In this video we take trip up Calton Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland. One of the 7 hills of Edinburgh. We see the Edinburgh Acropolis ( Edinburghs Shame) and the Nelson Monument, the sister of the 1 o'clock gun. We also enjoy the views of Edinburgh, leith, Arthurs seat and Edinburgh castle.

Spec walk-about of Calton Hill, Tony. You caught some stunning views of the Castle and Arthur's Seat from Calton. I will have to allow time to go up Calton on the next trip to Edinburgh. Slàinte

Thank you for these fantastic videos. I'll be spending about a day and a half in Edinburgh next month and had my heart set on making the hike up both Calton Hill and Holyrood Park to Arthur's Seat. Is it worth making the trip to both in that short amount of time, or is there one I should definitely do over the other? Looks like Calton has the superior photo op, but Arthur's Seat is a view that can't be missed.

John Jenzeh they are both great views, and very different. I don’t see why you would not be able to do them both in one day. If you really wanted to. Calton hill really does not take long to climb, and there is a road straight to the top. Nice and easy.👍

Have you been to Lauriston Castle? We tried to see it but it was closed. The grounds were interesting to explore.

It could possibly be have both names, I suppose it just depends which history or research i read. I am not an expert or historian in any way. I just enjoy sharing little bits. Love learning new stuff i didn't know, so please always correct me if i'm wrong. Hope you had a great new year.

Why does the ball drop and gun go off at 1:00? Is there a specific reason? Thank you for all of the videos.

Tony mentions it in the video. It was a signal to the ships captains to set there chronometers to the correct time. The one o'clock gun was introduced to be a audible signal when the weather is foggy and the ball isn't visible from the ships.

@@adm3303 To put it in a nutshell.. Time !! Excuse the pun... If it was done at say 12 o'clock that would require the gun to be fired and reloaded 12 times in rapid succession all timed to perfection so that the last bang was dead on 12 o'clock. Using just one shell means that the gunner can look at his watch, count down to 12. 59.59 and pull the cord thereby signalling 1 o'clock bang (another pun, sorry) on time. Also the ball would also have to be winched up and down 12 times... As it is, it is winched up into position and dropped exactly on 1 o'clock... Nice and simple all round.
