From the view of the kayakers, coming down the river and encountering a mountain man talking about how this is his property, potentially gives me shades of "Deliverance"!

As a child a stream looked like the Mississippi. Now it's refreshing to be in nature and not hearing road noise (diesel rigs carry). It's enjoyable seeing you care for your land.

You've taken me back to childhood when I used to just wander in the woods for hours on end, splashing in the stream in summer, cataloging the wildflowers, stumbling upon an old abandoned cabin and wondering who used to live there (it was probably really neat before a tornado ripped half the roof off and pulled down the front porch).

Hi Michael! I had a childhood like that as well. I think at times my mother was glad I was in the woods! lol I thought it would be a nice video for a hot summer day that many of us are experiencing lately and something to take our minds off all the problems with the world right now. Thanks for watching and reminiscing too! I think a lot of kids today have no idea what they are missing hanging on there phones, computers, etc. Have a great evening! -Mark

Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago I use to do the same thing to, we moved out of the city in 82 right after my 7th birthday, I would spend hours during the summer just exploring in the woods, I don't have any children and I'm back in the city now, but I couldn't imagine in this day and age letting a child enjoy the type of freedom I had back then.

@@marksgardenlife5971 you are so right. We used to roam and play in the "woods" for hours. Ours were pockets of wooded areas surrounded by suburbs. But to kids, they were huge. Is this the property you grew up on?

Mark! That was an awesome tour. I remember doing things like that as a kid and my world was “just great”. The river was my favorite. I think the cabin in the woods is a perfect idea. Don’t ponder too long about it, man. Just do it! Thanks so much for letting us tag along. Feel free to take us back there anytime with ya.👍🏾😁

What a beautiful area.....you must not have venomous snakes to be able to walk around in flip-flops. I grew up in a metropolitan city in Texas and there were times I could walk out in our back yard and run into a rattlesnake or a copperhead and if we walked down near the waters edge, we might see a water moccasin so we were constantly looking down at the ground! Thanks for the tour!

Sharing...Totally my pleasure. Thanks for watching and of course, commenting! Send me a pic. if you would like of your farm to Marksgardenlife.com. I would enjoy seeing that. I didn't know Maryland could be so beautiful! I lived on Fort Meade in the Army for about a year back in the 90s, but there were so many people and it wasn't anywhere near as peaceful as your property there. I didn't know when I clicked on this that I would watch it completely to the end, but I certainly did! I felt like I was walking right there beside you listening to your guided tour and completely enjoying our walk through the woods! I remember the bird at the end used to be on MD license plates when I lived there in 1992-93. I only discovered your channel about a week or so ago, and am in the process of watching your videos. I used to garden in my back yard a few years ago, but have let it go with my life getting in the way. Watching your channel is a peaceful getaway, and may inspire me to try gardening again. Thanks again for this video! I thoroughly enjoyed watching it! :)

I grew up next to the woods in PA which I loved exploring and walking around in all seasons. Cutting ferns in the summer for the cemetery arrangements, and eating teaberries. And gathering greens and mosses in the fall for making "Walden" gardens (also called wintergreens) in glass fishbowls. Not to mention spotting deer and turkeys and pheasants. And cutting greens and pulling princess pine and crow's foot for wreaths at Christmas time. We made huts and "forts" and sledded around the trees in winter. Great times and great memories. I agree, a walk in the woods are refreshing to the mind and the soul.

Hi Mark. Greetings from across the miles here in New York City. Just discovered your channel and without hesitation I subscribed. I have been a long time viewer of Garden Answer and think the world of Laura. Now I have an east coast gardener to follow also. Your channel is fabulous. Without reservation I will visit your greenhouse next spring. My mother lives out on Long Island and I am forever tending to her gardens. Spring planting of annuals is a Month of May tradition and I look forward to the event every year. My mom has 2 acres of land so their is quite a bit of planting to be done. Keep making these wonderful and educational videos. I look forward to your acquaintance some day. Best always. Jonathan

Hey Mark! I thought it was weird the other day when you described a meaty flavor to one of the tomatoes but I just had the same sensation on my second ever Brandywine. It was the gnarliest looker with extreme cat-facing and one of the smaller bulbous sections was like an unripe tomato and the bulk of it was pink. It definitely reminded me of sweet jerky or candied bacon. Anyway nice spread you got. Wish I had a cabin in the woods for those 90 degree days!

