Thank You for this nice video. Your Kadett have DGF on your swedish license plate. In Germany ist DGF for the district Dingolfing-Landau in Niederbayern (in the north east of munich). With the best regards from Chiemgau

Happy memories of this model of car in the 1960s and 1970s. My dad bought it in 1964 when I was five years old, and he gave it to me in 1982. I kept it till 1988 and sold it. It was perfect and I am sorry to have sold it.

We had a '64 1000 Caravan (wagon), fun little car with lots of memories over my Mom's two-years ownership. We took an 1800-mile trip over the Christmas holiday in 1965, ignition points failed in the middle of nowhere in Florida, but a local shade-tree mechanic adapted the points from a Volkswagen Beetle to work. I remember a day trip to the highest point in Georgia in caravan with another family who were riding in a VW Type 3 squareback sedan. The squareback overheated and had to be towed back to Atlanta, but the Opel never faltered. I took music lessons and one day as we were leaving the teacher's house, his Saint Bernard jumped into the driver's window. Fortunately, we were stopped... We had planned a trip to my grandparents' house in summer of '66, a small town in rural Mississippi, and Mom took the Opel to the dealer for service. She saw a small add-on air conditioner at the service writers' desk and called my Dad to tell him she was having it installed. He told her not to do a thing 'til she got there. She drove out in a brand-new Buick Special DeLuxe with a V8 and three-on-the-tree. And factory air. In later years she remembered every car she ever owned, but had forgotten the Opel when I asked her about it until I pulled out pictures of it in an Atlanta snow.

The front fenders and headlight trim look more like a '63. As I recall, the '64 had square headlight nacelles and the fender peaks were less pronounced. My Mom had a '64 Kadett 1000 Caravan (wagon) and we had some family adventures over those two years. Ever had a Saint Bernard jump into the car through the driver's window? Happened when we were leaving my trombone tutor's house, his dog got out and followed us up the driveway.

If my history is right. Opel didnt make a car with square headlights til the C-series in the 70's The Kadett A only had round headlights. As it was the standard Still cool history

@@johnssonsmixed8303 I remember these cars when they were new in the US market. The _B_ series ('65-'67) had the square headlight trim, but the square trim was illustrated in the year-specific owner's manual for Mom's '64 wagon. My Dad bought a '70 Kadett two-door sedan, a remarkably austere examble of the _C_series introduced in model year 1968. That car replaced a thoroughly worn-out Studebaker Lark. The '70 Opel didn't even have an interior dome light, not even one on a manual switch. The headlight treatment on that generation in the US market had a trim filler apparently intended to resemble the vertical rectangular quartz-iodine composite European-spec Mercedes (and presumably Opel, too). There were two recalls on the '70 that I remember. The second dealt with sharp retaining screws for the taillights that could puncture the gas tank which was set within the rear fender. The first referred to defective clips for the windshield. Pop's reply was, "I'd rather go out behind the windshield than through it." There are images on Google for the '64 Kadett _A_ models identifying both the outboard round headlights set into the fenders and the inboard square trim set in the grille under fenders with less pronounced peaks. I remember that in Mom's car the front seatbacks didn't fold forward: instead, the entire seat folded forward on a hinge-type assembly at the touvh of a lever-pedal on a latch at the rear. Also (weird) you could take the key out of the ignition lock in the _OFF_ position without locking the switch. This was useful for valet parking, but dumb for theft deterrence. I remember an 1800-mile road trip through the southeast, must have been winter of '65, and in the middle of the Florida peninsula miles from the nearest service station and the nearest Buick dealer was closed for the weekend, the car just shut down, turned out the points had broken. A shade-tree mechanic pulled up (my Dad was recovering from surgery for an aortic aneurism, lifting and exertion restrictions) checked the problem, and modified a used set of VW points to work to limp home.

Recalling that 1800-mile trip, I remember Mom keeping pace with the 70 mile-per-hour Interstate traffic in the days when the Interstates were new.

Hi, your Kadett A is beautiful. My father had a 1962, also with the small engine and also in white, which he drove until 1973 and replaced it with a Kadett B. I was driven in the Kadett A for the first 7 years of my life, but unfortunately I can't remember that🙁 You write, that you only drive the Kadett up to 75 km/h. But that's not good for the engine and the rest of the car's technology. You can also drive the Kadett up to 100 km/h, its top speed is 120 km/h. It's also good for the engine if the Kadett is driven longer periods of time and tours, so that everything is warmed up well and the engine can burn off the residue from the "cold" short-distance journeys. It's a vehicle to drive and not a vehicle to stand, as I always say! I have several Citroën GS and GSA from 1978, 1980 and 1982 and other Citroëns from the 80s and sometimes I drive them on long tours at speeds of up to 130 km/h. They like that and run better afterwards, because all the residue in the engine has been burned off and "everything is free".🙂 Only short journeys, where the engine is not warmed up properly, are not good. And that actually applies to all cars - old or new!!! Have a good trip with the Kadett A and best regards☺☺

