As a Hungarian born in the territory lost to Romania after WW1... Yes, fair or not fair, this is how history works. You lose a war, your land might get taken. The Ottoman Empire lost WW1 and then the Arabs lost in 1948. Hungary also lost WW1 and got a far, FAR worse deal than the Arabs did. Now, imagine if we kept attacking our neighbours, decades after the national trauma. Imagine not moving on, but rather destroying our present and future. Hell, imagine if Romania suddenly decided that they grant Székelyföld (Szekler Land, a part of East Transylvania with almost 100% Hungarian population) autonomy, then the people there immediately turned around and voted in a terrorist government whose goal is to destroy Romania, and started a war. That would be the dumbest shit ever, right? Arabs or "Palestinians" are the worst losers and act like the sole vicstims of history when there have been much more severe cases. Even in their own neighbourhood, the Kurds were betrayed by everyone and still have no state, and the Armenians were also genocided and only have a small land as their country, surrounded by hostile nations.

Interestingly, the segment of population in both Hungary and that part of Romania was significantly Jewish. Pogroms against Jewish villages post WW1 was common in Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Moldova and an American Jewish organization, The Joint Distribution Committee (commonly known in the Jewish world as "The Joint") lobbied all the leaders (and the nascent League of Nations) to protect their Jewish communities as citizens. We all know the long term results of that.

I used to work as an English teacher in Morocco. I had 2 lovely students in their 20s who were learning English before joining their husbands in the USA. One day we were talking about famous people and I mentioned Hitler, in passing, as an example of a famous person. One of the young ladies smiled and said, "Teacher, we love Hitler!" I was so taken aback I asked her why. Still with a sweet smile (and fully expecting me to agree with her) she said, "Because Teacher he killed all the Jews." Took me a moment or 2 to continue the lesson as I just stood there blinking, speechless. Such casual, unthinking racism.... from two otherwise delightful people. So weird. But so normal for the Muslim Arab mindset.,

So do you think they come out the womb like this? I am also a teacher and i also teach alot of refugee's from Morocco. I totally agree that there is a problem with antisemitism in that community. But to not think of any reasons why is absurd and foolish. In my experience the Palestinian struggle is something very close to their hearth. The fact that this injustice has lasted for almost 100 years makes people radical because the 'moral' west can't seem to call this injustice out. The day that Israel admits to it's crimes and inhumanity is the day those Mocroccon kids can learn to unhate. Hate and injustice breeds hate, people are not born with that hate.
@deskset7436
@deskset7436 2 месяца назад
@@thomasemmers3930 But there are many injustices in the Arab and Muslim world that have lasted more than 100 years. The oppression of the indigenous black Sudanese by the Arab Sudanese which lead to the most recently partitioned nation - South Sudan. The oppression of the Uighurs by China. The oppression of Hindus and Christians in Pakistan and for that matter the oppression of Muslims in India. The oppression of Sunnis in Iraq and of Shia in Saudi. The lack of democracy and civil rights throughout the Arab world. Why is the injustice of Palestine so particularly close to their hearts, rather than the injustices of Morocco? It's because hatred of the outsider Jews and the belief that Jews are European colonialists UNITES the Arab and Muslim world. Everyone wants to feel unity around a cause. Everyone enjoys pointing to some outsiders rather than dealing with the problems they themselves can take responsibility for. The United States offered that same feeling of unity to white settlers because they were all free AMERICAN, in contrast to enslaved black people and colonized natives. It's a seductive and desirable feeling - that feeling of unity - but it always requires someone to be outside the unity. Anti-Semitism isn't based on how Jews behave - it's based on the fundamental racist need to unify against a hated outsider rather than to address your own problems.

Great video. It, however, does leave out the false Arab narrative that the Holy Land had a reasonably large population of Arabs prior to the first Zionist settlement (1882). In fact, many Western visitors to that region prior to 1882 describe a land that was desolate and deserted with practically no vegetation and very few inhabitants outside of the towns that were small and shabby. Most of the privately-held land was in the hands of a few extremely wealthy Arab owners that lived outside of that territory in cities like Cairo, Beirut and Damascus. They offered to the Jews the worst of those lands to buy at exorbitant prices. But the Jews ended up buying 90,000 acres and turned them into productive farmlands. This was something totally outside of the Arab mindset. (To date the Israelis have planted 250,000,000 trees.) Once the Arabs from neighboring countries saw the prosperity the Jews were created they began mass migrating into that region.

