Replacement? I had to buy 95 -114 mm adapter with extra pay. My 77 mm adapter worked perfectly; easy in and easy out. But his one seems to be in problem. I believe, there is a problem in the lens thread itself.
Just a note that the Tilta matte box retains the filter thread on inside of the adapters, so you can still use a small screw filter with a large filter in the matte box, so you can use two filters.
was a good point though. when o opened mine I thought "thats gaudy as hell" and used it for 2 days before I realized it. im not one to go scraping new gear hoping its a sticker.. must have been my switch to decaf.
How to use Smallrig matte box with my circular VND or Polariser filters? In my opinion this is a real issue.... The lack of internal threads on the rings is a real disappointment
Thanks for the upload, looking forward to receiving mine, hopefully soon. A bit concerned about the 77mm ring as I only currently have one lens (Meike cine 25mm) and I too preordered the matte box . I am contemplating buying the sigma 18-35 with both a speedbooster and a normal adapter for my bmpcc 4K. This would cover a nice range of field of view and would be nice to travel with. But with the current situation, I’m hardly filming and I can’t justify it to the misses ;) and no I don’t wear the pants in our household 😂 I choose Happy!
@@driftwoodpictures Sorry to hear that, I've just received mine and the adapter works fine, I hope you will get a replacement soon. You can always buy a single step-up and/or step-down ring off of Amazon to make do in the meantime. Those are usually cheap to buy!
I don't really use VND but technically you could put one at the front of the lens and then snap the matte box on but you may as well use the VND as is unless the matte box is purely for protection. It is just not ideal as it can rotate the MB based on the VND you have.
Just a heads up, but the latch that secures the top flag can be adjusted with one of the included allen keys to be much tighter than it is by default. I tightened mine so that the flag is firmly locked in place when the latch is closed, and I very much prefer it that way!
Great video, i also pre ordered this matte box and choose it over the Tilta because of the two filter slots. I also don't like the way you mount a filter on the Tilta matte box. You can adjust the strength of the flag with one of the included tools. Then you have better control and a better feeling about the top flag. :)
Thank you !! Yeah having two filters is amazing for sure. And yes I agree, as I say in the video the way to put filters on the tilta can be frustrating. Of course haha, thanks for tip :).
@@farwestgarohills3831 I use the dedicated rod support for the mattebox to keep it leveled. I can't comment on the side flags because I don't need them, sorry.
Great review as always guys. My 2c (for what it's worth having owned neither, but pushing me towards the smallrig) is the distance between filters to the lens. The reason I didn't buy the tilta is because of how far away the filters sit from the lens element which can allow for light refraction. P.S. That village looks incredible, can't wait to be sipping cappuccinos there together!
Thanks mate !! And yes I agree with that point too, even though I never experienced any issues with the Tilta (on a few different lighting conditions) it definitely could happen. And 100%, cannot wait for you guys to come. Will have to plan a few shoots 😬🎥 !!
Hey, do you still recommend to get mattebox for 6k PRO ? If yes, which one do you recommend more for pro version, and how it works with 18mm f4 contax zeiss (rotate front)?
I think it depends on the work you do and the type of lenses you have rather than the camera. With cinema lenses you need to and if you want to use high quality cinema filters you also do. I don't use it with the 18mm, I prefer to use a circular ND :)
Many thanks for answer, I use set of contax zeises and dont thinks I will use pro mist or smt like that. After your answer I think I will skip mattebox on my rig:p
Hi! I have the sigma 18-35 and the canon 70-200 like you. What was the front diameter of those lenses? I am trying to find the right spacer/donut to fit it on the matte box. Thanks!
Heyo. So I commented on your other video. My Nisi filters are super tight on my tilta mattebox. Did you experience this? Like so tight I can barely get them in and out. I’m afraid I’m gonna break a filter at some point trying to get them out. Are yours like that? Looks like they go in fairly easy in your videos. Thanks!
Thank you. Very informative and to the point video with lots of useful info. I am was considering smallrig but after seeing the size difference I would most likely get tilta mini when needed.
Not sure if you knew this but they come in 3 different sizes? I bought the very smallest for my Pocket 6K G2 and to be honest it looks like a toy and is kinda cheap as well. I wish I had gotten this one instead.
