@@marksgardenlife5971 I did enjoy it... Good stuff..... I have always used the fiji's and gala's in my salads. The tarts like granny's for pies and tarts... I'm glad you found the video helpful. I'm not sure about sexy farmer, but I'll take it as a compliment. lol Send me an email and I'll send you a sexy farmer picture! lol
Hey Steven! It is nice going right to the orchard. I have to agree. The video......Steven, you're very welcome! Thanks for watching! All the best, -Mark
You are a lucky lucky man getting to taste so many different apples, especially since you got to eat one of my all time favorites, Golden Russet. I haven't had the pleasure of eating one in 20 odd years but I can easily recall the flavor, I wish I could find an orchard that would ship them. I'm not a fan of the crisp types (although I do like Pink Lady). For me there is no finer apple for eating out of hand than Jonamac, followed closely by Golden Russet (which is also good for baking, IME) then Cortland, Macoun, and McIntosh. For making homemade applesauce, I like using either Stayman or Winesap, both of which store well and the flavor gets better with them after about 2 months in storage. For making a pie, I like a blend of Jonathan and Rome. (obviously I'm more into heirloom varieties)
Hi Michael! You sound like a real apple connoisseur! I did like the Golden Russet. The combination for apple pie sounds great. Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
Seriously, from my perspective this the most fantastic video ever, thank's Mark! I don't mind a mealy apple fresh, but when it gets 'mealy', I don't care for it.
What a great idea to do a taste test for so many Apples. I love this. Thanks for taking the time to make it so nice. I love these taste test video's. Keep them up.
Boy, I sure was full after watching you eat all those apples Mark! Another great job. I’ve seen a few of the types of apples you tested however haven’t yet tried. Now I’m ready to expand my apple tasting! By the way, if you like to bake or have someone bake apple pies for you, instead of cinnamon in the tart apples I use cardamom. It’s great!
Hi Dennis! Boy, did I have my fill of apples that afternoon! lol Glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you! My mom bakes apple pies for me and I'm gonna have her try that. Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks for watching! All the best, -Mark
Been missing your videos. I know this time of year can be hectic. I hope you’re well. Looking forward to seeing a new video soon. Happy Holidays to you and your family Mark! Ryan
Hi Derek! Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the apple tasting video. As long as you guys keep watching, I'll keep making them! Thanks for watching and I really do appreciate your comments too!] All my very best, -Mark
Wonderful video Mark!!! Pink Lady and Honey Crisp are my favorite eating apples, but i have not been lucky enough to taste test like you...i like the crispiness and sweetness without tasting like sugar water in my eating apples...glad to see you soon.
Great, great video! I loved it. I would also love one based on antique varieties of apples, the ones who stored well and filled the house with a wonderful scent. New varieties seem to have lost this fragrance. I also agree with you and like crispy and tart apples like granny smith.
I'm glad you liked it! Thank you! Antique apples are difficult to find and Greg has many, but finding them for viewers would probably be next to impossible. Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
Great content, between this and the balloon ride, this is becoming my favorite garden channel! I will be looking for some of these uncommon varieties at my farmers market and, twist my arm, make a lot of crisps to test myself how well they bake up!
Hi Steve! I try and keep it diverse. Thank you! You'll have to let me know your favorites for crisp. Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
Hi Linda! Yes, but I just wish it wasn't 23 at once! lol I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you! Thanks for watching too! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
Hey Dan! I'm glad you approve! lol Apple season started here about 3 months ago, so now we are getting into late season. Thanks for watching! All my best, -Mark
@@marksgardenlife5971 It's not surprising that you started 3 months ago. We got some off our young James Grieve (Edinburgh 1893) apple and I used them in making blackberry jam. Slainte!
Wonderful video, Mark! Thanks for doing the hard work for us! Some of those varieties are totally unkown while others are quite familiar. I'm on the hunt for several of those come the Farmers' Market here in Baltimore tomorrow. Excellent job! You win again!
Such a great video. You have such an earnestness and sincerity that I very much enjoy. I’m not at all sure how you ate all of that (lol), but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing.
