger stroke "make the case" for the continued relevance of the P239.

Maximum Ordinate Ability to handle more powerful rounds, ability to function with extremely lightweight and extremely heavy projectiles and everything in between without malfunctioning, no issue with case length so it can fire multiple types of ammunition, i.e. 38spl and 357mag, no issue with contact shots or being fired in a pocket, narrow grips for smaller hands, no issue of weaker hands having to rack a slide, no need for magazines, and very simple to operate...

I have carried a 239 in 40 for 15 years, only finally to replace it with a 365 this year, after receiving my 365, having it recalled then fully testing it with 1500 rounds made it my edc, I sent my 239 back to sig to be rebuilt and to also have a 357 Sig barrel fitted. So now after 15 years and 40,000 rounds I have my favorite gun back again and brand new. And will probably carry it during winter months. I would also like to add, in all that time, and all that ammunition, I have never had a failure with the 239. Sig did replace my 40 barrel, but sent the original back to me, because it is still within specification.

But society dosent want common sense, they want penis compensation, in thier houses cars, clothes, and unfortunately thier guns. (sorry about the rant but it urks me that they spent so much time making the best carry package possible, then just keep tacti-tarding the snot out of it.... I had always thought that the P225A1 was more inline with the P239 rather than the older P225. In fact, when the A1 was released, I called the SIG custom shop and asked them if the barrels for the A1 would work in a 225 or those surplus P6s. They told me, no, they were P239 barrels. Take that for what its worth but from what I understood, the P239 morphed into the P225A1.
@Laotzu.Goldbug
@Laotzu.Goldbug 6 лет назад
Internally the p225 A1 shared more with the p-239 than the original P6/225, because Sig made some improvements to their entire line in the mid 90s ( different slides, barrels, and grips) but the P6 was only being manufacturer for the German police, so that was never updated. The p-239 was going to be there only single stack DA/SA, but the market for a gun with the original looks, and the success of the Legion series cause them to push for the A1 version. I guess they figured they didn't want to have duplicates in their catalog, but in my opinion the p-239 is a better gun for carry, especially in the SAS version

Tavor guy you can use the .40 mags for .357sig but not opposite, follower in the .357 mag is formed to suit the "bottleneck" of the cartridge it was made for. say, how knowledgeable are you on sigs and the p239 in particular? I have a question that's quite, uh, pedantic relating to serial numbers. the "SA/SA4/S4" question. why does the S4 exist? or, in what way is it different enough to warrant breaking from standard nomenclature for a short period ('96-'97) in the middle of its production run?

Aside from 225 A1's factory SRT, I can't see a remarkable difference between it and the 9mm 239. An advantage the 239 has is the interchangability of calibers (.40, 357 Sig, and 9mm). Absolutely no regrets in buying the 239 in .40 caliber years ago and carry IWB during the winter when the weather permits practical concealment garments. In hot weather, I carry the .380 Bersa Thunder Plus (16 rd. double stack magazine capacity) IWB. BOTH the Sig. and Bersa are double/single actions and have similar hammer let-down levers for manual of arms continuity.

Excellent video! Not only very informative, but done in a very entertaining manner. The P239 is a terrific pistol...if you like your 226/229 it is a natural transition and enjoyable to shoot. As you said though, for *some* the extra weight, lower mag capacity and higher purchase cost made it perhaps a little less desirable. However for the rest, it remains a unique and treasured pistol. Thank you!

I'm sure it will never happen, but it would be nice if MEC-GAR would start producing P239 mags. And knowing them, they could probably work a little magic and fit an extra round in there. I've always thought this is a good carry gun, especially in point 357 Sig. You essentially get the same thing as a .357 mag revolver, except with 7 + 1 capacity, better sights, and much easier and quicker reloads. And for me personally, better ergonomics.

This is one of the reason I've come to dislike SIG Sauer as a brand. No other manufacturer comes close in terms of coming up with new pistols, discontinuing them, or redesigning an established model so much that the older one is no longer compatible with the new one. Compare them to Beretta, Glock, H&K, CZ, or even S&W. I understand it's a competitive market and discontinuing the P239 is regrettably understandable but they are extreme that basically nothing is safe in their catalog

I've been carrying a P239 9mm for about 7 years. I have been very pleased with it. I can understand why it's been eclipsed by a whole new generation of guns. Today, it's appeal is to a very limited segment of shooters. But I am one of those shooters, and it suits me to a tee. So, not totally gone, and definitely not forgotten.

OMG, how did I miss this! I feel so lucky to have the SAS model. I have way too many pistols , if there is such a thing, and a stupid amount of concealed pistols that eventually I found something more to my liking. I quit buying concealed carry pistols after I purchased a p239 SAS. For me it’s a perfect carry gun. It’s also one of the few conceal pistols I don’t fear having a premature fire. The SAS, you can hide it in a ball of yarn and pull it out and it won’t snag. Lastly, after your 7 rounds the gun can be used as a club:-) Glad I have more mags than I will ever need.

