maybe 19th century way of fundraising? build part of it so people see it and it generates interest to raise the rest of the money? the Statue of Liberty was built in France but the Americans were still trying to raise money for the pedistal and assembly in NY so they sent the torch on tour in the hopes people would see it, be impressed, and donate money. By the way, thanks for the videos! My wife and I visited (from Chicago) in November and watched all your videos before we arrived. They were very helpful and interesting - thanks! It was our 1st visit to Edinburgh but not our last. We LOVED your city. Thanks again.
I am so disappointed that my friend and I did not have time to have a wander on Calton Hill while in Edinburgh in 2015, ...so close, but yet so far. The views of Arthur's Seat and the Castle were phenomenal, especially at that time of day. Slàinte
As always a great video Tony , look forward to your offerings every week.my wife and I will bein Edinburgh in early April for 8 days hope to see you roaming the royal mile or somewhere else equally intriguing,
Hi Broonfords! I absolutely LOVE your channel. We’ve been around Scotland - but my heart will always belong to Edinburgh. Thank you for making these videos ♥️♥️
Another brilliant video. Calton Hill was on my list of places to visit on my trip to Edinburgh....now it's a must. A huge thank you to you,Kirsten and the pooches for all the wonderful videos you do X
I was wondering, if you have been to Ratho? I have seen pictures but wanted to know more about it if possible? It looks like a nice town/village. Thank you so much. :o)
Just recently there were plans to complete the monument , not surprisingly history repeated itself & the idea came to nothing due to lack of funding ! , i think it would make a great concert venue with a spectacular glass roof restaurant & the best panoramic views in the country !.
Hi Tony! My 70 y/o father and I will be visiting for latter half of April this year. Albeit a healthy fella, I'm wondering about general walking distances and time. How much is too much to plan for a day? A video or brief explanation about what is doable in a day would be very helpful for planning! Thanks!
Great video Tony! It's some walk up Calton Hill, we did it a few years ago, but well worth it! I think the monument looks great, perhaps it was never meant to be how it should have been!
Thanks! Great video!! I wonder if they decided to build an 'end' first instead of the foundations all the way 'round so that it could be seen from all over Edinburgh & perhaps generate more interest? I mean, not many people would see anything being built on the top of a hill unless they actually went up there & it probably wasn't on everyone's daily To Do list ;) The Nelson monument would have already been built?? Maybe they went up first to 'compete' with it???? Are there any personal diaries of the people involved with it?? And....YES!......I want you to go in those doors!!! :D
I love it up there Tone. The views of Edinburgh and beyond are spectacular. Here on the outskirts of Sunderland we have a similar monument, Penshaw Monument, which was actually finished! It too gives awesome 360 views of Wearside, Tyneside and Durham. A great place to walk your dogs too 😊 www.nationaltrust.org.uk/penshaw-monument
The builder only had 12 pillars in his back garden, from a pergola he was going to build but he got the spacing wrong, hence the reason they stopped. His wife wasn't happy, she ended up with a pop up gazebo.
Your video is great . My husband and I just got back from the rental flat for salad 🥗 pint 🍻 and meat pasty! After Arthur SEAT hike mountain ⛰️ ha ha we are quite bit tired… yet wanted ro go to top of this acropolis. The weather was sunny 🌞 tank top and light breeze just delightful!! Hello, got your message. Unfortunately it’s not a great time. Apart from work I have other commitments I have to keep. Hope you have a great visit back to your old stomping grounds.
Interesting that Sir Walter Scott was one of the financiers of this monument. He had terrible money troubles in his last years due to the collapse of his publishers around 1826. He was under pressure to write more books to pay the bills and his health suffered. He died of a stroke 3 years after the works on this monument had stopped. A sad end to his life. I've been to his home at Abbotsford, it's beautiful but he can't have enjoyed it much in those stressful last years.