A walk in the woods = free therapy! I did a bunch of winter hiking this past year which I've never done before and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. No bugs to fight off and like you said, when the leaves are down you can see a lot more and there are trails along the Potomac where the views are even more magnificent in the winter.

You did a great job at following your gut feelings about what you do in this video. This video reminds me of my life growing up in Jamaica 🇯🇲. It's always about hills, woods, rivers and the beautiful beaches. I'm glad you are not using a tractor to drive around it would defeat the purpose of a beautiful stroll in the woods. You are able to take in the beauty of the woods. I really enjoyed being back home traversing those hills on a daily basis. As children we would get the bow of the coconut tree, wet a certain part of the hill going down and the slide down the hill. Whenever you stop, you stop lol it's never really a bother to walk because that's all we've done . It's amazing when you leave your country you seem to appreciate it more. Especially when I see videos like this one, it brings back all of those memories. It seems like it was just yesterday. This is just beautiful, see this is why I tell people even when your living in the tropics in a country area it is not as humid and hot as if you are living in the city in a foreign country. The trees would give you all the shade you need. Don't forget that beautiful breeze that passes through hm my dear thanks alot. It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. I understand the idea of not having Holly girl crossing the street . Thanks much.....

Hi Jody! It's always nice to reminisce. What would life be without those wonderful memories that make you feel good. The coconut bow and sliding down the hill sounds like a lot of fun! Appreciate more.......Jody, I think that goes for most things. When they are gone, you than realize how really wonderful they were. People, pets, places, family...so many things. I try and enjoy, appreciate as much as I can as I pass through life. Time does get away from you so very fast too! Well, thank you so much for watching and of course, commenting too! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. If you like my channel, spread the word too. I would appreciate that! Best, -Mark

Thank you, Mark! We hit 99° today 🥵, triple digits coming through Saturday. 😫 Thanks for bringing us outdoors! Ferns have always been a favorite of mine. Just planted a Lady fern and Silver Falls Fern in my front garden. My parents old house was 16 acres on top of a mountain above the lake. Driving up the mile road was like driving through fern gully. This is where my love for ferns become a passion...it was my favorite house they ever had. It bordered a 600 acre parcel that I use to go run on. Streams, dense forest of pine trees like hemlock, firs, tamaracks, etc. peppered with deciduous trees, ferns, grassy clearings and loads of wild flowers. Such fond memories. Now I just drive a few miles in any direction for a forest hike. Lots of lakes here too that you can overlook from the trails. Waiting til the triple digits disappear! Thoroughly enjoyed seeing this lovely walk. Thanks for sharing your neck of the woods with us! Take good care, Mark. 🙏🏻🙌🏻💞

Beautiful Property! Next time, wear better shoes though....You never know when you may have to run. In addition to bears, coyotes, and foxes, Maryland also has copperheads and timber rattlers. Hey Mark. Great video brother... You're a natural story teller and it shows through the simplicity yet engaging videos you produce. A few comments.. first off that cherry tree although hard to confirm from the video could be a fungi that grows on exposed tree bark. A common practice among bears is to "scratch" trees which then over time creates polypore mushrooms which have been discovered to provide a life saving benefit to bees. Crazy I know! Also Native American Indians did in fact use stones to mark burial sites, mark pathways for herding and ceremonial purposes. But they could also just be piles of rocks lol. I think it would be interesting to plot them all on a land map and see what you have... you might be surprised. Cheers Mark and keep it up.

I love to go hiking through the woods! If I might suggest, you might try getting a metal detector and see what's around those rock piles. You never know what you might find. Maybe relics from the revolutionary war! That would make a great video too!
@scooterdover2771
@scooterdover2771 3 года назад
I don't know about the Revolutionary war, but there were a lot of Civil War battles in MD. The rock piles could be make-shift graves? I suppose it could have been for farming purposes, but the piles wouldn't be all over, as it would defeat the purpose, and the terrain isn't well suited for that.

That heron at the end was cool. Went on a recent kayak trip and they kept flying about 100 yards ahead of us until we caught up to them again. In this way we accumulated more as we went. Saw 5 at once and 3 of them were clearly together (2 herons and one egret). Didn’t know they would form trios like that!

Thanks for the lovely walk in the woods. I live in Atlantic Canada and we have vast woodlands but most are not as user friendly as yours. In many areas here, those stone piles are an indication of where farmers cleared fields. Your mention that a person could lift them , the piles are about the same size, and that they are close together, would suggest they are in what was once a field. They would be close together so the worker wouldn't have to carry them very far.