So they didn't even want it as a state! This is not about love of life for their people. It is about lust for death of Jews. And since their leader emphasized on an interview right after Oct. 7 that they will keep doing such attacks "again and again" those insisting on "peace! no war" are barking up the wrong tree when they refuse to accept that this hate is there and unrelenting no matter what Israel does.

Israeli PM Ehud Barak offered Palestinian Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat a state with the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and even East Jerusalem, with the caveat that Israeli forces would remain at the Western Wall (Judaism's holiest site) to protect Jewish worshippers, and some Jewish neighborhoods within East Jerusalem would be annexed by Israel. Israel was ready and willing, but Yasser Arafat and the Palestinians were not. In the autobiography _My Life,_ Bill Clinton, the US president who was overseeing the negotiations, claims that Yasser Arafat called him a "great man," and he responded with "I am not a great man, I am a failure, and you made me one." Dennis Ross, a key negotiator at the summit, claims in the book _The Missing Peace_ that Arafat was unwilling to sign any deal that didn't confer to the maximum Palestinian demands, including a right of return for Palestinians that would turn it into a one-state solution when the summit was supposed to be for a two-state solution.
@adhuna1009
@adhuna1009 4 месяца назад
first of all, absolutely nothing was in writing, which is weird for such an important matter, so you have conflicting accounts to this day. the following from wiki (which you seem to have missed when putting the blame entirely on Arafat): Robert Malley, part of the Clinton administration and present at the summit, wrote to dispel three "myths" regarding the summit's failure. First myth, Malley says, was "Camp David was an ideal test of Mr. Arafat's intentions". Malley recalls that Arafat didn't think that Israeli and Palestinian diplomats had sufficiently narrowed issues in preparation for the summit and that the Summit happened at a "low point" in the relations between Arafat and Barak. The second myth was "Israel's offer met most if not all of the Palestinians' legitimate aspirations". According to Malley, Arafat was told that Israel would not only retain sovereignty over some Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem, but Haram al Sharif too, and Arafat was also asked to accept an unfavorable 9-to-1 ratio in land swaps. The third myth was that "The Palestinians made no concession of their own". Malley pointed out that the Palestinians starting position was at the 1967 borders, but they were ready to give up Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, and parts of the West Bank with Israeli settlements. Further, the Palestinians were willing to implement the right of return in a way that guaranteed Israel's demographic interests. He argues that Arafat was far more compromising in his negotiations with Israel than Anwar el-Sadat or King Hussein of Jordan had been when they negotiated with Israel. Shlomo Ben-Ami, then Israel's Minister of Foreign Relations who participated in the talks, stated that the Palestinians wanted the immediate withdrawal of the Israelis from the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, and only subsequently the Palestinian authority would dismantle the Palestinian organizations. The Israeli response was "we can't accept the demand for a return to the borders of June 1967 as a pre-condition for the negotiation." In 2006, Shlomo Ben-Ami stated on Democracy Now! that "Camp David was not the missed opportunity for the Palestinians, and *if I were a Palestinian I would have rejected Camp David, as well*. This is something I put in the book. But Taba is the problem. The Clinton parameters are the problem" referring to his 2001 book Scars of War, Wounds of Peace: The Israeli-Arab Tragedy. Norman Finkelstein published an article in the winter 2007 issue of Journal of Palestine Studies, excerpting from his longer essay called Subordinating Palestinian Rights to Israeli "Needs". The abstract for the article states: "In particular, it examines the assumptions informing Ross’s account of what happened during the negotiations and why, and the distortions that spring from these assumptions. Judged from the perspective of Palestinians' and Israelis' respective rights under international law, all the concessions at Camp David came from the Palestinian side, none from the Israeli side."@@jagnestormskull3178

My husband's family came to the Tel-Aviv area in 1912 from Aden Yemen on camels. They arrived to sand dunes and empty land and slowly started to build their lives in Israel, like many other Jews from Arabic countries. Oren often illustrates these histories very clearly and with an academic knowledge of how modern day Israel evolved. This is important background that often falls on deaf ears. People feel emboldened to openly hate Israelis and Jews in general. They would prefer an image of a meek impoverished little grandmother begging for a scrap of bread as the Jew they will accept. Maybe. What they hate are strong highly creative intelligent people who will fight to the death to protect their land and people. The haters would admire those traits and qualities in any other nation...just not Israel.

