Im from about 15 minutes from here and met the niece of Annie Oakley in 2013. At the time she was 101 years old but could still recount some memories of her aunt. A few of which were shooting lessons from Annie herself.
My Mother was nicknamed Annie Oakley in the militia here in. Nova Scotia,Canada. Mom was a sharpshooter as well. She won numerous medals and trophies. I'm very proud of her. 😊
my hometown, im in he tombstone business. my great grandfather Edwin F. Nickol made annie oakley's tombstone. there is a picture of it in the shop window before it was set in the cemetery. i'm still engrave tombstones for a living today.
I played Frank Butler in a high school production of “Annie Get Your Gun” in 1984. I remain good friends with my very good friend who played Annie. She has done an amazing job with our local high school choral music program. So I’m always interest in learning new things about Frank and Annie.
That makes me only 3 degrees of separation from Annie Oakley. I saw a video of a guy who talked to a guy who sat on the lap of a guy who hired Annie Oakley. AWESOME!
In Oct ‘17 I visited Phoebe & Frank’s final resting place. The more you learn about the couple the more impressed I am! I would like to go to the Annie Oakley festival in Greenville one summer
Annie was hired twicw by Cody, she left during the tour of England and was asked back later totour Paris. They had not realised at first, how big a celebrity she was and her value to the Cody show.
I can't stand inaccuracies so I will let all of you know that Annie Oakley was actually born 15 miles to the North of Greenville Ohio somewhere in the area of North Star or Willowdell. There is a Ohio state historical sign just outside of North Star on State route 127 that confirms my information. Greenville just claims her because it is Darke county's seat. Think about it she obviously did not learn to shoot squirrels in town. I grew up roaming some of those same woods and i often imagine myself shooting some small game on the same parcels of land she did. I guess I most likely have.
Thanks so much for this video! I am reading McMurtrys book "The Colonel and Little Missie". Just got a good start but I feel that I can recommend it. Thanks, Larry and big thanks to Chuck for this very well done video!
I just finished watching the American Experience PBS series documentary about her as no man at that time (possibly of all-time?) could match her sharpshooting skills and so seeing your video presentation of her grave site is very nostalgia. Thank You. www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/oakley/player/
Is her Headstone Newer? I passed the graveyard years ago & could not find her headstone? My wife has relatives in Ohio & we were taking the backroads, there was at least one sign that stated she was buried in the cemetery. If I remember correctly it is a small cemetery.
If you haven’t gotten back or thinking of going back . How about taking some Flowers to the grave. Just a thought. Those who are thinking of see her take some too. Thanks for sharing.
My great grandmother was a lifelong friend of Annie Oakley aka a Phoebe. My great grandparents were both born in Darke County and are buried in Greenville last name of Speelman. I have the present Annie gave to my great grandparents as a wedding gift. It’s what I describe as like a very beautiful punch bowl with glasses.
I wonder how it is that there is a marker in between Annie and Frank? It is for two people. How could two people fit in between them and why are they in between them?
