Rick Housley is currently a first-year engineering student at Stevens Institute of Technology. He graduated from Boston University Academy in May of 2012. At the age of 18, he signed an assignment agreement with a medical device company for IP and technology to develop and detect convulsive seizures.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I can't tell you how valuable this gadget would be. My fiance had his first seizure recently. It was so severe that his convulsions alone caused him to break his back, dislocate and break his shoulder, and break two ribs. He was alone at the time so we have no idea how long the seizure continued to cause so much damage. As you can imagine, we are very concerned about leaving him alone. Your gadget would provide such a sense of relief and freedom.

It doesn't take very long to hurt yourself really bad it depends on how you drop and what you hit on the way down the harder I hit my head they usually last longer

One of the best things about this device is that it tells the time. That means that you're not wearing a "medical device" you're wearing a watch. Now, if the social stigma of epilepsy weren't (almost) as debilitating as the condition itself, this wouldn't matter, and it REALLY shouldn't matter, but it does, so it is. Oh btw, I presume this device will be EXTREMELY robust, i.e. as Toughbook is to ipad, as this device is to dress watch. I've often wondered tho' if there isn't something that could detect the conditions that lead to the abnormal firing of neurons that ARE a seizure and sets off an alarm, so that you can get yourself out of danger-ish.

Very awe inspiring! Would love to help test it just to know if it could help others! Any plans to advance it for petit mal/ non-convulsive seizures with a algorithm for a lack of motion in comparison to previous motion within a time frame?

But you can't have a good prediction for different patients... You need to train your model on every individual person with epilepsy

He said it can adapt to the patient so it could help treat individual patients better hopefully.

As someone who has had multiple seizures at home while alone the last of which was 3 weeks ago I woke up in the bathtub feeling like I got beaten by 10 guys and couldn't pull myself out of the bathtub and get to my phone for over 2 hours it is a horrible thing to have happen but honestly even with someone home I'm 270 pounds and a little over 6 foot I look like an NFL linebacker and my wife can't roll me very well I wish there was something that triggered my muscle to help roll me on my side because I had to teach my wife how to use a 2×4 to roll me using leverage and it ends up hurting my ribs

is it too far away in our lifetimes to prevent seizures

It’s a good idea but not everyone with epilepsy has the seizures who have tonic clonic on the ground like me there is all kinds of seizures. I have the ones where you stare off into space why can’t he help everyone, bc there’s not just 1 seizure just like people judge me to

I like the ted talk but Nick Housley you need to do more research because there are over 40 different kinds of seizure including staring spells where you just stop moving and freeze up.

He didn't state that his device is capable of detecting "all seizures" he said it's possible to detect convulsive ones

Can non-epileptic seizure lead to epileptic seizure if the become severe and frequent?
@marcinpl1989

Everyone has 1 seizure in their lifetime. But, if you have more than one like a pattern consult with a doctor. I'm 26 I've had seizures since I was 2 years old