Hello Oren. Your videos have been very helpful to me in gaining a grasp of the historical dimensions of this conflict. As reference points, they sent me in the direction of other sources, documentaries, interviews and autobiographies in order to go deeper. Because my impulse was to side with Israel when so many appeared to be ignoring or denying their pain from Oct 7th, it helped greatly to learn the brutal intentions of Hamas and how this can't be dissociated from the spread (even appeal) of radical Islam in the West. But as the months have passed and the civilian casualties steadily increased in Gaza, I found myself having to time and again react in anger -- get out of the way, or they had it coming -- basically any form of squashing the empathy. After all, hadn't ALL the pro-Palestine protesters immediately suspended empathy towards the slaughtered/kidnapped of Oct 7th, or their families? And won't most of them shout now, "There's no comparison, just look at the numbers on each side!".... But here's the thing. That suspension of empathy? It's directly comparable no matter the numbers. It's the thing that gives you the impetus to strike the retaliatory blow. It's the thing that slowly grows from a "necessity" (in the face of immediate threat) to a comfortable habit long afterwards. And then into an ugly black festering unknown thing within you. This week (as of Feb 12 2024), we are at a crossroads. One could say that more correctly Israel is at a crossroads, but if Israel is then we all are. Why this week? Because of Rafah. Because of the fact that now all those 1.5 million civilians are now concentrated down in the southernmost portion of the Gaza strip, or rather what's left of them. Their options of "getting out of the way" are extremely limited at best. But what's different? Isn't it still vital that Hamas be destroyed? Isn't Hamas still responsible for the deaths by using civilians and civilian infrastructure as human shields and command centers? Let's say for argument that's all still true. So the IDF has no recourse but to double down and hit Rafah hard. Finish the job... Except that's not their only recourse is it? Netanyahu claims he's directed the armed forces to draw up a plan for evacuation of the the civilians. But the very next day the first bombings began amid a hostage rescue operation. I mean, look my point is that there is a very narrow time window here for any sort of bona fide effort on the part of the IDF to provide protection for even a portion of the civilians. You can debate there are no Gazan civilians, they are all part of Hamas; but that sounds a lot like "There are no innocents" prior to a suicide bombing. They _are_ civilians, if only to the extent they are unarmed and desperately trying to stay alive. What their intentions are for the future is on them. But what Israel's intentions are for the here & now -- that's on Israel. Benjamin Netanyahu indicated there may be some nebulous "areas in the north" that they could "clear" for the civilians to evacuate to. Ah, no. That's a definite death trap going back up into the combat zones. Tunnels below, no way to secure the entire perimeter, no way to effectively provide any rations, water or medicines without them getting to Hamas, which means they won't get any. What am I missing? Look where Rafa is! You're the tour-guide guy. You must have a pretty good idea of the layout of that southern section. For someone far away like me who can only rely on images from Google maps, and logic, I see a huge area right along the southeast border of the Gaza strip, just north of the Kerem Shalom check-point. It even has lots of field areas, no buildings, perfect for a temporary tent city refuge. The border wall would secure nearly 1/2 the perimeter while Kerem Shalom which Israel controls, could provide access for food, water and medicines, which _finally_ could be offered without fear of it falling into the hands of Hamas fighters. It would take some resources away from the immediate military objective, yes. But it would give validity, or at least honor, to the military objective. Because if the _real_ objective is to wipe these people off the map and then rebuilt Jewish settlements on top of their ashes, then no amount of historical analysis is going to save Israel from complete condemnation by both its enemies and its former allies. (I'm thinking of Eqypt right now). And that will endanger everybody, not just Israel. I honestly think that, if 2 days from now we are looking at a full scale mobilization against Hamas in Rafah, in the absence of any concrete plan for the civilians, then it's game over. Sure it will play itself out, but the chance to do it differently is going to disappear within days at most. If you think my idea of the southeast corner as a temporary haven is flawed, please tell me why.

