That dying guardswomen experienced a miracle, Space Marines are seen by humans as literal angels. So when Primus knelt beside and placed his hand on her it was basically an equivalent to an angel descending from heaven and telling her to pass in peace, your jobs done, join the Emperor side.

When Grimaldus left Helsreach he took with him a piece of the broken altar from the temple as well as the bowl when he was blessed by the sister. He has two servators that carry them in battle; Grimaldus took them to remember all those that fought at Helsreach & that still a part of the temple remained.

This is an animated book! :) it was a novel first, by Aaron Demski-Bowden, then they did an audiobook version, and a fan made this animation using the voice acting and some of the narration from the audiobook! 😮

I'm sure others would've pointed it out but the scene where Primus is with the dying Guardswoman at 59:14... It has such weight because he belittles the Guard and the "normal" humans he sees as insignificant "mere mortals". Yet he has just seen the mortals courage and valour, defending against a huge day of slaughter and the first wave of Orks. From his perspective she is struggling still, fighting for life while it is beyond saving. From her perspective it's pure fear and pain and agony of death, but as she lay there dying, one of the Emperor's Space Marines arrives an looks at her - a literal Demi-God of War, an "Angel" of her God-Emperor she believes in looks down, looks directly at her and KNEELS BESIDE HER. He then, silently holds a hand above her and silently stands vigil over her death. To Primus it may be just a curiosity/gesture - to her it's literally having a Demi-God say "You've done well. You've done your duty. It is time to let go. Do not struggle on through pain, through suffering. Go in peace." And then she lets death take her under her God's Angel's vigil.

The speech on the wall moves me to tears, even after years. God Helsreach is a fucking masterpiece of writing.

Grimaldus yelling a titan back to war is by far my favourite scene from this movie. It's just so badass. This comparable ''little'' guy just not accepting the death of Zaha and his willpower gave her the strenght to continue walking. 👌