It is unfortunate this superb option for DA/SA shooters has been discontinued. This firearm fits into the category of "carryable range gun". I have owned both the Smith and Wesson 3913, and the Sig P239. I still have the P239. I found the 3913 to be greatly inferior to the P239. Eventually, I sold the 3913. I do not miss the 3913 at all !! In stark contrast to the P239, too many of the other so called "carry guns" are so small and so light they discourage sufficient range practice. As understandable as its demise may be, metal frame pistols - like the P239 - bestow a pride of ownership that no polymer frame handgun can ever come close to !

(Stamped on the magazine it just says P225-1) The bottom plate of this magazine feels a little different than the original P239 mags, because it is shaped for the magazine well of the P225-A1. but it fits just fine and operates just fine. @Laotzu.Goldbug
@Laotzu.Goldbug 6 лет назад
The 1911 will never be discontinued though. That's because it's a general style of gun rather than a particular model. Sig was the only one who made the p239, they have the copyright, and no one else will ever make it again. 1911's are made by dozens if not hundreds of manufacturers around the world, and probably will never go out of style as long as people are still shooting firearms recreationally. It's kind of like the difference between BMW stopping production of the M6, and the idea that we can stop production of _SUVs._

Obergruppenfürher John Smith You likened 1911's to SUV's? Now a glock might be analogous to a generic SUV!
@Laotzu.Goldbug
@Laotzu.Goldbug 6 лет назад
I think you're missing the point. A "1911" and an "SUV" are both pretty wide-reaching, and somewhat vague categories of cars. They're made by countless numbers of manufacturers. I was comparing them in that regard, not in terms of anyting about their similarity or aesthetic Appeal. On the other hand, just like P239, Glock is a specific brand, if not a specific model of firearm. They can easily be discontinued by the gun maker, but "the 1911"or "the SUV" can't exactly be "discontinued" by anyone.
@LV_CRAZY
@LV_CRAZY 6 лет назад
Obergruppenfürher John Smith I understand and see your point, until I recalled the existence of the poly 80 and Lone Wolf glocks. My point was precisely about form, function and aesthetics. The p239 is a fantastic gun. Several years ago with my wife got her concealed carrylicense, we went to the shooting range so she could rent several different guns hoping to find one to feel comfortable with. She tried clocks, Springfield, Smith & Wesson's, ruger's, didn't really like any of them.the gentleman working there recommended the sig p-239, she tried it and instantly fell in love with it. She still carries it every day

Thanks for the information. I had not heard about the decision to discontinue the P239. I have one and is it far and away is my favorite handgun and I was very disappointed by the decision. Even more disappointing was the fact that they will be discontinuing providing spare parts and magazines.

I wish I still had my P239. I had it in 40 with a 357 barrel and a complete 9mm upper. That extra heft really toned down recoil in all 3 calibers especially compared to these polymer pistols.

The weight, light recoil and accuracy makes it a great paper puncher. I've had one for 6 years now in 9mm and take it to the range on a regular basis. To bad Sig discontinued it, but I have mine and never plan on selling it.

Nice tribute to an old friend. I have a P239 in .40 S&W, which by the way is sitting on my desk right now. I recently changed out the recoil spring and put a new steel guide rod in it, both are new original Sig parts. I also just bought another Sig magazine for it so these parts are still available from Sig. It's a very well made pistol. While it may not be as light as some polymer pistols or have the higher capacity, it remains a very good defensive carry weapon.

1-9-22 Update: Back in 2021, I achieved a life goal and got my license to carry in July and in early August, I found this gun in 9mm on Gunbroker for a really good price! With the original box, manual and extra magazine! The icing on my First Time Gun Owner Cake? It had the two tone finish I wanted! My first gun is my dream gun, and I've wanted it for the past 10 years! I have named her Henrietta after the main character from the anime Gunslinger Girl who uses the exact same pistol, and I'm NEVER selling or trading her! Got another magazine (3 more to go), and extra recoil springs from Sig's website as well! Now to break in the holster with leather conditioner and take more lessons in the summer! Love from Pittsburgh PA Chris, keep up the great content!

The BHP and now this. It is truly a shame. The old guard slowly fades away. But, because of my apparent fetish of appreciating metal, hammer fired pistols, that no else seems to want, i now must acquire one of these too. Thanks for the video

I carried one of these in .357 Sig for 10 years. Loved it. A little chunky for CCW especially in warm climates but it shot like a laser out to 20m. Only knock I had was the controls are all on the wrong side and left hand holsters were hard to find before internet gun shops.

