It starts with a wild pedicab ride to the Gadodia Spice Market, in Old Delhi, India.
The Gadodia Spice Market, also known as Khari Baoli, is one of the largest wholesale spice markets in Asia. Located near the historic Red Fort in Old Delhi, India, it has been a hub of spice trading since the 17th century. Here's more about this bustling market:
History
Established: Khari Baoli dates back to the Mughal era, and it has been a center for spice trading for centuries.
Name Origin: "Khari Baoli" is derived from "khari" meaning "salty" and "baoli" meaning "stepwell." It refers to a saline water stepwell that existed in the area during the time of its establishment.
Key Features
Spices: The market offers a vast array of spices, including chili, turmeric, cumin, coriander, saffron, and many more. Both whole spices and ground spices are available.
Dry Fruits and Herbs: Apart from spices, the market also sells dry fruits, nuts, herbs, and other condiments.
Aromatic Experience: The air in the market is filled with the intense aroma of various spices, creating a unique sensory experience.
Wholesale and Retail: While primarily a wholesale market, many vendors also sell in smaller quantities to retail customers.
Significance
Trade Hub: Khari Baoli is a crucial trading center, with spices and other goods being shipped across India and internationally.
Cultural Landmark: The market is not only a commercial hub but also a cultural landmark, reflecting the rich history and diversity of Indian cuisine.
Visiting the Market
Timing: The market is usually open from early morning until late evening, but it's best visited during the daytime when all shops are open.
Navigation: The narrow, bustling lanes can be overwhelming, but they offer a glimpse into the vibrant life of Old Delhi.
Local Interaction: Visitors can engage with local shopkeepers, learn about different spices, and even witness the age-old traditions of spice trading.
Tips for Visitors
Bargaining: Bargaining is common, so don't hesitate to negotiate prices.
Carry Cash: While some vendors may accept digital payments, it's advisable to carry cash for purchases.
Be Prepared for Crowds: The market can get very crowded, especially during peak hours, so be prepared for a bustling atmosphere.
The Gadodia Spice Market is a must-visit for anyone interested in culinary arts, history, and the vibrant culture of India.

@@theotherHOLLYWOOD Winter of 1991-92. I spent three months there on a fellowship to do research for my novel Sister India, set in Varanasi. Very easy kind of research, just taking notes on everything I saw or did all day. It was a bonus life, that's the way I think of it.

@@peggypayne8705 Just ordered Sister India (on Ebay. Sorry. 🙄). Varanasi has been on my bucket list. Would love to combine it with Holi. Did you know, there is a song titled Sister India by Adam Riviere? You can find it on Spotify. However, it's electronic music (not my favorite). Was he inspired by your book? Hmmm... Also, Amazon only has one copy of your book left.

@@theotherHOLLYWOOD Thought I answered this somewhere. It was 91-92 for 3 months. No doubt it's a different world now, but that market looked the same
