Shooting film doesn't have to be difficult or intimidating. Start out simple and see for yourself how magical the experience is. Something I didn't mention in the video if you're just starting out. You can almost never lose by overexposing your film photos. The highlights are super flexible. Nearly the opposite of digital. All of my work is scanned at indiefilmlab.com

I don’t think the Leica is going out of business ever Most of the people who have Leica are faithful they don’t think about the price. I have a friend have a Leica and is not a professional photographer he just love it.

Hey! Great video! What are your opinions on shooting with let’s say a Canon AE-1 versus the one you have? I’ve been shooting film for about a year now and just recently got the AE-1P which is nice with that auto mode. Is your EOS 1 quicker / more durable? Is the quality better or is it still dependent on film and processing and such? I was asked to shoot a small, very casual and aesthetically pleasing elopement in the woods of Maine at an A Frame cabin and my current cameras are AE-1, AE-1P and AT-1 and seeing your camera is making me nervous like what I have is not enough lol any advice or words of encouragement? I’m very comfortable with my cameras but I’m used to the security a DSLR gives me in regards to being able to overshoot as much as I want / editing / minimal if any mechanical issues!

Liked, and here's a comment - don't get glass envy. The Zeiss glass is amazing. The Leica glass is great. But so is the Cosina glass, whether it's the Zeiss branded or Voigtländer branded. Remember, a lot of wedding photographers are using that same brand in Sony E mount on an A7 series. They are nothing to sniff at! As a working photographer, I'm sure you always apply the cost to benefit test - will a Leica Summilux give you a financial benefit of the $3000 to $6000 it will cost you? Will it give you a joy-equivalent benefit to that amount? As far as a flash gun goes, you have a TTL, looking at the shutter dial. This camera won't work with the tiny Fujifilm and Contax flash units that are popular on older film M's - because the communications pins cause issues with each other. Unfortunately, you can only use either very-old single pin flash guns - which may damage the electronics if the voltage is too high - or use modern Leica and specially Leica-compatible flash units. The current one I like is the Leica SF-40, which is also available as the Nissin i40 for your Canon kit at only half the price of the Leica version. The "official" flash for your camera was the SF-20, but while it's thinner front to back, it's taller than the SF-40 and can't be bounced or anything useful like that.

Nice video man. I grew up on film and developed my own black and white prints etc. etc. You absolutely don't need to be a pro to shoot film. It was all we had in the day so every Tom Dick and Harry shot film, pro or not. I was shooting film from 10 years of age man, hardly anything to be snobbish about. The Nikon D700 got me into digital and I thought yay! no more chemical developing. I still love both film and digital although with scanned negatives the computer has replaced the dark room which is brilliant. Its funny, when I was developing film I had no inclination to go back and take pictures with glass plates etc. like the `old folk' did. Just too hard man. But this generation still likes film which is brilliant. I think if we still needed to chemically develop prints film may not have made a come back. Digital scanning makes the overall process much simpler. This might be what `saved' film. As I said I grew up on film and I still love film but like you I don't know why. I have no nostalgia at all. I think it is the `care about every frame thing.' It gives photography more meaning when you care about it more, like anything. Like life. Anyway, something....... hard to put my finger on it.

Well-made and informative video, with just the right amount of (exquisite 😝) humour. I'm trying to get into film photography - I have a Pentax Spotmatic SP and some great M42 lenses - but things fall apart at the development and scanning part. It's costing me 16 bucks for development and scanning some low-res JPEGS, so I'm missing out on quality big-time and I can't afford to invest in my own development and scanning equipment.

