Here is my review of the NISI C5 Matte Box. Do you own a matte box yet ? Cheers, Flo
@krdcountrytv
@krdcountrytv Год назад
Thank you for your comprehensive review. It seems this matte box is a definite step up from the Tilta mini (price, size and functionality). Nearly all of my shooting takes place outdoors so I was particularly interested in your explanation of the advantages of the Nisi system in outdoor and brightly lit locations. Definitely one to think about (I already have the Tilta and Small Rig matte boxes but this one seems to fit nicely between them - in more ways than one!).

Thanks for watching!! It really is, as I mentioned in the video it is quite a versatile and useful matte box for a lot of situations. Very well suited for outdoor and run and gun.

Great review - thanks Flor. I agree - the big draw back for me is that if you need the VND and IR - that's all you can do. If you want to add Mist or any other filtration, there is no 2nd level 4 x 5.65 filter tray. Good for beginner's, but not for advanced. Also - that flag looks very weak and flimsy - which is a real shame. I'm kinda on the fence about this one. I could see using it a lot in simple run-and- gun shoots, docs, and fast moving projects as it gives you great control of the amount of light hitting the lens - but for anything that requires more control, you'll need something better. Thanks again.
@OfTwoLands
@OfTwoLands Год назад
Thanks!! You can actually use both 4x4 and 4x5.65 filters at the same time. So you can get an IRND 4x4 and then use the 4x5.65 black mist for example. That way you have a 2 filter set up similar to a more traditional matte box.
@JimmyBlanco
@JimmyBlanco Год назад
I have the small rig star trail matte box, it has stackable filter trays that’s the primary reason I got it so I can use as many 4x5.65 filters as I want. I think that’s a big problem solver
@ListenHereOldMan
@ListenHereOldMan 11 месяцев назад
@@JimmyBlanco you can stack extras in the Tilta one that comes w the Mirage set, which is what i have, but the color shift is awful. i really wanted this bc Nisi's got such nice filters, but i think not being able to stack at least one more is a dealbreaker... really need one extra slot, i dunno why they'd make it this way other than just being able to come out with one that does have an extra slot later. frustrating
@decimalWeb

@@JimmyBlanco How is the reliability of the stacking trays? Those support 4mm filters without any issue? I'm thinking of this for new BMPCC 6k fullframe as it has no internal ND

@@OfTwoLandsSorry if I’m just not understanding this, but it sounds like your limited to only 2 filters at a time. My desired setup is to use the variable ND filter built for this system, an IR Cut filter, and a mist filter, is that possible with this system?

Great video. Changing filters looks a lot easier on this one compared to my SmallRig, but looks like it only takes one 5x4.65 which is a shame. The IR CUT filter in the swift system is very effective when using the True Colour VND on BMPCC, life saver.

I bought the C5 matte box system a week ago and this review is spot on. Nisi tried a quick fix to enable quick removal of the carbon fiber hoods like some of the other competiors and it was a mistake to me there could of been a better way to do it other than that I like the matte box

If I can offer a critique (with due respect)... Please keep your examples up for longer, especially the side by side comparisons. I can barely see one and before I can see the other the shot is gone. And a question: Have you tried the Small Rig Modular (Star Trail?) matte box? How would that compare to this NiSi? They both seem to be similar, I think it comes down to filter quality and construction of the matte box. I read a couple negative reviews on this C5 and one of the criticisms was unexpected plastic bits on something that should have been metal (I don't recall what the review referred to). I'm in the market for my first matte box for my BMPCC 4K and I want to pick the right one.

great review, thanks! how are you getting along w it, a few months in? any more complaints? i have the tilta mirage and it's great to have the motor for gimbal work but the color shift is killing me, too much time in post... wanted this bc Nisi's filter quality, but like others have noted, i really, really wish you could add just one more filter, either 4x4 or 4x6.5, it would so, so much more versatile, and yeh in certain situations you're gonna run into issues w vignetting/etc by stacking, but 3 filters isn't too many, and you're able to stack w the Mirage... i wonder... someone told me the C5 filters fit in the Mirage, so maybe i can buy the kit, and when i need to stack 3, put the Nisi filters inside the Mirage matte box.. lol sorry for the novel. but yeh, would love to know if you've experienced any issues w it, I'd like to replace the Tilta VND ASAP. thx again!

Thanks for the great review. Can I ask, did U remove a bracket or hinge from the left side of the top flag? Was this to allow U to remove it? The fact that the top flag is not easily removable is the main reason I am hesitant to buy it. Thanks

Thanks for the review Flo! I was wondering if you could still use any circular filters with the matte box? I am saying this as I can see myself in the situation where I don't need the full 4 stops of ND, but still would need 1-3 stops with IR cut filter. Therefore by removing the IRND 4 stops, I loose the IR feature, which I could replace with my Hoya circular IR cut filter. Cheers

Thanks for watching! I don’t think you can, I haven’t tried it yet but I don’t think it is deep enough at the back. I'm doing quite a lot of outdoor and wildlife shooting myself for a Belgian TV and I'm really surprised that you manage to use a mate box in these conditions... I've the smallrig one and ended up never using it because it's all too bulky, cumbersome to use.. that being said, now, with that rotating wheel ,, and the fact that you can put a rectangular Black Mist .. i suppose it helps avoiding the tunnelling effect when stacking too much filters.. Did you test the system out on say a 16mm lens (full frame) to see if there are issues? Thanks for the extensive review.

As i see the adapter ring leans backwards so it may overlap the focus ring a bit and makes it impossible to use the follow focus since the mattbox blocks the way. Great solution but the vast majority of cinema glass has an outer diameter of 104 mm and above - which severely limits its usability - I really dont get why they couldnt size it that little bit up to accomodate standard sizes - a huge missed potential. Of course its not meant for large production sets but still... for my usage it would be perfect but it doesnt fit my most used lenses - so no go.
