Welcome to the bicycle diaries!
This week I am away from home in a place called Ludlow in Shropshire. As you would expect, I have brought my bike with me and I hope to go out and do a couple of rides while I am here. The problem is that it is a part of the world that I don't know at all and I have never cycled here so I have had to create some routes using the Hammerhead dashboard and transfer them to my Karoo cycling computer.
Once it is on there, I can use the navigation and upcoming elevation features while I am out on my bike cycling the roads and hills of Shropshire!

Great vid Leonard. Got to admire your honesty in getting beaten by that hill and not doing a creative edit. We've all been there, especially on unfamiliar rides. Nice part of the country.

Stunning Leonard. So nice to see some of my home roads captured so beautifully. Living so close to Leominster and Ludlow, it’s easy to take them for granted. Your video reminds me why I live here! Sorry I couldn’t make it on your Leominster run though. I had a busy day and my scheduled ride was a very early one! 45km around the Woolhope Dome in Herefordshire. It was bliss as part of the loop is closed to motor vehicles due to landslides last winter. Lovely and quiet! Lumpy though!

I stayed in Ludlow last year and I too was beaten by the Shropshire hills. The ride up into the centre of town beat me but I was towing a dog trailer with a 16kg dog. Lovely place to stay with an architecturally different shopping area.

Terrific video, Leonard. I fully sympathize with you stopping half way up that hill. As an older guy I just have to accept that I'm not quite as fit as I was 40 years ago. At least when you stopped, you weren't passed by a some lithesome 17 year old girl as I was the other day.

The ride on the road from out the back of Ludlow Castle leading into mid Wales is absolutely stunning..I did that on an Audax-Sportive ride of 225km a few years back, then there was a lot of tough climbs around Newtown,Kerry, Dolfor and Sarn around 20miles on from there 👍👍

I think that one of the things that I most appreciate about your rides/films is your honesty. I don't think that all youtubers would be willing to show that a hill beat them. For me, it just makes you real. I greatly appreciate that and I'm sure that I'm not the only one. I've been beaten by many a hill in my day, but I keep pushing. I truly look forward to getting back on the bike. I'm recovering from shoulder surgery and the doc says I'm about 5 months away. I knew I'd miss is, but didn't think I'd miss it this much. Cheers!

My lezyne does as an option. That said, it often says I'm riding underwater according to the live elevation read out (does anyone else have this issue?) even though it links to GPS and glonass. I assume they use different methods to target cruise missiles. I always have to correct elevation through Strava or the lezyne app. I wonder if it works better on preprogrammed routes where it loads actual map information

You've got the right name for Shropshire. Same as mine. Lovely part of the country. They say if you lick the walls of Ludlow Castle, you can taste the blood. You need a 22T ring to get up Stoke, and you didn't climb Killhorse Lane. Neither did you ride to Clee. Angelbank up the A4117 is a favourite with the local clubs to include in road races. It would be a Cat 2 if it was in the Tour de France. You could have carried on the Cleobury Mortimer, pronounced 'Clibbery Mortima'. Ludlow was a control point on my 200 Audax. Yes, my Audax went up Angelbank to Clibbery. The A49 is the major N-S trunk road which should be avoided. Brave souls use it on their LEJOG. Well done. You'll be back.

I bloody love you mate Great to see honesty and also see you getting though it regardless. The “mystery” element is an odd one. We have all the stats, inclines etc online ... but how to pace it, how to judge it etc when you’ve not a Scooby where you are really. Odd one. I’m just about to start a 400+ run on the St Jacques de Compostelle, over multi days obviously, after the valley to Cahors, I’ve no clue about any of it except it starts being “up and down” which is not big climbs but it ends up being up a climb, down a short descent, up another ... and repeat I bloody hate those due to no rest really ever Are you still Majorca-ing this year ?

Seeing a climb on paper has very little bearing on what it is like in reality. As for Mallorca, at present Spain and the islands have been removed from the air bridge list so it’s looking unlikely.

@@jollygoodvelo it’s a shame for you It isn’t only affecting Spain though, even while France is still on the ok list just now, worries have meant that we took €3000 plus of cancellations for end of season rescheduled bookings, yesterday alone, from Brits who are worried that France will get “Spained” With the quarantine by the U.K.And can’t risk it. Hence the Chemin .... may as well do something useful

I use the shades when it is cloudy to prevent things like flies and dust getting in to my eyes!

@@jollygoodvelo And to prevent cataracts and retina damage. Ultraviolet still gets through those leaden clouds.
