This box was for a life-long friend to put her husband's ashes into. The request was to have a lid on the box that could be opened. The box is made from reclaimed Australian hardwoods and the lid insert is Camphor Laurel.

Beautiful tribute to your friend. Nice save using the dowels.

Thank you. I initially used the dowels to counter any movement in the insert (although I really don’t think that’s an issue) and they ended up saving my butt 👍🏼

Thanks very much Vipun, glad you liked it. Yes, it is pretty good having the two table saws as I found out during this build. I always envisaged the second saw would come in handy for box making 👍

Yes Barbers... I would ask the same question. I gave up my standard table saw for the same that Vic now uses. I wish I had kept the old, as it had features ( like the jigs) that I miss

Thanks very much Anthony. I initially was thinking that I had to make a stand out piece with amazing details but then decided against that because I didn’t want the box to take attention away from its purpose. The lid detail was just the right amount. Oh yeah, loving the two table saw setup 😁👍🏼

Great Video and thanks for posting, people don’t realise the time it take to prepare timber for the build, I know I am surprised by how long it takes me and it was great to see how you go about it. I love repurposing old timber and giving it a new life. Very beautiful box by the way, great mitres and a great hinge fit!, I do have a question being unfamiliar with lasers - I have a small cnc machine where I need to clamp down the wood to ensure stability during the cut, but did I see right that when using a laser there is no need to clamp down your project? Many thanks Brenton
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 17 дней назад
Thanks very much Brenton, the amount of work that goes into making something is rarely evident in the finished piece. Yes, when engraving with a laser the piece doesn’t need to be fixed down because nothing is actually touching the piece other than the laser beam. Sometimes when cutting components out it may be necessary to hold things down, just depends on the task and material though.

Beautiful box, and stunning insert. I'm a bit perplexed 🤔. I made a fancy box for my Dads ashes, but once installed, I glued it up. What is the purpose of the finger slot?
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 18 дней назад
Thanks mate. The owner specifically wanted the lid to be able to open so it wasn’t made as a traditional urn that gets sealed up

Quality work as always! That Camphor Laurel is gorgeous! Vic, how did you determine the size for the box? I have given some thought to making a couple of these for my wife and myself. Of course, I am in no hurry to use them!! Thanks Vic,
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 17 дней назад
Thanks mate, that lid came out awesome and it wasn’t until I waxed it that I saw it myself. The dimensions for the box were given to me by our friend, they were based around the ashes container that is given to the next of kin by the crematorium and she wanted to add a few of his small personal things in there too.

No concerns about wood movement in the lid Vic? I mitred a piece in a similar fashion and it moved a mm and caused me grief.
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 17 дней назад
@@mrboics no not really mate. I’ve never had that issue with any of my builds and particularly in pieces that small (I think it’s more of a problem for northern hemisphere makers who have scared the rest of into thinking it’s a huge issue) 😂
@mrboics
@mrboics 17 дней назад
Interesting. I'm based in Melbourne and a 35cm wide piece of pine move quite a bit for me. It may have been poorly dried in the first place though..? I rebuilt the piece and it's now a loose panel within a mitre. Don't take my word though, I'm pretty inexperienced compared to you!