Sitting 8 feet away from my P239 in .40 in my living room. I’d wanted one since I was 16 and picked one up at a gun show about 15 years ago. It's way too heavy to carry concealed given the options (also have a P365) but getting rid of a steel frame Sig seems like a fool's errand.

My late Scotch/Turned American friend stacked some bodies himself with this exact gun, and he carried it when he passed away. He swore by it. He liked my pair of P229 Legions (9MM), but his P239s were enviable as they were a bit slimmer and shot just as well. Rest In Peace, The Mad Scotsman.

What a damn shame, unfortunately Sig is too busy rebranding Chinese optics and gaudy MOLON LABE variants of their guns.
@Laotzu.Goldbug
@Laotzu.Goldbug 6 лет назад
This, but unironically. I miss the old sick from a few years ago, which still had a full line of all their metal frame guns in all the wacky configurations, was trying things like the p224 and the P229 carry, was still making all the classic 550 series rifles, and was still known for their quality. Now they're trying to be "the complete systems provider". I'm sure they'll make some more money in the short-term, but their brand legacy will be ruined forever. I guess that makes sense since their current CEO was formerly the CEO of Kimber, and then he moved after ruining that company, and he'll probably do the same again in a few years.
@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
Is this true, Sig doesn't really have an optics division of their own? They just are rebranding Chinesium?
@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
+Obergruppenfürhrer John Smith I believe you are correct. The way Sig has handled the rollout of the P365, an ostensibly innovative design, was absolutely horrendous. They were deceptive, dishonest, and ultimately succeeded in putting a stain on their brand which already was suffering. I have no plans to buy the P365 now after witnessing the bullshit they are doing with outsourced parts and poor QA. I try to have sympathy for businesses that are trying to remain competitive in a very, very tight market, but the way Sig is doing this is just the wrong way to go. Sadly I see the same thing happening at another former favorite brand of mine, Walther (thanks to their parent company, Umarex, most likely).
@Laotzu.Goldbug
@Laotzu.Goldbug 6 лет назад
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 as to the Optics, it depends what you mean. Is there a corporate division of Sig Sauer USA that is focused on Optics? Yes. Are any of these Optics actually made in the same facilities where they produce their firearms? No, absolutely not. In truth, their quality covers a wide range. The lower-priced ones are definitely just rebranded Chinese crap. The higher end ones can actually be pretty decent, with some being made in Japan, if I'm not mistaken. That said, when you're paying that much, you're not really getting any discount compared to some of the more well-known brands, in that price range, like vortex. Or even Leupold.
@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
That makes sense. Nothing is what it seems anymore in today's global economy. Even BMW's are 60% Chinese made.

The Sig P225 was even better and slimmer. Those could be had at even cheaper prices and they had a European mag release..What I miss and it's where Smith pissed me off is how they discontinued the second and third generation semi auto's and the Nightguard series of revolvers. I have never ever had a single issue with my 4006 or 3913 and those have had thousands of rounds through them and been carried in all types of elements. EXCELLENT VIDEO LUCKY THANK YOU

I briefly considered selling mine in .40 after 17 years of ownership. Then I took it to my range recently for some recoil therapy. I needed that reminder of how accurate, reliable, and soft, comfortable shooter that it is. The trigger was excellent after the first heavy, hammer down shot. Mag capacity at 7+1 is of no concern for me. If I ever need more rounds than that, I most likely should not be there. Not a big fan of the really light pistols out now. In my opinion, some of them are not fun to shoot with a lot of power vs the light weight. No problem concealing the P239 and its moderate weight is not a nuisance to me. It's my light clothing EDC. Lots of clothing it's either the P239 or my Steyr M40a1. Tough choice.

It’s a nice gun, I’ve owned one for over 10 years, but never carried it. It is just too heavy for my taste and I was trained on glocks, so the trigger was hard for me. But the gun really does feel great in the hand. It is one of the most comfortable guns I own. RIP 239 😢

I actually looked around for one in my area for a while. My state is very gun carry friendly so the subcompact size wasn’t a necessity. I carried a G23 converted to 357SIG for many years but about 6 months ago I went for a P320 Compact in 357SIG. I really like that caliber and nearly always carry it in cooler weather where bundled clothing is the norm. I also have a P228/M11A1, P227(45ACP) and P365. Like was said in the video, I’m a big fan of DA/SA autoloaders (over striker fired) but seems the hammer firing action is slowly drifting off into the sunset.

I bought mine in 2000, after shooting every 357 SIG I could get my hands on. The 239 is heavy for a true CCW option, but it's the smallest, lightest gun that is suitable for full-power 357 SIG loads (like Underwood and other boutique ammo makers are doing now.) In that time it's run through a case of ammunition of various provenance and has never let me down. It's sad to see them go, and now I have to go panic-buy some magazines.