Hi! I'm glad you liked the apple tasting. Thank you for the kind words too! I wasn't sure I'd get through eating a piece of 23 apples and I have to admit it was getting a little more difficult in the end, but I can say this, I didn't want any more apples for another day. lol Thanks for watching! If things need to be said I'll say them LOL. We have some great orchards near me (Yes near the desert LOL) ANd I havn't but should run to them just for the ambience of Fall. Which I LOVE. Originally from the East coast and that was my favorite season. And apples were always part of that.

Hey William! I bet that was good too! Thank you! I'm glad you found the apple tasting helpful. Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All the best, -Mark
I've never heard of most of the varieties here in Germany, except Golden Delicious is a long grown, well-known breed here. Pink Lady and Braeburn are grown commercially lately, too. Though my favorite varieties would be Gravensteiner, Cox Orange, Transparent and Prince Albrecht of Prussia.
Mark, I enjoyed this video so much as it reminded me of that apple tasting back at the World Trade Center and that there are so many varieties for so many individual tastes.... I wrote down 10 varieties that I want to try and find now in Vermont.. yet I really have to look hard for the Golden Russet as you took at least 4 bites out of that variety so it must be exceptional! After that # 2 and three will be the Stayman. Thanks again.. you will not eat again for another 2 days!
Hey Kenn! I'm glad you found the apple tasting helpful. It may be a little more limited up there as far as varieties you can find. I shot that video straight through and I've gotta admit by the end I was getting full of apples! lol We had our first frost this week down here! Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
WOW...what an awesome video. I knew there was alot of varaities out there but you had some I have never heard of. I go to a few orchards here in the fall but only one has my favorite apple and thats the jonagold. It is actually across the state line in michigan. best orhcard around here. Use them for baking pies during the holidays. Also just a good eating apple. thanks for giving it a 4. I personally would have given it a 5 but thats ok....lol.......should've had your side kick there. Im sure she would love your left overs. My little ones love apples. Dont forget the wash the apples down with the bud light lime in the fridge behind you........take care keep the videos coming

Hey Ian! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Of course, this time of year gardening subject matter is limited, but I'll do some holiday related videos. Thanks for asking Ian. What part of the country are you located? All the best, -Mark
Hi Mark. Besides being the "Apple of Everyone's Eye" you really brought a great video on apples to the surface. Thank you for sharing. Who knew their were this many kinds of apples and more growing on our delicious planet. I believe apples have been around since Biblical times when Adam and Eve were convinced by a snake in a tree to eat an apple from the Tree of Life (the rest is history!). Do tell - how are so many apples introduced in the past few decades and become marketable? Would love to know how growers create and produce unique kinds of apples. Anyhow, what a great apple tasting video. You never cease to amaze your viewers. BTW ... be on the lookout for a package for your wonderful dogs. Best always from across the miles here in NYC. Jonathan
Hey Jonathan! Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching. New apple varieties are sometimes sports on a existing apple tree or crosses between existing apples trees. I'm sure some videos disappoint some viewers, but can't win them all! lol Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
Hi Arelette! Thank you! I'm happy you liked it. Apples are supposed to be very healthy for you as well. Holly.....she just hit 90 pounds! Shes' going to be a big girl. She's doing fine too. All this crazy warm weather I'm in Ohio by lake Erie. My dafodils ARE pushing through the soil. Usually thats in the middle of February for me. Crazy year.
Hi Mark how are you doing? I hope you're doing well. First i would like to say i didn't know that there was so many type's of apple's, that is so cool, second there was a part that when you were going to cut the apple and you were reading from you're sheet that it looked like you were about to cut you're finger and i was like oh noo please no lol, i also like to hard crisp type apples, and no need to be sorry i love you're videos no matter what goes on :) there great and real and you made me laugh at times when you looked like you where starting to get full, for some reason every time i eat at least one apple it makes me fill full so i could imagine how full you must have been lol. Great video Mark i very mush enjoyed it no matter how long it is. How are Holly and Annie going, i miss seeing them :) We have been getting crazy weather here with big storms a lot or rain and some flooding in parts and the temperatures have been up and down and this week it is down like in the high 50's mid to high 60's also about %90 of Australia is going to have soo much rain this week that there are widespread flood warnings including here where i live. Do you remember when i said that we may get the La Nina well it is here now and that is why Australia is now starting to get soo much rain and flooding with more to come during the next few months. Hows the weather going there? Have you gotten the first freeze yet? I will be sending you some pictures of what is growing at my place soon :) I hope you have a great week and looking forward to the next video. Best Gabby PS sorry for the long message lol
I’m with you as I do like crisp firm more tart. I love Royal Gala from New Zealand (although traveling from there makes them more expensive and they don’t last as long). I have been won over by Honey Crisp which I only discovered later in life.