Film and digital are simply methods of recording an image. The camera and lens combination is the conduit by which the viewed image is formed and transmitted to the medium. Anyone who believes there is an advantage in shooting film has obviously come to photography via the digital medium. For many, many years film was the only medium and cameras were chosen for a job on the basis of two things. The suitability of the equipment to physically match the subject and the film format to gain the required quality. The advent of digital technology completely changed photography. For more years than I care to remember I shot a multitude of subjects on film using large format (5x4) , medium format (6x7, 6x6 and 6x4.5) and miniature format (35 mm). When digital first started to appear I resisted the pressures to change from film. I simply believed it was just a phase and it would never be able to replace film. I eventually decided to give it a try and sold one of my film bodies to help fund it. Being an old guy who had no experience of computers it was an extremely steep learning curve for me but I struggled on, always of course keeping at least one film body in reserve. That film body was soon returned to its box and that is where it remains to this day. Not only is there nothing I could do with film that I cannot do with digital; I can also do so much more with digital and a lot easier too. Film is at best now an interesting historical process which may well be an attractive hobby but in my opinion is a totally pointless medium. My only concern with digital is the constantly changing storage formats. My huge collection of negatives and transparencies will last forever as long as I store them correctly whereas I do worry about digitally stored images. I have shot film, I have lived with the limitations of both the equipment and the medium itself. I have suffered the anxiety of having to wait to see the result of a shoot, the restriction of having only 10, 12, 15 shots on a roll of medium format film or 24, 36 on SLR's. I have had to live with the extremely limited exposure latitude of transparency film and the associated problems of getting a correct exposure. I have also had an immense amount of satisfaction from shooting on film and working in a dark room, watching the magic when an image appeared in a tray of developer. Do I wish to return to those days? Absolutely not. My last film body, a Canon EOS3, will remain in its box to be shown to my grandchildren . I do have a desire to purchase a display cabinet and fill it with an example of every type of camera I have owned but they will serve only to illustrate my photographic journey. I learned my trade through the difficult medium of film and now totally embrace the multitude of advantages that comes with digital.

The word "Film" has a different experience/meaning between old timers and Analog children. While it is the same cameras that were used in the past, but we traveled in a different path. For the Analog Children, it is easy to pick up a top end, used film camera for a song (but generally not the similar digital models, such as the M10, 1Dx II, D5 or X1D), to discover film. Since the simple B&W processing and printing can be an eye opening for all of us, so this trend can be a great learning and discovery process. As for the old timers, some of us had to learn photography inside our bedrooms, from books or courses. It took years and more money than today's cost of film and processing. But what was not generally known or discussed was that even four decades ago, we could shoot film at 10 fps using the Nikon F2HS with 250/750 bulk exposures back (no need to slow down); the "Bullet-proof" Nikon F overtook Leica and probably more buyers for the similar expensive Hasselblad; wasted time in the darkroom to print a few prints in colors; instant preview was possible with a Polaroid Back; follow focus with our feet; carrying two to three big and heavy camera, lens & flash; shooting with slides; finding a space to serve as a color darkroom and worked in complete darkness; etc. As a trend, film can be known as the good old days, but it can be a reminder for some old timers that it was a money pit, time wasting and a lonely & slow learning process that didn't offer much over digital.

What did the janitor say when they jumped out the closet? - SUPPLIES! Great video, Eric, thanks! Is portra400 your go to film or do you shoot any other type?
@EricFloberg
@EricFloberg 4 года назад
HA! Thanks so much, Oliver! Yes, Portra 400 is always my go-to, and I splurge on Portra 800 and Fuji 400H every once in a while.

This is great. So inspiring. I did traditional photo years ago and have been wanting to get back into it. Thanks for sharing.

Videos like this make me want to do more film photography because it's just a humble and talented guy having a conversation about it and not some pretentious hipster lecturing me on how to shoot it properly. Keep it up Eric.

Hey Eric! Another awesome video, I’ve been looking into a point and shoot film camera and will definitely check those out. If you don’t mind me asking, what lab do you use to develop your film?
@EricFloberg

Thanks Tom! I develop everything at indiefilmlab.com :)

Are you going to start using film to shoot weddings? Weddings on film are my personal favorite!
@EricFloberg
@EricFloberg 4 года назад
Nah, I may take a few film frames here and there at weddings, but I would never want the pressure of not screwing up wedding frames (as I do frequently with film rolls haha). That, and the riskiness of sending it in the mail to be processed freaks me out if it were someone's wedding.

I would LOVE for you to release a video on how you colour correct / what LUTs you use for both video and photo editing, absolutely blown away by the way it always looks
@EricFloberg
@EricFloberg 4 года назад
Man, I'd love to as well, but since my LUT is so customized, it wouldn't be super helpful. I do have my go-to presets in my description, but there are big plans for creating my own presets/LUTs, so when that time comes, I'll definitely be making those how-to videos. Thanks for the support!!