Yeah will be getting one, got two tiffen 4. x456 IRND glimmerglass filters coming and nothing to hold them lol Was going to get the tilta will have to check when this comes in
I was thiiiis close to purchasing Tilta before discovering it's too small for 95mm lens. Very disappointed as the smaller size better suits my purpose. The Small Rig it is. Thanks!
Nice vid. I was wondering why I couldn’t get the thread onto the 77mm filter. For people that are worried about not being able to use screw on filters: there is a product that allows you to do so with this matte box. You insert the filter into a 4x4/4x5.65 slide and insert it into one of the slots.
Fuck, I did NOT know it was that large. But it's already been shipped :( Next attempt should be something the size of the Tilta mini with the ability to load two filters
Haha it is a bit big. Still a great product though especially for the price so I’d still be excited to receive it if I were you :). It kinda needs to be bigger than the tilta with the two filters and the bigger diameter.
Anyone have any solutions when using the SmallRig matte box and Rod Support with a lens that doesn't have internal focusing? Once everything is locked in, the barrel of these kinds of lenses cannot freely move when trying to focus.
One of the reviews on B&H indicates that the Smallrig scratches the edges of the filters after a while. Have you found this to be true? That would be a dealbreaker for me.
Like you, I was a bit surprised by the size of the Small Rig matte box when mine arrived. It was bigger than I was expecting and it is very light - to the point that I wonder about how well it will stand up to sustained use. It just has a slightly flimsy feel to it but at least the light weight doesn't add much to the overall weight of whatever rig you are using. But I quickly realised it doesn't fit into my usual camera bag (unlike the Tilta Mini). Two filters is definitely an advantage but opening the door to the filter tray seems very fiddly. I think this matte box obviously has its place and is another value for money proposition from Small Rig but I don't think it is a case of this matte box or the Tilta Mini being a 'winner' or 'loser' in the matte box wars. They both serve a niche and, for small lenses in particular, the Tilta is a good option (as long as you can work with one filter). Both matte boxes are, in my view, very realistic alternatives to heavier and more expensive rail mounted versions, especially for budget filmmakers. Your review was very balanced. I'll be interested to look back on my own experience in 6 or 12 months after having used both matte boxes over a period of time. (PS I am also a big fan of Nisi filters).
Gret review, thanks! I know there's a huge difference in price and features, but how do you find it compared to the MB-T12 in terms of size/weight/practicality of side slots vs drop-in filters? Thanks!
Thank you for watching :) !! You can really tell the MB T12 is better built for sure but much heavier. I’m not sure which way I prefer when it comes to inserting the filters yet. You do get 3 with the MBT though. Right now I would say unless you’re doing heavy work or high budget production and you can afford to buy or rent the MBT, the smallrig is definitely more than enough and amazing value !!
Wanted to buy a bright tangerine one, but hell, this is the perfect starting point and the combo with the pro mist and nisi filter will be cheaper than the BT matte box.
Really love the smallrig matte box. But the size difference is quite a lot. How was this to travel with? Definitely a space grabber in any backpack or portable case!
Just a quick note, why are you using normal BMP batteries with an extender? Best thing i've ever bought is the VLOCK batterys. Its a WHOLE new level i swear, you should try
I got it yesterday and have nothing to compare it to as I've only seen pictures of matte boxes before 😄 but it does seem to let me attach filters and block out light, so all good. Wanted to use filters with my 11mm Irix lens that lacks a filter thread and it was affordable (comparatively). Mounted in on a small magic arm as I forgot to purchase the rod mount from SmallRig. One question, though. Is there a way to remove the filters without putting your fingers all over the filter?
Loved the video man! Just out of curiosuity, which ring adapter did you use for the sigms 18-35 for the mattebox. I just bought the samllrig one as in your video, but found the rings that came with it aren't fitting as expected
Thank you :) !! And no I haven't yet, I would probably use the Tilta for the Contax unless I need 2 filters but I am sure it would be fine with the Smallrig too.
