Great fun Walt, on my LDG tuners I disable full auto mode to stop it trying to retune mid QSO - brilliant tuners though :)

Hi Walt, Was wondering if you've ever tried using ladder line for the legs of the dipole instead of stranded wire. My understanding you can shorten it about 20 to 30% by doing so
@COASTALWAVESWIRES

Hi Pat, I’ve heard that as well but have never tried it.

@@COASTALWAVESWIRES i have a linear loaded doublet that I use at home and it works well for local NVIS and also national contacts as well. It has a 25' 450-ohm ladder line as the feeder and also for the dipole legs legs - i added a third wire to the legs by weaving a #14 gauge insulated wire in and out of the windows - legs are only 16 feet on each leg, and able to talk 80-10 w a tuner

Hey man I'm brand new to ham radio. Setting up my rigs now. Two cheap vhf/uhf mobile rigs to simplex with my dad while hunting and some analog repeater use. My pota/sota/base station is the xiegu G90. Anyway I am building a simple 10 m dipole as my first antenna but would like to build a multiband antenna that isn't too hard to wrap my mind around. This stuff doesn't come easy for me. I do have a good antenna analyzer and all the necessary test equipment. Could you recommend a build to me? Not sure if a doublet is too difficult to learn how to set up and analyze or if I should go with an efhw or something else. I have 8 acres and the antenna is going to stay on my roof or strung around my yard until it stops working so size and mobility isn't a issue. Thanks man I love your videos. Cant wait to go to SF bay and try some of that salt water action. God bless - K06DFS

Thanks for the kind words! I would absolutely put up an End Fed Half Wave, it’s the easiest and most efficient multiband antenna to get started with. A 65’ long wire connected to a 49:1 unun and some coax and you’re cooking. You can put it up as a flat top, slope it or experiment with different configurations and see what works best. It’s at the top of my list for multiband permanent installation antennas is you have the space. 73, Walt

Walt, love the channel. It's really interesting to see different antennas tried in different ways in different locations....It's different...lol. This one worked better than I was expecting. I've never been a huge fan of the G5RV, but they do work and many people like them. Looking forward to future videos with other antennas. Your channel is so much better than the "This antenna company sent an antenna for free channels. Let's set it up. Hey, it works great, look, I made a few contacts with 10 over 9 stations. You can buy one at...." There is a word for people who do these kinds of videos. 73 Walt, keep up the great content !

Hello , manage to perform some test with adjustments > The dipole with a total lenght 7.85m and ladder line 3m i manage to achieve very good results comparing to my ENDFED (23m long) and my Random long wire (30m long) . Receive signals are almost identical. My N7DCC tuner can tune the antenna without any problem 20,17,15,12 and 10m bands.. i am using a 1/1 current balun. This antenna will be converted as a Beam antenna with reflectors at the rear (5 wire Reflectors) to cover 20,17,15,12 and 10m bands. many thanks for your sharing . when done i will populate all information on my Website. 73s

Nice, some of my POTA locations do not have much of antenna setup options, that ground mount looks great for my QRPGuys 3-band 40-20M vertical when there are no trees, and want to keep the antenna away from folks parking nearby to keep from tripping over the wires. An Inverted-V from two Hamsticks or Sharksticks might be a good option for that portable setup as well. Thanks for the ideas! 72 es 73, Davey - KU9L

Experiencia docet my friend. I'll stick with running the DX70 into my PREDator though. I've been doing a lot of 15m lately and getting really great results from "short hop" stuff here in the states (Kentucky, NC, and some New England) to Europe, Hawaii and even Russia this morning. I've been waiting for you to head back to Poland because getting into Virginia from here is tough. I'll be looking for you. KC3UVF

Nice one Walt! Experimentation is the essence of Ham radio. Two things, I don't see any choke or 1:1 balun in the antenna kit, maybe you were getting some RF back to the radio that was causing your audio issues. Also, I guess you could say that the ladder line in the G5RV is being used in lieu of a transformer to match or improve the impedance of the antenna to 50 ohms. Following that line of thought, I wonder if you could use ladder line instead of the 4:1 unun on your favorite Rybakov antenna. Or maybe use the ladder line to feed a random wire vertical with an equal-length raised counterpoise, giving you something that is a little easier to deploy. Who knows! Maybe I'll fiddle with that in the back yard one day. 73
@COASTALWAVESWIRES
@COASTALWAVESWIRES Год назад
Thanks Dan, yes I was getting some RF back and needed a choke for sure. Lesson learned there. I'll have to look into the ladder line and the Rybakov. All the best and 73!

Enjoyed it. I have a couple of Tim's antennas as well. At my request, he customized them for the CW portion of the band for each antenna, which is fantastic service in my opinion, and the build quality is great. I saw a video recently where someone asked, "Is that a Tim Ortiz?" You know you are doing great work when your products are known by your name. I lived out there for years when I was a squid at NAS Oceana. My wife and I enjoyed visiting the shops and restaurants around Portsmouth harbor, especially during the holidays. I miss the area a lot.