The quality/amount of color in Helsreach mirrors Grimaldus's emotional state. At the beginning of the story, Grimaldus is struggling with depression and survivors guilt and so the animation is very black and white. As the story progresses and he begins to move past his guilt, the animation gains clarity and color is introduced. By the climax, Grimaldus has come to terms with his grief and the animation reflects this; but then his squad is killed in front of him, the depression and survivors guilt returnand the animation returns to back and white to showcase this. I prefer the interpretation of the general mood of the final, heart-wrenching last stand within the temple in the Helsreach fan-made movie than the novel. In the novel, in true Templar fashion, there's almost a sort of insane levity, what with Artarion laughing his final words and Grimaldus echoing that. I can see why people would approve of either interpretation, but I prefer the movie's. The tone is far more somber and heart-breaking, as it should be, I think. The Black Templars are known for the incredible zealotry that most rears its head in moments that would make most consider a retreat. Their attrition rates are atrociously high. Dying gloriously on the field of battle, against overwhelming odds is seen as the highest honor...as it should be. I feel sometimes it's portrayed with almost too much levity, though. The Helsreach movie did it right; it showed us something far more somber. It showed us that even amongst warriors who see a violent death as an inevitability, who feel no fear, who seek to burn twice as brightly still experience the pain of loss...and it is crushing. Not only that, the deaths of squad Grimaldus all showed their true, beautiful and terribly honest, colors at the end. Nero, a competent apothecary and warrior no doubt, was far more prone to outbursts of emotion, especially grief. Amongst Templars, one might call him soft...I think he was simply the most human. Within meek, gentle Nerovar beat the heart of defiance; as he was hoisted onto a spear by his midriff, he pulled himself down lower upon the spear whilst still being impaled...and for what purpose? So that, in a final act of defiance and raw courage, he could stab his killer and take him down with him. In his final moments, we see gentle Nero shine brighter than all as a true warrior. For such a death Bell of Lost Souls upon Holly Terra will rang and the Emperor drop a single tear, embracing another soul of His finest. Priamus was young, proud, haughty, and immensely talented. Quick to anger, quick to misinterpret. Proud to a fault, he refused to show weakness; arrogance was his default trait, though it did not come from a place of malice. In his final moments, the overwhelming pain of missing a limb, amongst a myriad of other injuries, finally showed in his voice. It was heart-wrenching. "They're bringing the temple down!" is said with such desperation, yet he continues to fight. The implacable pain of witnessing the brutalizing of his battle-brother Nerovar and the futility of trying to save him is palpable in his delivery when he cries "Nero!" Not least though, is when Priamus, finally succumbing to fatigue, takes a blow across his face and falls to his knees. In his final moments, proud and boastful Priamus looks towards his brother-chaplain and says "Grimaldus...brother." with such pain and trembling voice, the rest of the scene I watched through blurred vision. In his final moments, despite being a zealous Templar, despite knowing he would die violently, despite a lifetime of battle, despite knowing that his death in glorious battle would earn him a place beside the Emperor of mankind...he wished only for the comfort and presence of one of his brothers. He did so much, yet so little. He didn't want to die alone. None shall find him wanting. Artarion...dependable, sturdy Artarion. I don't have nearly as much to say, but it doesn't soften the blow any less. Banner bearer of Squad Grimaldus. Stalwart. Gruff. A pillar of strength, to be sure. In his final moment, before decapitation, he looked towards his brother, Grimaldus, and somberly said goodbye. He was going towards the Emperor's light, he was saved...his honor and his memory intact. He was to die a warrior's glorious death against impossible odds; this is akin to the holy grail, practically, for Black Templars. Yet, still, in his final moments, he laments having to be separated in life from his brother. The sheer weight of loss sets itself upon him so solidly, he cannot hide it when he says "Goodbye, brother." Perhaps he knew. Perhaps he knew that he alone would die and Grimaldus would live. Maybe his deep, audible pain was in knowing, in feeling that somehow Grimaldus would live. That wherever Artarion was going now, in the afterlife, Grimaldus will not follow...not for an agonizingly long time. And so he grieved because he would miss his brother, simply put, and Grimaldus would miss him. How soberingly human. Were I Grimaldus, I don't think I would have wanted to survive, either. The pain of living through that may very well dwarf whatever temporary pain he would have felt from death. The final guilt of living, he must bear it like a mantle, like a scar on his heart - until the Emperor call his soul too. "The Hero of Helsreach...as if there was only one." - none could say better. P. S. 2:25:48 Even though I've watched Helsreach about twenty times already (with other reactors), I always share a tear, in the same place as you here. You shouldn't be ashamed of sincere tears at such dramatic moments. It shows that you have empathic soul and kind heart. Thank you for such great reaction. I recognize it, and try to think of something humorous with which to reply. Nothing surfaces in my mind. 'Were you not injured at all?' He shrugs. 'I had a headache. But then it went away.' This makes me smile. 'Did you meet the fat priest?' he asks. 'Did you know him?' 'I confess, I do not recall anyone by that name or description.' 'He was a good man. You would have liked him. Very brave. He did not die in the battle. He was with the civilians. But he died two weeks after, from a problem with his heart. Ayah, that is unfair, I think. To live through the end and die at the new beginning? Not so fair, I am thinking.' There is a twisted poetry to that. I would like to speak words that comfort him. I would like to tell him that I admire his courage, and that his world will survive this war. I want to speak with the ease Artarion would have done, and thank this soldier for standing with us when so many others ran. He honored us all in that moment, as did the dying dockmaster, the prioress, and every other soul that faded from life on the night only I survived. But I say nothing.

21:43 on the contrary, that "guy" is anything but important. He is a Servitor. A menial. A lobotomized criminal serving his eternal sentence or an artificially born human in service of the Imperium as slave labor. In rare cases, servitors maintain some semblance of consciousness and are forcrd to watch in horror as their bodies rot and move outside their will. Suffice to say, though they have mouths they cannot scream.

There is another 40k animation. An animated version of one of the short stories, called The Last Church. It's something completely different, but might be interesting, at least for checking it for yourself.

This guardswoman had a near mythical demigod there to recognize her sacrifice and comfort her in her final moments as a manifestation of her God Emperor. Additionally, it broke Primus' conception that these mere humans were useless and unworthy of recognition. He saw that these humans were as willing to fight and die as he was even without gene augmentations and power armor.

