On the hillside, overlooking the City of Bradford, sits Undercliffe Cemetery. Created between 1851 to 1854, this cemetery houses the rich and famous from Bradford in the Victorian Era.... mill owners, mayor's, MPs, laundry owners, and more. Each family vault seems to try to best and outdo the other in their elaborate designs.
Today, we have a walk through the graveyard and look at just a selection of the 23 000 graves in the cemetery, as well as a scene from a very famous Bradford set film of the 1960s.

Also the 4 Smith Brothers who sadly lost their lives within the same week died from Scarlet Fever, just one of the many diseases from the Victorian Era. A number of children died of these diseases before their 5th birthday . Very sad indeed. Thankfully today we have the modern medication to prevent these diseases .. Also just to mention there are over 200 Military Graves in this graveyard 👍⚘ Thanks for showing us this video Matt. Very interesting and we learn alot from past mill owners etc from the Victorian era ... 🙂👍

Great stuff as always. I often think of cemeteries as great works of art, like an 'installation' that took many years to evolve and mature, and then you can walk through and discover all the fine and sometimes mysterious architecture, especially on the Victorian memorials. Some of the bigger ones being like mini buildings or pieces that resemble bits of gothic style churches. If we could just travel back in time and see some of these Victorian Era characters buried here, but not sure I would want to stay in that era and try to survive, but hold tight the 'back to the future' ticket and come back to now!!

Thanks a lot. It's a really brearhtaking cemetery, like you say, full of mini buildings as opposed to gravestones. My go to 'time travel' has always been local area 1890...just to see the mills in action for one thing, but yeah, take a camera and pack all necessary medication for the day. Thanks for watching 😊

Thanks for the video Mat. Took me back a bit watching this, I was fascinated by a visit there I made just under 3 decades ago. Btw a Stuff Merchant was a dealer of woven fabrics, generally woollen cloth.