You were saying about waste due to such a large harvest. But hopefully the excess could be used for juice, cider (including hard cider), canning, pies etc.
Brilliant Mark, love your videos, this is awesome indeed and thanks for the fantastic array of apples that your neighbours harvest, air use apples every day in meals, keep safe Sir
Hey Anthony! Glad you are enjoying the videos. Thanks for watching as always! I hope you found a few new varieties to try. Have a great day! All my best, -Mark
Mark's Garden Life yes our last property had about 5000 Apple and Pear trees which we sold at market, and made lots of apple pies of course, all good here thanks, beautiful autumn Sunday
Hey Scott! I know! lol I thought about editing out the reaching for the apples, but I thought it may loose something than, so I didn't. I also thought about pre-slicing, but than I had to worry about yellowing on some by the time I tried them. Just can't win! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
Nice guide. Thank you for that! I'm like you, Mark, in that I too love crisp, tart apples. All too often I don't know what to buy if I don't recognize the varieties on offer. Sometimes I'll just buy one or two of a few varieties, figure out what I like, then go back and buy what I like. I'm guessing your stomach was feeling a bit queasy after all that tasting?
Hey Doug! Glad the tasting was helpful. Thanks for watching! After eating a bite out of 23 apples without stopping, yes I had enough of apples for the day! lol Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
Many of those are new to me. But out of the ones I do know Pink Lady has always been my favorite! I have heard of another variety I think its called Mcintosh and it's suppose to be very crisp and tart..have u tried that one before?

What an inspiring video! Me and friends were relaxing when this posted.we went out and got apples and had our own apple tasting. Yum! We even made snacks.Apples and peanut butter and honey. Thanks Mark You made our night🥰
Hi Mark: I appreciate these taste tests you do because I don't know all of the varieties that are available out there. I prefer the red delicious but it MUST be firm and not too sweet.
Hi Donald! I'm glad you are enjoying the tastings. Red Delicious are good until they age a little to much or have improper storage temps. You may want to try a few of the others in that category too. Thanks for watching! All the best, -Mark
Johnathan is our apple pie pick and also fried.Being raised in Kentucky I'm from folks that loves fried apples. Famous red delicious are just too sweet for myself.Johnath Golds for fresh eating or Rome.
Hey guys! I bet it's good! I don't get to much of a chance to bake anymore, but I'll look it up and get my mom to try it. Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
Here in the UK there is an apple similar to Golden Russet, called Cox's Orange Pippin, it was always one of the most popular sellers but I don't think quite so common now, although you can still buy them. Gala and Braeburn are the two most sold now in the big supermarkets. I have the same nostalgia about Red Delicious, my grandma used to come into the room and present one to me, like the witch in Snow White. haha. They were always huge, and from the USA or Canada.
Interesting. I wonder why the UK is importing apples from elsewhere? What part of the UK are you located? I'm going to fly over for a month either 2022 or 2023 and film with some of you're popular garden youtubers and at some of the estate gardens. -Mark
@@marksgardenlife5971 I'm from the far north of England, near Scotland. There is certainly plenty of fantastic gardens throughout Britain. Some are privately owned and opened to the public, many others are part of the National Trust, which is the largest heritage and conservation charity in the country. As for apples, the American apples are not very common now, this was many years ago. Most apples are from the UK or France, then out of season from South Africa and New Zealand. The UK lost many old orchards in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
Cox's Orange is one of my favorite apple varieties becauce of its destinct spicy taste. Unfortunatly, you don't see it as often here in Germany, where it tends to get some diseases due to the lack of mild and moist climate compared to England. I ones went to the 'Fruit Logistica' - a specialized trade fair in Berlin with thousands of exhibitors, mainly Europaen: I found it pretty boring. At numberous booths you could see the same 6 or 10 varieties of apples over and over again, all the same size and shape.
Great video. I would love to stroll thru that orchard. I found a guy local here selling Ginger Gold which I found very appealing. Makes great Apple Sauce. I have been searching for a source to purchase but without much luck. I you have any idea where I might look, pleeeaaaassse let me know. Thanks for making us aware of so many different varieties. Cheers Mark!!!!