Israel has no intention for its people to live in Gaza. Israel could have killed many more civilians, if that was their intention. Conservative Jews elected Netanyahu as prime minister and because of their violent nature keep Israel in a constant state of war. Liberal Jews are secular too, and the ones who believe Palestinians should have equal rights and a greater measure of self-determination. Fanatical Jews are a smaller group of settlers in the West Bank, are unpopular and want to push the Palestinians out of their God given land. Finally, she says the crazy religious Jews are the smallest group, also unpopular with many, don't serve in the military and contribute little to the state of Israel. That is the reason the whole world focuses on such a local conflict, magnifying it instead of shading light on other, much larger conflicts, with millions of casualties. Politicians and leaders don't really want to DO anything beyond what's urgent and relevant to their survival. They are not naïve. It is easier to put pressure on a tiny persecuted democracy than on countries representing 1.7 Muslims. They also know everything Oren is saying here, so they know Israel has 2 options: give up and be wiped out, or resist the pressure, which in turn would bring about the joy of additional endless pressure and condemnation. @@unom8 Likud likes to quote the bible. If you would like to know the original of this, it is Exodus 23:31 "31 And I will set your [a]bounds from the Red Sea to the sea, Philistia, and from the desert to the [b]River. For I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out before you." So it is indeed a biblical phrase and it referred to the driving out of the Canaanites before the Israelite invaders. And there are right wing extremists who see these days as a repeat of Joshua, in which the biblical conquest was accomplished. I do not think many Israelis dream of that now. However, the Palestinians do see it meaning all of Israel - including Haifa, Netanya, Herzliya, Tiberias, Rison le Tzion, Tel Aviv - all part of Palestine, and all devoid of Jews. There is no territory controlled by the Palestinians where Jews are even permitted to live, so that would mean the death or exile of nine million people. @@insideoutsideupsidedown2218 No need for that kind of pedantry. That didn't work so well in the Balkans, or the Caribbean, or South America, and was a complete disaster in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are just a lot of people in the world who, if you give them the vote, will vote for different forms of authoritarianism, and that's not a cultural thing that can be changed overnight. Hey Oren and @MrZimmmy Thank you for this amazing historical overview. You are absoutly right about why we do not yet have peace and how carful Jews have to be in this conflict. But I think you overlooked a very important fact that could entirely change the outlook for our future. I am refering to the fact that 2 miliion palestinians are living relatively peacfully in Israel today. (That is - 1 in every 5 Israeli citizens is Palestinian). And despite the fact that that politicians in power have created a huge set back in terms of racism and enequlity towards out palestinian citizens. Still for 75 years- as equality and their opportunity to fourish grew - so did the peice between us. You can see this in our mixed mediclal teams, farmacys, planning departmnets, and so on. In other words Golda Meir’s vision of Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim children learning and living peacefully with their Jewish neighbors - has infact become a reality! So much so that you didn't even think of mentioning it in your video :) So I urge you - and anyone reading this - Just take a few minutes to look for some of the amazing stories we have heard sincre Oct 7th about Beduins who risked their lives to rescue Jews, about Muslims who volenteered to help refugies or to cook for soldiers. Look at this huge ray of Hope and tell me what are the conditions that created this miracle and what do we need to do so it will grow and change our regeon into the paradice it aut to be. Our history tells us different stories and teaches us many lessons. Lessons of war and violence and lessons of peace, cooperation and hope. I challenge you to make your next movie about what we can learn from the lessons of peace - and what we can do to make it grow. P.S. - Yes there is way too much violence built in to parts of the the muslim world. We need to be carful of it. But: a) religions do change - just as the jewish relgion did. thought if you follow the bible you learn that it was quite brutal in the past -calling for stoning disobediant women to death, and other forms of violence that are unheared of today - as we evleved into a religion that cherishes life. b) don't foget that just 80 years ago Jews were brutaly whiped out by Christians - not Muslims....

Israel pulling out of Gaza was not an altruistic move and Oren is being a little disingenuous about it here. The Israelis said openly at the time that withdrawing from Gaza was about maintaining a Jewish majority state, and was actually designed to halt the "peace process," which was always geared toward creating a Palestinian state. The Israelis recognized that the Palestinian population was going to keep growing exponentially, and so they sacrificed territory for security. It wasn't about giving Palestinians anything. I'm not faulting Israel for that, but the "disengagement" from Gaza is often presented as the Israelis being magnanimous, when it was quite the opposite.