Just order today the BMPCC 6K, and the Canon 16-35 🙊 . I will certainly get a Matte Box but the SMALLRIG seems a bit too big for me, I will buy the Tilta system in the future because it is compact. Although....the two rail SMALLRIG system for the filters, is really awesome....ahhhhhhgggg, ok i need more time to think about it😄...Watched your video about the Wise Advanced Portable SSD, do you know if a 6K 50 FPS BRAW is possible with this SSD ? I am having a hard time finding the right SSD or CFast. As always thank you for your honest opinion . Peace
Nice one! Question: Regarding Nisi filters for matte box, better to use single 6-stop or 2 3-stop filters stacked up? There’s a discount for them at the moment in Aus
I just ordered mine. Along with a 4 x 4” ND8 glass filter. $AUD135.00 from Amazon. I’m looking forward to using it. Thanks for the comparison review I think I made the right purchase
I have a question for you regarding the Tilta and the other Smallrig mini matte boxes: They all have the filter trays at the end of the matte box, making them more likely to have light hit them from the side and to have reflections inside. Have you had any issues with the Tilta in this regard? I would like to get the Smallrig Mini Matte Box Pro, but I've notice that the Smallrig matte box you reviewed is the only model with the filter trays right next to the lens where they should be. Love your videos, BTW. There's a good reason your channel keeps growing and people keep engaging.
Hey really love your content this is awesome . What is your preferred camera you use for videomaking , I'd love to have a conversation and maybe even collaborate on different ways in telling stories through film!
Thanks for the review. Any feedback on the sturdiness of the mount on the filter thread ? I mean, relying on the filter thread to hold the weight of the mattebox and the filter worries me a bit. (I never used a mattebox but i'm considering switching to one).
Thanks for watching !! It feels pretty sturdy to me, like it doesn't wobble or anything. Its metal so should be pretty safe. Of course with a proper and heavy cine lens I would use rods :).
Thanks for this super useful and relevant video!! I have it on preorder and am waiting for it to arrive to my local dealer :) Question. Can you thread on circular filters to the lens adapters like you can on the tilta or is this not possible?
@@OfTwoLands ah okay cool thanks! Or maybe put the threaded diffusion filters behind the mattebox adapter and then just thread them on and off when you change lenses etc. :)
Bought the Tilta when it was first announced & that nob killed me, I replaced it after my filter slid out of the box.. looking at this small rig- the 2 filters is super appealing. Thanks for the review!
@@OfTwoLands I meant to ask- with this is it possible to also use a VND with this matte box? Trying to stack a 4x5.65 filter with VND on the lens at same time!
Love your content. I have the Tilta Mini and now considering the new Smallrig Mini Matte Box as an addition. Are you planning to do a review of this product?
Awesome review! I have a promist filter on my lens currently. Will I be able to attach this with the filter on the lens? Or will I have to scrap that filter and get a completely new one to use the filter? Thanks! :)
Thank you! I find your reviews unusually trustworthy. Maybe that's your voice. :-) I do wish you had better covered how exactly this mattebox attaches to 15mm rods. But I understand that rods are not a part of your usual rig.
Haha thank you :) !! Yeah that is why, but it is pretty similar to any other rod system and Smallrig sells their own adapter so you can move the matte box up and down depending on your setup.
I also did so. But I had to buy another, that is JTZ DP30 4x5.65, owing to finding light spill from the side and was unable keep the matte in perfect horizontal level.
Thanks !! Well you can use a 82mm VND that has a thread at the front and then snap on the Matte box with a filter in but not ideal as mentioned below it can rotate the MB based on the VND you have.
@@OfTwoLands that doesn’t work so well because when you turn the filter it also spins the matte box. Also, the weight of the matte box tends to spin the vnd on its own. I’ve tried this with the Tilta mini matte box 😕 Nice review by the way 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Nice review! Are there filter threads on the adapter rings? IE, can you mount a 82mm circular filter on the front of the 82mm adapter ring? Would be great to be able to use a variable ND with the mattebox.
Thank you !! Unfortunately not, I think they probably built in with the intended use of having 2 cinema filters and not circulars. You can always use a VND that has a thread and snap the Matte box on top of that :).
Did you stop using your Tilta MB-T12? Can you tell me Why? I am currently using it, looking for a gimbal-alternative/light weight addition to my arsenal.
Hey, as I´m trying to support the mattebox and not only the lens, otherwise it´ll take more time when changing lenses, what about when focus pulling and then the lens moves back and forward, therefore moving the mattebox? What'd be the solution or there isn´t one? Thanks!
What would you say if I need to use circular filter on the lens + lets say pro mist with the mattebox. Can you put circular filter on the lens at all with the adapter ring on the lens?
