Woah! It *is*! Even for a Tuesday afternoon, I've never seen it so empty. Especially those shots of the high street; scary....

It’s the councils fault

Your right, back in the 80,s and before a lot off people used to go Ayr and there used to be lot more shops, and the place looked a lot nicer in the summer, too be fair its not just Ayr a lot off other towns are ghost towns now, they blame it on people doing more Internet shopping and the council are not spending the time and money on them now, its very sad.

I remember walking up the high street with my parents as a kid going to game. It was so busy. The place was covered in people and at a weekend it was so much busier. Such a shame what's happened

I was there this year and it had the look of a once prosperous town , but now has a sad rather derelict appearance...sad to say

It's so similar to so many towns around the country though. very depressing indeed. The buildings are still there. but the economy, the demographics, shopping habits have changed and town centres are unrecognisable from what they were in the past. The decline was noticeable on the late 90's and has greatly accelerated, especially after the pandemic. So many retailers now have simply given up. Throwing millions of pounds at high street makeovers, such as the Scottish and UK governments are trying to do, is a complete waste of money, when the underlying problems aren't being addressed.
