When the Japanese army took control of Kaifeng in June of 1938, they harassed Taylor and his wife for protecting over 1,000 women in the Songmen sub-district of Kaifeng. Consequently, the Taylors travelled to Yantai to reunite with their family members and buy a sea passage back to America. Just at that time, however, they received a plea from the northwest part of China. They decided to cancel their tickets and move further inland to share in the hardships of the Chinese people.