This guy always writes a fan story (or reads existing lore striate from the books) before further explaining how it all works. The man is also one talented VA. As for what you watched, I'd say almost every viewer has shed a tear or two (myself included) so don't feel too bad.

Shadow Wolves is a chapter from de Imperial Fists only mentioned in the battle for Helsreach, the reason behind that is because Aaron Dembski-Bowden's wife was starting to read about Wh40k and fell in love with the Luna Wolves (Son's of Horus / Black Legion) becasue they were cool and loyal. So Aaron when he wrote this book "Helsreach", he put his wife's hombrew chapter in the book, aint that cute ?.

At 1:14:09 they are talking about how the Orks launched an asteroid at a Hive City and wiped it off the map and that dust cloud storm was racing across the landscape from the impact.

You seemed a bit perplexed by the master of the forge, Jurisian. He is a techmarine of his chapter. Techmarines differ from normal marines, by being inducted into the cult of the machine by the mechanicus, as well as being a brother sworn to his chapter. That's why he's so cyborgy. :)

I've lost count how many times i have watched that movie, a cinematic and artistic masterpiece.

I noticed the first time I watched it, when Primus stands over the dying soldier coughing up blood as she just stares up at him, suddenly the color comes in to the production halfway through the movie in a kind of golden sunrise way. That was such amazing touch of art in directing in my opinion(s).

At 24:25, that is called a servo skull. Its basically a skull of a loyal imperium servant, made into an information drone. They carry messages, tactical information and the like, usually for military forces.

1:118:24- That wasn't a nuke, it was a Rok which had completely destroyed Hades Hive and what you saw was essentially the shockwave of the impact. As for the guy who slammed his claw, that was Commissar Yarrick who is furious that his nemesis Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka had destroyed the hive city where he had defeated the Warboss in the Second War for Armageddon, which was an Ork version of a big F%*& YOU moment.

One of my favorite movies for sure, we all cried at the end ❤ The director/animator Richard used the narration from the audiobook ( that's why like 90% of the voices are from a single guy) and worked on it for almost two years, releasing it episodically. That's why the animation changes (everyone says is about Grimaldus state of mind but i don't recall the animator claiming that at any point) Ps: the audiobook is 10hs and it is in my top 3 books for sure, Aaron demski bowden has some major talent writing SciFi

It's hard to not get hyped when you see Stormherald.

I like to think that the clarity of the animation is a representation of how much clarity Grimaldus has towards his purpose both in defense of Helsreach and in a broader sense with himself. I also think it plays into time, like the past and the future are less clear and so is the present if he's living in the past or the future. The animations are most clear in scenes when he's both present in the now and clear of purpose. I think it's the lesson High Marshal Helbrecht was trying to teach him. To be clear and fully committed to one's duty in the present.

The most important thing to remember about space marines. They may carry kind eyes, soft voices, and gentle hands. But for them, the cause of war is the greatest of all. Never take the measured kindness of an astartes for granted. For it carries the hidden contempt within each one.

Orks are often comedic in 40k but honesty they’re really terrifying.

That pre-battle speech by Grimaldus to the Steel Legion was epic. Just a testament to Aaron Dembski-Bowden's writing in the novel (the narration is taken from the Audible audiobook, as Grimaldus is voiced by Jonathan Keeble).

It seriously had me in my feelings watching you experience this beautiful, tragic epic for the first time. I reacted very much the same way, and it is so amazing to see someone else felt this as deeply.🤘🏾❤️❤️❤️❤️

Helsreach was originally just a novel, but a fan animator put it to animation which is what you're watching now. He has done official work for Games Workshop since then for Warhammer Community involving the Blood Angels.

Grimaldus is one of my favorite characters. You should watch a youtube video about him, like Majorkills. Grimaldus in another story tries to save a space marine of another chapter from endless waves of orks. As this space marine tried to tell the truth of horrible stuff inquisition did. So the inquisition tried to kill this space marine who was the last of his brothers by lurring a lot of orks to him, but the legend Grimaldus would have none of it and basically goes against the inquistion to save him.

this is one of the best things about warhammer, when you look at what happens its so over the top but the story just rolls with it and is so well written that it becomes genuenly good, heartbreaking, serious, funny and epic without loosing its over the top nature, and this movie is an incredibly good example of that.

