A fascinating walk exploring elements of the deep history of Northampton with writer Iain Sinclair on the way to a conversation with Alan Moore, author of Jerusalem, The Watchmen, Voice of the Fire, The Great When (Long London Trilogy). Our route takes in St Peter's Church, Gold Street, All Saints Church, the Guildhall, St Andrew's Hospital, and the County Ground. The cast of characters mentioned include John Clare, William Smith, Lucia Joyce, Samuel Becket, John Deakin and more.
Presented as Unearthing Alan Moore at Swedenborg House in Bloomsbury, London.

St Peter's church is Northampton is a closed church, though maintained as a heritage asset with occasional open days. It closed for worship in 1995 and was vested in Chuches Conservation Trust (CCT) in 1998. The CCT is a predominantly volunteer based organisation and specifcally at St Peter's, the CCT is developing the Old Black Lion pub across from the church. The pub closed in 2018 and has medieval origins of some description. The CCT is leading a regeneration project focused around the pub (they've never - to my knowledge - taken on a pub before) to reopen it as a pub again. It should be interesting - they've receieved loads of funding for it and planning permission to restore the building. Hopefully it will mean the church is open more often. Great video! I was introduced to Alan Moore's writing through Swamp Thing for DC comics a long time ago and never looked back. A conversation between Ian Sinclair and Alan Moore, let alone having two great minds in the same room, must surely have caused a rupture in the fabric of space-time itself.

How sad that John Clare is so little known . Beautiful poems in the midst of suffering . Son of a farm labourer he was never far from poverty. He deserves a decent biopic .✌️

Toby Jones played him in by ourselves.... it captures Clares insanity, and his delusions. It'd be interesting they did a traditional bio... like the Turner or Lowry films.... I also always find it criminal that William Blake diddnt get the film treatment instead of the incredibly dull and tedious Turner film. I have a interest I Clare as I live near Helpston... his cottage is well worth a visit...

@@mikethebloodthirsty It would have been good if Richard Attenborough had lived as long and as actively as his brother and done a series of films on people like Blake and Clare . I like the artist Samuel Palmer who had mystical leanings , like Blake . They used to walk together in the Shoreham and Underriver areas of Kent . When I walk in that area I sometimes wonder if I walk in their footsteps ?

The old tunnels connecting important buildings under the town are fascinating to try and research … They go from the Black Lion all the way down the way you walked to the buildings opposite the Guildhall… not sure where else from there… a few of the buildings you can go into the cellars and see where they are blocked off ❤

The more I watch your videos, especially when you feature guests like Iain or Alan, the more I connect with the mysticism of Britain. I've recently been reading The Once and Future King, a series of books by T H. White about the Athurian legends. It's fascinating to think of our very recent history in these same mythical terms.

Its so good how you and your friends show how ordinary places are all extraordinary really. Everywhere is. I know nothing about Northampton but I know just one of my ancestors lived there but I know nothing about him but his name and trade. Thomas Woodford of Northampton, rope maker in the mid 1700s. The peoms of John Clare are beautiful. I once heard on the radio I think,a long piece by John Clare describing how unsettling he and no doubt many others found The Enclosures. Not being able to walk over ground and along streams and in woodland where once they could roam freely on possible pain of death, well it was as physically and mentally painful as life today where all our certainties are being cast away.

You used to get access to the church via the Black Lion pub. Years ago, whilst working for the Borough Council Electrical Dep’t, we had to switch the exterior floodlights on / off (via a time clock) over the Easter and Christmas periods from inside the church. The council would pay for the energy over these periods. It is a stunning church.

The area between Northampton and Newport Pagnell was the Norman kings of England private hunting ground, it is where they disposed of their enemies without trial... Many came to Northampton and were executed on the king's land which were outside of the laws of England. In terms of the Norman domination of the English, Northampton was an important stronghold for Norman domination and be for that it was a Viking stronghold of the Danelaw with the border of the Danelaw and Saxon England being the river at Newport Pagnell stretching around to Buckingham. Having the king invite you to hunt with him in Northampton was the last act for many English noblemen.

Hello John. It's been a long time since I watched a film of yours - nothing personal you understand 🙂- but I saw the reference to Northampton (just down the road from me) and Messrs. Sinclair & Moore so I had to take a butcher's. Wow, what a terrific film! Ian's insight - I had no idea he knew much about Northampton, but I shouldn't have been surprised, his great anecdote of the shoot-out at the poetry reading, and the mind expanding conversation between Iain and Alan made this one to remember and revisit. Thanks for sharing it - and I've got some catching up to do! Cheers👍🏼

Somewhere on the BBC's iPlayer there's a three part 1972 series by the great architecture critic Ian Nairn, "Nairn Across Britain". The first episode includes a visit to Northampton ("A rather drab, south midlands town") with a passionate defence of the Market Square and the Emporium Arcade, both of which were then under threat of redevelopment (Spoilers: They were). The whole series is a delight - probably on RU-vid as well.

Being both a comic artist, myself, and a semi-regular at one of Alan's favourite pubs, I got to know him quite well. I spent many a long evening in one curry house or another, or in the very same room you filmed in, enjoying long chats about all kinds of fascinating topics. Alan was always extremely generous with his time and also a wonderful conversationalist. It's rather fun to see that his sitting room appears to have barely changed at-all in the intervening decades. :)

Uprooted by Nina Lyon is an amazing book about the green man. The name ‘The Green Man’ was actually coined in the 1940s. The original name and meaning is lost in the depths of time. The kind of people who worshipped trees. Like Yew trees, which are found outside in many churches.
