The middle is usually the highest point of the road and, usually where the water is shallowest. Still no guarantee that it will be posthole free, though.

Hey Steve, can you remember where your aunt lived? The house we stayed in was only about 5kms from the Welsh border as the crow flies.

How do you make that out?

Overly generalized. I see few actual bike paths. No actual marked bike paths. No protected bike lanes. Recreational ones at best. Widths Ok when they exist. For cycling I think it's probably way better over there in England. Heck you can't even ride a road (highway) between cities here. Too dangerous.

@@derekjolly3680 I have to agree with you on this. I'm curious where sanoroo lives, because here in Boise it's pretty much how you've described it. We have one "bike path" and that's a shared greenbelt path along the river. And any time after about 9am it's packed with more pedestrians than cyclists. Then we have all the miles of singletrack in the hills, but everything else is roads. When I watch these UK cycling videos on YT, I am constantly tempted to relocate there just for the riding.

It definitely varies around the UK but the road surfaces can be absolutely shocking at times.

I tend to just stick my head out the door and judge it on that. I tend to also listen to the TV weather forecast; if a storm warning has been issued then I’m less likely to ride.

@@jollygoodveloFor some reason I've been much more keen in the last year at having more to go on with the forecasts. Not just how does it look outside or how does it feel. I guess the real reason is I've been logging more hours riding week to week and taking it much more seriously compared to years past. Therefore, more emphasis on the forecasting.

@@jollygoodvelo I don't need a cell phone for that if I have a computer, TV, and radio all handy. Again, it's simply high tech I don't need, since I've never needed it.

Kind of. I saw his birthplace in Shrewsbury which is about an hour away from where I was cycling.

Sadly, the weather hasn’t really improved; it’s still very wet, windy and cold.

@@jollygoodvelo I explained about that though. I'm not a cavemen either. I'm also not entirely a Luddite. I just feel that one, people have become obsessed with adding layers and layers of electronic or computerized crap to everything they do, and to nearly every thought they have, to the point that they can't function or think for themselves or even act remotely normal without it. Which is queer in part because it all tends to make people rather abnormal. It becomes a neurosis of a sort. Even someone who's a semi-tech junkie can notice the effects in others. Secondly as I certainly said before about my perspective with cycling, I see it (tech obsession) as violating the spirt of cycling whereby you ordinarily are breaking away from the trappings of confinement and modern habits, and the same four walls, to be out in the country as it were, to get fresh air, to clear your head, to get your exercise in, to view the world more normally, to put yourself back into some kind of a traditional healthy activity, etc. Why compromise that? I see people every dammed day who can't even walk their dogs for 15 minutes without staring at their ruddy cell phones constantly like pods! That's not anyway I want to live or approach life. I think also that people do not know how to draw a line and say, "This is as far as it goes." With me I can leave the stuff, or switch it off. I've even pulled back on some things, like cordless phones. I hated the mousy rings. I only have traditional corded phones now. So, that's how I feel, Lenny.

@@hamsterecology People can be thick, and also compulsive. Sometimes you have to pile it on to make a point, besides having to put it into context. Explaining a perspective is not being a loony. Insulting someone along those lines is pretty weak actually. Disagreeing, or simply not liking seeing something said, then calling them crazy for it. Poor tactics, yet common. Common in political discussions.