Hi Billy! Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. Walking through an orchard is great with all the scents. I bet Ginger Gold does make great apple sauce. I think people tend to get stuck with the same varieties and don't make an effort to try others that they may like much better, so I hope that encourages some of that. I guess do a net search for your local orchards, markets. Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
I find it really amusing that you're on an apple farm, but there is one solitary lonely apple just chilling out in that huge empty fridge with a bottle of water and six-pack.
Around the corner is a huge walk in ref. with lots of apples! lol The six pack is for after you get done picking apples at the end of the day. lol Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
I'm pretty sure some of the apples you show are not available to the public to grow....they're managed brands that only orchards are allowed to grow for resale, and when trees are purchased, they buyer must pay a royalty fee to the breeder. Also, The flavor of late apples and long storing apples don't develop their best taste until well into storage. Some of the russeted apples are underrated, but they're really great, but usually not immediately after they were picked, they take a little time to develop the flavor. The tough skin is the downside, but even that softens with storage age.
You are probably right about some of the varieties as far as being able to find for the homeowner. Some varieties are like fine wine, they get better with some aging. That really is true! Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All my best, -Mark
Is it just me or was it mostly the 'old' varieties that got the best reviews from you? I love a nice crisp apple as well, mealie ones just feel wrong in the mouth. I would love to be able to try some of the really old varieties from the UK or Europe.
My favorite apple for fresh eating and for pie is Jonathan. If I can't find them, then the Fugi is next best thing. I would like to try some of the older varieties you showed in the video, but here in corn and soybean country, there doesn't seem to be much variety in apples beyond the most common ones. I'll probably offend some people by saying this, but I find red and yellow delicious apples to be rather bland.
I have to agree with you about the red and yellow delicious. I like a little different flavor and crunch as I said in the beginning of the video. Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend! All the best, -Mark
Side by side comparisons make a valuable video. At least viewers can gain 1 or 2 people's opinions. I'm having nine old spruces taken down next week. I may have to look for some bareroot Cameo apple trees to go in their place next spring... and then persuade someone else into baking me some pies. lol
Hi Wayne! I have to agree. The side by side comparisons are so much better. The Cameos are nice and I have to do the same when I want apple pie too! (Or learn to do it myself!) Thanks for watching! All the best, -Mark

@@marksgardenlife5971 It is not that, it is that for one thing that there is in which we are the best, well I say it🍽💪 🌎 I made you a huge list of excellent Spanish dishes and I could still go on, but I'm tired of it. Do you think the USA is the best in the world? what I see most are hamburgers and hot dogs🤔
The US is a mix of food from many different cultures. Never traveling outside the US except to Canada I really can't comment on how other countries foods are in general. Yeah, we definitely have our share of junk food! lol
@@marksgardenlife5971 Looking at the USA from the point of view that it is a melting pot of cultures, of course then it is the most varied. But I was referring to its own typical popular gastronomy "if it can be said that the USA has it", and that is the one I already mentioned, McDonald's everywhere. Of course there will be innovative people in the kitchen there, but the vision it conveys is not that, it conveys a feeling of being repetitive and not very varied "too many McDonald's". Incomparable to the Mediterranean gastronomy (and more that of Spain), which has an excellent preparation of ingredients and is also generally healthy🍽💪 Look, I will mention Italian cuisine, for being quite famous for being the best in the world, because Spanish without being so famous, I can assure you that it is even better. The Italian is based too much on pizza, pasta and lasagna, (which is very good all that), but at the moment of truth it is more limited than the Spanish. The Greek "how little I have felt", they also say is very good, this one I have not yet checked much, I would have to go deeper, because I do not know too many Greek dishes yet. With the Greek, I think it is the same as with the Spanish, which is not very famous, and yet it is also very good. Perhaps the Greek would be a better competitor for the Spanish than the Italian. 🤔 The one from Mexico is also very good and famous, but there is a lot that I don't see too healthy, so the Spanish one has one more plus again. Really, if you came to Spain, you would be surprised to see what is here🍽😲 I left you an extensive list of Spanish products and dishes, when I log off I can't see it, I hope you can at least. Good video of apples and greetings from Spain🇪🇸💪