Thank you! It was my grandpa who told me to not go faster than 75km/h because he mentioned that driving at higher speeds will prematurely wear out the engine. And I really don't want to do that. It's such a lovely car! Also. The Citroën GS and GSA have bigger engines and more power. They can handle driving fast for longer periods
@citroen-fan
@citroen-fan 6 месяцев назад
@@johnssonsmixed8303 Many thanks for your answer. Your grandpa is only partly right, because he remembers it from the past, when engines didn't have oil filters and engine oils weren't as well developed as they are today. As far as I know, the engine of the Kadett A has an oil filter and can also be driven normally with the appropriate engine oil. The engine was built for many decades and was even offered in the Kadett D and the Corsa A in the 1980s and is considered to be long-lasting. Even though it only has 40 hp, you can drive the Kadett A up to 100 km/h, at least for a short time on the highway, after the engine has warmed up. It is more comfortable - for the car and the driver - to drive at a speed of 80 - 90 km/h, but not only. As already written, warming up at varying speeds over longer distances is better for the engine than just short distances at up to 75 km/h. And this applies to all cars - old and new. This rule hasn't changed since the 1950s, when cars became fully throttle-proof, and is still valid since today. Once I had a Citroen 2 CV (called a "duck" in Germany) from the late 1980s with 28 PS and a Citroen Ami 6 from 1962 with 21,5 PS, which could also be driven up to 100 km/h and it didn't bother them. Normally I drove both of these cars at 80 - 90 km/h without any problems. And once I drove the Citroen Ami 6 to the Auvergne in France, a distance of 1.200 km from my home in Germany, without any problems. My experience has been, that people don't trust classic-cars as much as they can and that's pity. Of course you shouldn't overdo it... I wish you a good trip with the Kadett and many breakdown-free km!

@@citroen-fan Very good information actually. Now, the Kadett has been sold to a bigger Opel enthusiast who actually drive it more often than I did. They're a great guy who takes it on long drives throughout Europe and takes it motor shows around the EU. I on the other hand drive my 1988 Daihatsu charade nearly every day. Mainly short trips but I am planning to drive it to the Netherlands this summer, about 1100 km one way. Top speed is 145 km/h but I think I'll keep to about 80-90 km/h since I think it wouldnt last doing 100-120 the entire trip like most other cars. And I'll also try the smaller roads through Germany since I do want to experience and explore more of Germany's smaller towns and cities along the way.
@citroen-fan
@citroen-fan 6 месяцев назад
@@johnssonsmixed8303 The sale of the Kadett is pity, but it seems to got into good hands. So, you still have a 1988 Daihatsu Charade. This car is very rare here in Germany, I don't know if I've ever seen one on the streets. I only remember the charade from the 1977 - 1981 model series, where the 3-door model has the round window in the C-pillar. Will we get to see a video of the charade here in youtube? It's great, that you are planning a trip to the Netherlands and want to drive mainly on smaler roads. You can see more of everything there than on the highway. It takes longer, but you get to see more of the country you're driving through! It is beautiful. I experienced this myself, when I drove across France with a friend and his Citroen 2 CV in the 1990s via Saarbrücken, Metz in Alsace and Troyes to the Loire River and along there via Orléans, Blois, Tours, Angers , Nantes to the Atlantic Ocean to the Ile de Noirmoutier and from there across France via Poitier and Limoges to Clermond-Ferrand in the Auvergne to the Michelin tire-test-center, where at that time took place an I.C.C.R. (International Citroen Car Club Rallye), where Citroen fans from all over Europe came to with their old and new Citroens. From there the way back went via Moulins, Chalon-sur-Saone, Besancon, Mühlhausen in Alsace back to Germany. We always drove Route National and small roads and saw a lot of France, including the famous Loire castles. We always slept in tents at campsites and shopped in Supermarches. And the Citroen 2 CV ran without any problems. The trip was great. The I.C.C.R. incidentally takes place every two years in different european countries. The next one is scheduled to be in Torun/Poland this year in August. Over many decades, I have attended many Citroen meetings in Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands and got to know many people and met many friends! Drivers of old Citroens are like a big family, no matter which country you are. I wish you all the best for your trip with the Daihatsu Charade, nice weather and of course flat-free km! Maybe you can post a video from this trip with some highlights of the trip?! Best regards from Germany.
