Anachronism: The Somme took place in 1916. One guy's singing the "Chanson de Craonne" which, while it existed in various forms at that time, did not exist with the lyrics sung by the soldier until the Chemin des Dames Offensive in 1917. Beautiful song, but wrongly put into the movie.
@andrewescocia2707

i thought this was verdun but that took place before the somme so ether way it's still out of place if your right about the date of the song.
@zackbobby5550
@zackbobby5550 3 года назад
Not quite correct. There's no RECORD of it existing in this way before 1917, but you can't just walk in and say for a fact that it was not. The first guy to RECORD it more than likely was not also the guy that made it up. He probably heard it from somebody else, who heard it from somebody else, etc. It's perfectly plausible that this version of the song originated around this time, particularly with how much the French hated the Somme. I'm not trying to say that for a fact this was the case btw, only saying that you can't also for a fact prove that it's not the case. Record keeping was terrible at this point in time. The song was likely sang for months before it become big enough for people to bother recording it. Hell, in tons of these battles they don't even know how many people died, sometimes by THOUSANDS of people off.

France The refusal to obey affects about 70 divisions; 250 cases of mutinies will be identified. It is mainly about refusing new offensives, not abandoning the trenches. The rear is the setting for these collective refusals of obedience, not the front line. The directive n ° 1, of May 19, 17, of Pétain will lead to the end of the mutinies: it orders the end of the offensives, answering the wish of the mutineers. The number of these has been estimated between 25,000 and 40,000 men. 554 death sentences will be pronounced, 49 actual executions. This is the French case, mutinies also broke out in the British army. English Army The British General Staff used Etaples as a base for assembling troops, away from the fighting, but well connected by rail to Arras and Bethune. 60,000 men were constantly training on Mount Levin. The reinforcements disembarked at the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, and after a forced march of 26 km, were subjected to ruthless supervision from the instructors, nicknamed the "canaries", because they carried a yellow armband. These instructors, the majority of whom have never seen the front, mix sadism and cruelty. They were, according to Private Notley: "the worst people imaginable who turned men's lives into hell." Etaples experienced the revolt of the soldiers against the training conditions in September 1917. The Postal Control of September 17, 1917 evokes the revolt of Scottish and Canadian soldiers, blocking the bridges with machine guns. Corporal Reynolds testifies: “At the foot of the hill was Detention Camp No. 1 with its hapless prisoners tied at their wrists while down on the beach, struggling in the mud and silt, hundreds, thousands of troops were insulted and molested. ". Deserters organize themselves in bands in the surrounding woods. A society of deserters, "Le Sanctuaire" is formed and finds refuge in the tunnels and wells around Camiers. According to certain studies (Allison and Fairley: The monocled mutineer, 1978, and M. Lecat: When the plowmen courted the land, 1995), the rebellion began on September 9, 1917. On the Place d'Etaples, Corporal William Wood was arrested by the Military Police (MP), for having conversed with a nurse, conversation then prohibited! The patrol leader shoots the corporal down in the scuffle following the arrest. The news quickly spread among Scots, Australians and New Zealanders in the camp. They grab the training weapons from the camp. The mutiny begins. The revolted soldiers are spreading in town despite the attempt to intercept the Royal Fusiliers on the bridge of Trois Arches. The hunt for "canaries" and PM begins in the streets and houses of Etaples. A thousand rebels from Le Touquet won Etaples. General Thomson, commander of the training camp, and his subordinates are thrown from the bridge over the Canche. Abuses are committed in the town of Etaples. Lucien Roussel, 15-year-old Etaplois, testifies: “The British troops swarmed the city like savages, pilfering and destroying everything in their path. They occupied the Square for days on end ”. After three days of revolt, the assault on Passchendaele being imminent, the British command decided to intervene. The 19th Hussars and part of the 1st Honorable Artillery Company are directed to Etaples. On September 13, two battalions withdrawn from the Artois front joined them, followed by a squadron of Gurkas from the Indian Army. On the 14th, the camp is invested. The rebels must win the front. There is no way today to establish the exact number of soldiers who were then shot. In Boulogne, the British army also had to deal with mutineers among the Labor Corps. Marshal Haig had 23 Egyptian workers executed, and later 9 Chinese workers. In Etaples, Corporal Jesse Short was shot on October 4, 1917. The leader of the mutiny Percy Toplis, deserter, the "mutineer with a monocle", was arrested on October 15, 1917 in Rang-du-Fliers; he escaped, and was shot dead in England in 1920.

For those who didn't know, those who served in the French Foreign Legion were issued new birth certificates for serving that made them French. Though I don't actually know if Corsicans were considered proper French at the time or if they would have been in the legion.
@zamzamazawarma928
@zamzamazawarma928 3 года назад
Corsicans were full, proper French citizens for quite some time by the time of WW1. This scene has nothing to do with the FL. Also, know that there are French citizens in the FL but they receive a new identity. That's because you don't enlist to become French. First, you become a legionary, then only you become French. Even if you enlisted to be French, soon enough you will live for the Legion, and becoming French will only be the cherry on the top.
@ClemDiamond
@ClemDiamond 3 года назад
Corsicans were in the regular french army, as they were born french. France bought the island from the republic of Geneva in 1768. But Corsicans always had a nationalistic pride and some still want independance. Many of them were very unwilling to fight in WW1 and claimed it wasn't their war.

None of these reason. They have been condemned to bet shot as examples for having mutilated themselves in order to leave the battlefield. In this movie, they just send them in the no man's land to be shot. Hundred of soldiers get executed as an example for some obscure reason during first world war, a lot of them were unjustified.
