Film-maker Simon Glass explores his family history and tells the story of the Yorkshire Jews in the early 20th century. Thousands of migrants arrived by boat on the east coast of England and lived in a run-down slum area of Leeds known as the Leylands. Simon discovers stories of hardship and anti-Semitism, but also success and progress as many Jews moved out of the Leylands to the more affluent suburbs. He also travels to eastern Europe where he makes a shocking discovery about what happened to his relatives who did not migrate to Britain.

I've just discovered your channel and I'm really enjoying going through your videos that I have watched so far to learn more about our important Jewish settlers/migrants back then who have helped to shape British history in very positive ways. My grandad was an officer in WW2 and I was brought up by my grandma and taught very early on to respect Jewish people, and also may I add, taught about the holocaust before I learned that in school. In fact my grandad because of his high ranking was offered the chance to relocate after the war to Germany to help rebuild it but he didn't want to leave Britain due to my sick great-grandmother at the time. We must never forget history. Thank you! 🙏🕎🕊

The ochsteins were from Vilna on my great grandmothers side. The Kaplans near Grodno. The neighbors helped the nazis or beat them to it by taking the farms and businesses. Watch the film Defiance. In the grodno oblast fewer than 200 Jews survived. My family made it to ft Wayne Indiana in roughly 1908 to 1910. We owned the Cadillac hotel In Miami Beach in the forties and fifties. Never again happened on Oct 7th. It didn't help that my generation has fewer population due to low birth rate and intermarriages. Now the temples are combining and collapsing.

My grandfather was jewish, i only saw him once when i was six years old. His ancestors had settled first in the redbank and strangeways area of Manchester. I think they were either from Belarus or Lithuania. Im not sure. I would like to unearth more.

Theresa would of been year younger 10, my mum in Parr st helens Lancs then now Merseyside, my dad would of been 13 so they remembered the bombing near by and in Liverpool and surrounding areas like theirs on factories.. So sad and upsetting your relatives killed by the nazi's rounding all the jewish community up from their homes and took their lives and young poor childrens lives. It's just so terrible even today 80 or so years ago .. Excellent documentary you've done of your Relatives, Simon.

I watched all five videos yesterday and was both touched and impressed. This morning I look at my usual non msm news sources and see the the fascist and apartheid state of Israel’s continuing onslaught on the Palestinian people. We should not be surprised that the abused have turned abuser. As a nation, though, we have a history of standing up for the persecuted. Now, would be a good time to stand up for the Palestinians before it is too late.
