Wedding Day Customs
Baraat: The groom's procession to the bride's home or wedding venue, usually accompanied by music, dancing, and sometimes even a decorated horse or car.
Jaimala (Varmala) Ceremony: The bride and groom exchange garlands, symbolizing their acceptance of each other.
Kanyadaan: The bride's father gives her away to the groom, entrusting her to his care.
Sindoor and Mangalsutra: The groom applies sindoor (vermilion powder) to the bride's forehead and ties a mangalsutra (sacred necklace) around her neck, symbolizing their marital bond.
Saat Phere: The couple takes seven rounds around a sacred fire, each round signifying a vow they make to each other.
Post-Wedding Customs
Vidaai: An emotional farewell where the bride leaves her parental home to start her new life with the groom.
Griha Pravesh: The bride is welcomed into the groom's home with a traditional ceremony.
Reception: A grand celebration held after the wedding where the newlyweds are introduced to friends and extended family.
These customs can vary widely based on regional, cultural, and religious differences within India, but they all emphasize the importance of family, tradition, and community in the union of the couple. Heavily steeped in tradition, and unlike any wedding this westerner has seen before. And I'm thankful for the opportunity.