I was never a full space marine fan myself, but, having seen grimaldus fight with his brothers, watch him fight tooth and nail beside his black templars, I think the reclusiarch and his original retinue will take a place in my heart for a long time

Something that I don't think get mentioned enough is that true AI is outlawed in the Imperium. This hasn't stopped the Adeptus Mechanicus though, for example the Titan has a sort of feral AI but this get's explained away as a "Machine Spirit" to outsiders. It's why Titan require a human pilot to control this feral AI but eventually it will overpower their mind and consume them, resulting in brain death.

The introduction to Storm Herald as it approaches Grimaldus will never be anything less than epic.

Grimaldus never fought alongside a squad anymore. He fights alone, because dying is nowhere near to lost your brothers all over again.

in regards to your comment about this being like an animation of a book (31:00), that's actually exactly what this is. The book is amazing and the voice acting is directly from the audiobook version (though I think some parts are cut out), this movie does the book justice though.

Blood and Fire is the novella length sequel to Helsreach. It is awesome as well (but not as good as this) and not in movie form though :( but you can find a reading of the whole story on YT :) Perhaps not so much reaction video content but at least for you to listen to on your own. Grimaldus is back on Armageddon and needs to help right a wrong!! I promise you will enjoy it. Also would like to say, you would LOVE the full length (13 hours) Helsreach audiobook even more than you loved this very, very, edited down version. Sooooo much is obviously cut out to make this movie and sooo much of it sheds so much more light on things and would make more things in this movie make sense, or at least connect a lot of dots. This movie is also the perfect example of why so many people love WH 40k and its lore. Its not just blood and guts (which is actually a lot of WH LOL) but man, the characters, stories, writing and so many things are so deep and captivating and inspiring and heat breaking. In the grim dark future, there is only war! Side note you might find interesting, after what Grimaldus accomplished on Armageddon, you can say a religious movement spawned from him and his deeds and began spreading off world even.. Grimaldus is hands down my favorite 40K individual and like perhaps many others, this movie was my gateway into the WH lore, rabbit hole. Aaron Dembski-Bowden is perhaps the best author to write for WH IMO..

It's very hard to get the scale of wh40k right The preparation for the siege does a good job, just how much is listed off makes it clear how much they have to factor in to just the overview Vraks chapter 1 also shows the scale super well

I've watched this film several times. It was a pleasure, watching it again with your reaction to it.

The animation improvement is because the animator made this over a long period and released it originally in short episodes. Over time his skills improved and that is reflected in the film.

A great reaction to a brilliant piece of art. But GW has been going longer than 30 years. I started collecting in '89. Feth, I even found an OLD 2nd edition Arbites model the other day! So my ONLY problem going into this film for the first time was I already knew the basic story. It'd been GW lore for a few years. But more than a few things have changed in the Black Templar's lore over the years. A channel called Baldermort has done a great piece on them. But have a look around. & I'd advise that the longer the video, the more changes you'll get told about. But they are better than ever! Helsreach is an absolute masterpiece and it is always heart crushing to see a worthy Templar die in battle.. not to mention the fall of Zaha and her Titan. Such a powerful, earth shattering weapon falling to such a crude machination only because it was already heavily weakened and Zaha had wrestled with the Machine Spirit for far too long rendering it far than optimal on top of the damage sustained by prolonged battle. Andrej is our regular human gateway into the setting and he is such a beacon of light and human touches. It thus greatly saddens me to bring the most dire of news about him. He survives.. and ends up on the Eternal Crusader as she leaves orbit. Poor man loses his love, has a terrible headache, is listed dead later and then is sent on an eternal crusade unwillingly when all he wanted was to get paid. At least from what I can read about him on the fan lexicanum. Though I suppose that also means he might have more roles alongside the Black Templars and Grimaldus in particular. The one human that has managed to make a Black Templar Chaplain, Reclusiarch no less, smile.