@marksgardenlife5971
@marksgardenlife5971 3 года назад
Hi GRG! That would be my guess as well and I'm going to have that done. I believe that area most likely has always been woodland because it was logged in the late 70's (prior owner was some greedy doctor who purchased it to develop it) before the parcel was purchased and added to this property to save it from development and apparently had some very old growth timber on it, so the fact it has been sitting there undisturbed (besides being logged) it could well be a burial ground. I haven't counted all the piles, but there are many. I think I'm going to find a expert on that particular sect of Indians and have them look at them also. Thanks for watching and of course commenting too. You have a great week! Take care, -Mark

Hey Mark! Well what can I say, this was a beautiful video, the woods look beautiful, calm, peaceful and relaxing 😌, are the trees there all deciduous Or half and half? The rocks are interesting how they are together like that, maybe it could be an old burial ground but it’s a mystery. The river is also very beautiful, how often do you go for a swim? By any chance is there any type of snake 🐍 or leach in that are? When I go to the woods here I look out for brown snake 🐍 which is one of the top most venomous snakes in the world and there are also wild pigs but you’ll usually see them at night and deer’s 🦌 have spotted as well. The woods that I go to also have fresh drinking water that me and my dad back when I was a kid use to go and fill gallons of drums and take it home. The last time I went to the woods was about 2 weeks ago and I want to go again once the lockdown is over. Also what I love about the woods is on a hot day after a storm the smell of the eucalyptus trees is strong, so fresh and very soothing. Back in 2009 when Australia had one of it’s worst fire 🔥 season and temperatures was close to 120 degrees the woods that I go to ever since I was a kid all got burnt down, after the fires ripped through it hard I went up there and I cried because everything I grew up in was gone and I do have some pictures of that as well but now it has been restored and full of life again, about 147 people perished unfortunately. All I can say Mark is thank you so much for this walk through of the woods it looks soo beautiful there, and yes it is true a great way to get away from everything, when I go back up there I’ll take some some pictures and video of the woods and send them to you, I think you are lucky to live in an area like that and I’m glad that you have that 😃🙌🏼 so again thank you for sharing this walkthrough, and maybe you can do a fall walkthrough the woods when the leaves 🍁 have fall color. Are the rocks in the rock piles all the same kinds common to that area? We had rocks along a ridge on my grandmother's farm that were from far away. I was told that native Americans used the trail along the ridge, and left rocks along the way in their favorite places. My question would be though, why would they be carrying rocks? Kinda heavy when you have ground to cover.

I agree, dreamregent. Also, most of the oldest trees seen during the walk are about the same age. When first settled, they would clear the woods, pull the rocks they could move, and pile them randomly around the field so they could get a horse and plow in there. Might be hard to determine at this point, but keep a lookout for stones of a homestead (small building foundation, stone base for fence posts, etc.) I enjoy the videos, Mark!

Your woods look a lot like what we have here in upstate NY. If I had to guess, I would say that it was also used for logging since it doesn't look like there are really any old-growth trees, same as where I am. As for mushrooms, we've done shiitakes in maple logs. It takes some playing around to get the conditions just right. We have a lot of rock piles here too, and I know some are remnants of old property line markers. We have bands of rock piles that probably looked like walls at one point.
@marksgardenlife5971
@marksgardenlife5971 3 года назад
Hi! Last time it was logged was forty some years ago, so no, no old growth trees except along the steep hill where they could not log. Shiitakes....Interesting. I've read about using oak or maple logs and stacking them like you would a log cabin and drilling holes in them. Do you use green wood or older downed logs? These rock piles are all in the same general area and not in any kind of lines or order. I've seen many old stone walls up in Vermont. Thanks for the info, watching and commenting too! Have a great evening! -Mark
@alaaaaaaaaaaaan
@alaaaaaaaaaaaan 3 года назад
@@marksgardenlife5971 For shiitakes, we inoculated fresh maple logs with sawdust spawn. We have plenty of maple on the property. Since we *aren't* farmers, our caring for them was far from perfect throughout the years in terms of providing the perfect conditions. It was more like a slow burn for us. Last year was 5-7 years since we inoculated the first logs, and as you can imagine they're pretty close to being completely decomposed now. But they put out a huge flush almost like a grand finale. The random shiitake will still pop up from time to time. I've also grown wine caps in fresh wood chips outdoors, and shiitake, oyster, lion's mane, and reishi in inoculated wood chip bags. Field & Forest has always been my personal go-to for mushroom spawn.
